CHAPTER I

Wuthering Heights is the name of Mr. Heathcliff’s dwelling 住.  ‘Wuthering’ being 存在 a significant 重大 provincial 省级 adjective 形容词, descriptive 描述的 of the atmospheric 大气的 tumult to which its station 站 is exposed 暴露 in stormy 暴风雨 weather 天气.  Pure 纯的, bracing 支撑 ventilation 通风 they must have up there at all times, indeed 的确: one may guess 推测 the power of the north 北方 wind 风 blowing 吹；殴打 over the edge 边, by the excessive 过度的 slant 倾斜 of a few stunted 特技 firs 冷杉 at the end of the house; and by a range 范围；射程；类别 of gaunt thorns 刺 all stretching 伸展 their limbs 肢 one way, as if craving 渴望 alms of the sun 太阳.  Happily, the architect 建筑师 had fore‧sight 前面‧视力 to build it strong 强的: the narrow 狭窄的 windows 窗 are deeply 深深地；极其，非常 set in the wall 墙, and the corners 角落 defended 辩护 with large jutting 突出部分 stones 石头.

The apartment 公寓套房 and furniture 家具 would have been nothing extra‧ordinary 非凡的 as belonging 属于 to a homely, northern 北方的 farmer 农场主, with a stubborn 倔强 countenance 面容, and stalwart limbs 肢 set out to advantage 有利条件 in knee 膝-breeches and gaiters.  Such an individual 单个 seated 席位 in his arm 手臂-chair 椅子, his mug 杯 of ale 麦酒 fro‧thing 来来往往‧东西；事件 on the round 圆形的；围绕 table 桌；表 before him, is to be seen see in any circuit 电路 of five or six 6 miles 英里 among 之间 these hills 小山, if you go at the right time after dinner 正餐.  But Mr. Heathcliff forms a singular 单数 contrast 对比 to his abode and style 样式 of living.  He is a dark 黑暗的-skinned 皮 gipsy in aspect 方面, in dress 衣服 and manners 方式 a gentle‧man 先生: that is, as much a gentleman as many a country squire: rather slovenly, perhaps 或许, yet not looking amiss with his negligence 疏忽, because he has an erect 直立 and hand‧some 英俊 figure; and rather morose.  Possibly, some people might suspect 怀疑；嫌疑犯 him of a degree 度 of under-bred 养育；繁殖:breed pride 自尊; I have a sympathetic 同情的 chord 弦 within 在内 that tells me it is nothing of the sort 分类: I know, by instinct 直觉, his reserve 预订；保留 springs 春季 from an aversion 厌恶 to showy displays 显示 of feeling—to manifestations 表现 of mutual 相互 kindliness.  He’ll love 爱 and hate 仇恨 equally 平等地…；相同地… under cover 覆盖, and esteem 尊重 it a species 种类 of impertinence to be loved 爱 or hated 仇恨 again.  No, I’m running on too fast 快的: I bestow 赐给 my own attributes 特性；特质；属性 over-liberally 自由主义的 on him.  Mr. Heathcliff may have entirely 完全；彻底；完整地 dissimilar reasons 理由 for keeping his hand out of the way when he meets a would-be acquaintance 熟人, to those which actuate me.  Let me hope 希望 my constitution 宪法 is almost peculiar 奇怪的: my dear 亲爱的 mother 母亲 used to say I should never have a comfort‧able 舒服；自在 home; and only last summer 夏 I proved 证明 myself 我 perfectly 完美地，完满地 unworthy of one.

While enjoying 享有 a month 月 of fine 好的 weather 天气 at the sea 海-coast 海岸, I was thrown 投掷:throw into the company of a most many fascinating 深深吸引；迷住 creature 动物；生物: a real goddess 女神 in my eyes, as long as she took no notice 注意 of me.  I ‘never told tell my love 爱’ vocally 声音的; still, if looks have language 语言, the merest 仅仅 idiot 白痴 might have guessed 推测 I was over head and ears 耳朵: she understood 懂:understand me at last, and looked a return 回转—the sweetest 甜的 of all imaginable looks.  And what did I do?  I confess 供认 it with shame 羞愧—shrunk icily 冷冰冰 into myself 我, like a snail 蜗牛; at every glance 一瞥 retired 退休 colder 寒冷的 and farther far; till 到 finally 最后 the poor 贫穷的 innocent 无辜 was led lead to doubt 怀疑 her own senses, and, overwhelmed 压倒 with confusion 混乱 at her supposed 假定 mistake 错误, persuaded 说服 her mamma to decamp.  By this curious 好奇的 turn of disposition 性格 I have gained 获得 the reputation 名气 of deliberate 商榷 heartlessness; how undeserved, I alone 单独的 can appreciate 欣赏.

I took a seat 席位 at the end of the hearth‧stone 炉‧石头 opposite 相对的 that towards which my land‧lord 房东 advanced 往前推, and filled 装满 up an interval 间隔 of silence 沉默 by attempting 试图 to caress 抚摸 the canine 犬 mother 母亲, who had left 左边；留下；离开 her nursery 婴儿室；苗圃, and was sneaking 潜行 wolfishly to the back of my legs 腿, her lip 嘴唇 curled 一绺鬈发 up, and her white 白色的 teeth watering for a snatch 抢夺.  My caress 抚摸 provoked 惹 a long, guttural gnarl.

Joseph mumbled 咕哝 indistinctly in the depths 深度 of the cellar 地窖, but gave give no intimation of ascending 登; so his master 主人；硕士 dived 潜水 down to him, leaving me vis-à-vis the ruffianly bitch 婊子 and a pair 一副 of grim 严峻 shaggy sheep 羊- dogs 狗, who shared 股 with her a jealous 妒忌的 guardian‧ship 监护人‧船 over all my movements 运动.  Not anxious 焦急的 to come in contact 联系 with their fangs, I sat 坐:sit still; but, imagining 想象 they would scarcely 缺乏的 under‧stand 懂 tacit 默 insults 侮辱, I unfortunately 不幸 indulged 放纵 in winking 眨眼 and making faces at the trio 三人, and some turn of my physiognomy so irritated 刺激 madam 夫人, that she suddenly 突然；猛地，骤然 broke 破；断:break into a fury 愤怒 and leapt on my knees 膝.  I flung her back, and hastened 加速 to inter‧pose 间‧以…身份出现，造成 the table 桌；表 between us.  This proceeding 继续 aroused 引起 the whole 全部的 hive 蜂巢: half 一半的-a-dozen （一）打；十二 four-footed 脚；英尺 fiends, of various 各种 sizes 大小 and ages 年龄, issued from hidden 隐藏的 dens 巢穴 to the common 普通的 centre.  I felt feel my heels 脚跟 and coat 上衣-laps 膝部 peculiar 奇怪的 subjects 主题 of assault 突击; and parrying off the larger combatants 战斗 as effectually as I could with the poker 捅火钩；扑克, I was con‧strain 压抑 to demand 要求, aloud 高声, assistance 帮助 from some of the house‧hold 家庭 in re-establishing 建立 peace 和平.

Mr. Heathcliff and his man climbed 攀登 the cellar 地窖 steps 步；走 with vexatious phlegm: I don’t think they moved one second faster 快的 than usual, though the hearth 炉 was an absolute 绝对的 tempest 温度 of worrying 烦恼 and yelping.  Happily, an inhabitant 居民 of the kitchen 厨房 made more many despatch: a lusty dame, with tucked 掖-up gown 袍, bare 光秃秃的 arms 手臂, and fire 火-flushed 红晕 cheeks 脸颊, rushed 仓促 into the midst 中间 of us flourishing 繁荣 a frying 油炸；炒-pan 平底锅: and used that weapon 武器, and her tongue 舌头, to such purpose 目的, that the storm 暴风雨 sub‧side 塌陷 magically 神奇, and she only remained 留；剩余, heaving 举起 like a sea 海 after a high wind 风, when her master 主人；硕士 entered 进入 on the scene 场面.

‘What the devil 魔鬼 is the matter?’ he asked, eyeing me in a manner 方式 that I could ill 生病 endure 忍受, after this inhospitable treatment 治疗.

‘What the devil, indeed 的确!’ I muttered 咕哝.  ‘The herd 放牧 of possessed 拥有 swine could have had no worse 更坏的 spirits 精神 in them than those animals 动物 of yours, sir 先生.  You might as well leave a stranger 奇怪；陌生 with a brood 窝 of tigers 虎!’

‘They won 赢:win’t meddle with persons who touch 触摸 nothing,’ he remarked 注意；评论, putting the bottle 瓶子 before me, and restoring 修复；使复位；使复职 the displaced 顶替 table 桌；表.  ‘The dogs 狗 do right to be vigilant.  Take a glass 玻璃 of wine 葡萄酒?’

‘No, thank 谢谢 you.’

‘Not bitten 咬, are you?’

‘If I had been, I would have set my signet on the biter 咬.’  Heathcliff’s countenance 面容 relaxed 放松 into a grin 微笑.

‘Come, come,’ he said, ‘you are flurried 慌张, Mr. Lockwood.  Here, take a little wine.  Guests are so exceedingly 非常 rare 罕见的 in this house that I and my dogs 狗, I am willing to own, hardly 几乎不 know how to receive 收到 them.  Your health 健康状况, sir 先生?’

CHAPTER II

‘Why?  Cannot you tell her whom 谁 I am, eh, Joseph?’

‘ Nor 也不-ne me!  I’ll hae no hend 母鸡 wi’t,’ muttered 咕哝 the head, vanishing 消失.

‘No,’ I said, half 一半的 smiling 微笑.  ‘You are the proper 适当的 person to ask me.’

She flung the tea 茶水 back, spoon 匙 and all, and resumed 恢复 herchair 椅子 in a pet 宠物; her fore‧head 前额 corrugated, and her red 红色的 under- lip 嘴唇 pushed 推 out, like a child’s ready 准备好的 to cry 哭，叫喊.

‘You see, sir 先生, I am come, according 协议 to promise 允诺!’ I exclaimed 喊叫, assuming 承担 the cheerful 快乐; ‘and I fear 害怕 I shall 将要 be weather 天气-bound 必定；跳 for half 一半的 an hour 小时, if you can afford 买得起 me shelter 居所 during that space 空间.’

‘No, I could not.’

‘Umph!’

‘Are you going to mak’ the tea 茶水?’ demanded 要求 he of the shabby 破旧 coat 上衣, shifting 转移 his ferocious 凶猛 gaze 凝视 from me to the young lady 女士.

‘Is he to have any?’ she asked, appealing 上诉 to Heathcliff.

‘Get it ready 准备好的, will you?’ was the answer 答复, uttered 说出 so savagely 野蛮人 that I started.  The tone 音 in which the words were said revealed 揭示 a genuine 真正 bad 坏的 nature.  I no longer felt feel inclined 倾斜 to call Heathcliff a capital 首都 fellow 同伴.  When the preparations 制备 were finished 完成, he invited 邀请 me with—‘Now, sir 先生, bring forward 前进地 yourchair 椅子.’  And we all, including 包括 the rustic 乡村 youth 年轻, drew 绘画:draw round 圆形的；围绕 the table 桌；表: an austere silence 沉默 prevailing 战胜 while we discussed 讨论 our meal 餐.

I thought think, if I had caused 原因；引起 the cloud 云, it was my duty 职责 to make an effort 努力 to dispel 打消 it.  They could not every day sit 坐 so grim 严峻 and taciturn; and it was impossible 不可能的, however ill 生病-tempered 性情 they might be, that the universal 普遍的 scowl they wore 穿着:wear was their every-day countenance 面容.

‘It is strange 奇怪；陌生,’ I began begin, in the interval 间隔 of swallowing 吞 one cup 杯子 of tea 茶水 and receiving 收到 another—‘it is strange how custom 习惯 can mould our tastes 品尝 and ideas 主意: many could not imagine 想象 the existence 存在 of happiness 幸福 in a life of such complete exile 流亡 from the world as you spend 用钱；消磨时间, Mr. Heathcliff; yet, I’ll venture 企业；投机活动；商业冒险 to say, that, surrounded 包围 by your family, and with your amiable 可亲 lady 女士 as the pre‧side 主持 genius 天才 over your home and heart 心—’

‘Mrs. Heathcliff, your wife 妻子, I mean.’

‘Well, yes— oh, you would intimate 亲密 that her spirit 精神 has taken the post 邮件 of ministering 大臣 angel 天使, and guards 警卫 the for‧tune 命运 of Wuthering Heights, even when her body 身体 is gone.  Is that it?’

This was worse 更坏的 than before: the youth 年轻 grew 生长；种植:grow crimson, and clenched 咬紧 his fist 拳头, with every appearance 外貌 of a meditated assault 突击.  But he seemed to recollect him‧self 他自己 presently, and smothered 扼杀 the storm 暴风雨 in a brutal 野蛮 curse 诅咒, muttered 咕哝 on my behalf 代表: which, however, I took care 关心 not to notice 注意.

‘Unhappy in your conjectures 推测, sir 先生,’ observed 观察 my host 主人; ‘we neither 都不 of us have the privilege 特权 of owning your good fairy 仙女; her mate 伴，友 is dead 死去的.  I said she was my daughter 女儿-in-law: therefore 因此, she must have married 结婚 my son 儿子.’

‘And this young man is—’

‘Not my son, assuredly.’

Heathcliff smiled 微笑 again, as if it were rather too bold 胆大的；醒目的 a jest to attribute 特性；特质；属性 the paternity of that bear 生；熊 to him.

‘My name is Hareton Earnshaw,’ growled 吠声 the other; ‘and I’d counsel 法律顾问 you to respect 尊重 it!’

‘I’ve shown show no disrespect 失礼,’ was my reply 回答, laughing 笑 internally 国内 at the dignity 尊严 with which he announced 宣布 him‧self 他自己.

He fixed 固定 his eye on me longer than I cared 关心 to return 回转 the stare 盯着看，凝视，注视, for fear 害怕 I might be tempted 引诱 either 任一个 to box 盒；耳光 his ears 耳朵 or render 给予 my hilarity audible 听得见.  I began begin to feel unmistakably 明白的 out of place in that pleasant 可爱的 family circle 圆.  The dismal 惨淡 spiritual 精神 atmosphere 大气层 overcame, and more many than neutralised, the glowing 辉光 physical 物理 comforts 安慰 round 圆形的；围绕 me; and I resolved 解决 to be cautious 小心的 how I ventured 企业；投机活动；商业冒险 under those rafters a third time.

‘I don’t think it possible for me to get home now without a guide 引路,’ I could not help exclaiming 喊叫.  ‘The roads 路 will be buried 埋葬 already 早已；已经; and, if they were bare 光秃秃的, I could scarcely 缺乏的 distinguish 区分 a foot 脚；英尺 in advance 往前推.’

‘Hareton, drive 驾驶 thosedozen （一）打；十二 sheep 羊 into the barn 谷仓 porch 门廊.  They’ll be covered 覆盖 if left 左边；留下；离开 in the fold 折叠 all night: and put a plank 板 before them,’ said Heathcliff.

‘How must I do?’ I continued, with rising 上升 irritation 刺激.

There was no reply 回答 to my question; and on looking round 圆形的；围绕 I saw see only Joseph bringing in a pail of porridge for the dogs 狗, and Mrs. Heathcliff leaning 靠 over the fire 火, diverting 转移 her‧self 她自己 with burning 烧 a bundle 捆 of matches 比赛；火柴 which had fallen 落下:fall from the chimney 烟囱-piece 块 as she restored 修复；使复位；使复职 the tea 茶水-canister to its place.  The former 以前的, when he had deposited 留下 his burden 负荷，重负, took a critical 危急 survey 调查 of the room, and in cracked 破裂 tones 音 grated 炉排 out—‘Aw wonder 琢磨；奇妙 how yah can faishion to stand thear i’ idleness un war, when all on ’ems goan out!  Bud yah’re a nowt, and it’s no use talking 说话—yah’ll niver mend 修理 o’yer ill 生病 ways, but goa raight to t’ divil, like yer mother 母亲 afore ye!’

I imagined 想象, for a moment 瞬间, that thispiece 块 of eloquence was addressed 地址 to me; and, sufficiently 充分地 enraged, stepped 步；走 towards the aged 年龄 rascal with an intention 意图 of kicking 踢 him out of the door 门.  Mrs. Heathcliff, however, checked 检查 me by her answer 答复.

‘You scandalous old hypocrite!’ she replied 回答.  ‘Are you not afraid 害怕的 of being 存在 carried 运送；支撑 away bodily 身体, when‧ever 随时 you mention 提到 the devil 魔鬼’s name?  I warn 警告 you to ref‧rain 副歌 from provoking 惹 me, or I’ll ask your abduction as a special 特殊的 favour!  Stop 停止! look here, Joseph,’ she continued, taking a long, dark 黑暗的 book 书 from a shelf 架子; ‘I’ll show you how far I’ve progressed 进步 in the Black 黑色 Art: I shall 将要 soon 立刻 be competent 胜任 to make a clear house of it.  The red 红色的 cow 奶牛 didn’t die 死亡 by chance 机会; and your rheumatism can hardly 几乎不 be reckoned 估计 among 之间 providential visitations!’

‘Oh, wicked 邪恶的, wicked!’ gasped 喘气 the elder 年长的; ‘may the Lord 主 deliver 发表 us from evil 邪恶的!’

‘No, reprobate! you are a cast‧away 演员‧离开—be off, or I’ll hurt 损害 you seriously 严肃地!  I’ll have you all modelled 模型 in wax 蜡 and clay 黏土! and the first who passes 走过 the limits 限制 I fix 固定 shall 将要—I’ll not say what he shall 6 be done to—but, you’ll see!  Go, I’m looking at you!’

The little witch 巫婆 put a mock 嘲笑 malignity into her beautiful 美丽 eyes, and Joseph, trembling 发抖 with sincere 真诚的 horror 恐怖, hurried 赶紧 out, praying 祈祷, and ejaculating ‘ wicked 邪恶的’ as he went.  I thought think her conduct 进行 must be prompted 敏捷的 by a species 种类 of dreary 凄凉 fun 乐趣; and, now that we were alone 单独的, I endeavoured to interest her in my distress 苦难.

‘Mrs. Heathcliff,’ I said ear‧nest 热心的, ‘you must excuse 原谅 me for troubling 麻烦 you.  I presume 假设, because, with that face, I’m sure 确信的 you cannot help being 存在 good-hearted 心.  Do point out some land‧mark 里程碑 by which I may know my way home: I have no more many idea 主意 how to get there than you would have how to get to London!’

‘Take the road 路 you came,’ she answered 答复, ensconcing her‧self 她自己 in achair 椅子, with a candle 蜡烛, and the long book 书 open before her.  ‘It is brief 简要 advice 劝告, but as sound 声音 as I can give.’

‘Then, if you hear of me being 8 discovered 发现 dead 死去的 in a bog 沼泽 or a pit 坑 full 满的 of snow 雪；下雪, your conscience 良心 won 赢:win’t whisper 低声说 that it is partly your fault 缺点?’

‘How so?  I cannot escort 护送 you.  They wouldn’t let me go to the end of the garden 菜园；花园 wall 墙.’

‘You!  I should be sorry 对不起的 to ask you to cross 穿过；十字 the threshold 阈, for my convenience 方便, on such a night,’ I cried 哭，叫喊.  ‘I want you to tell me my way, not to show it: or else 其他 to persuade 说服 Mr. Heathcliff to give me a guide 引路.’

‘Who?  There is him‧self 他自己, Earnshaw, Zillah, Joseph and I.  Which would you have?’

‘Are there no boys at the farm 农场?’

‘No; those are all.’

‘Then, it follows that I am compelled 迫使 to stay 停留.’

‘That you may settle 解决；定居 with your host 主人.  I have nothing to do with it.’

‘I hope 希望 it will be a lesson 教训 to you to make no more many rash 皮疹 journeys 旅行 on these hills 小山,’ cried 哭，叫喊 Heathcliff’s stern 严肃 voice 嗓音 from the kitchen 厨房 entrance 入口.  ‘As to staying 停留 here, I don’t keep accommodations 住所 for visitors 访问者: you must share 股 a bed 床 with Hareton or Joseph, if you do.’

‘I can sleep 睡 on achair 椅子 in this room,’ I replied 回答.

‘No, no!  A stranger 奇怪；陌生 is a stranger, be he rich 富有的 or poor 贫穷的: it will not suit 一套外衣 me to permit 许可 any one the range 范围；射程；类别 of the place while I am off guard 警卫!’ said the unmannerly wretch 不幸的人.

With this insult 侮辱 my patience 耐心 was at an end.  I uttered 说出 an expression 表现 of disgust 反感, and pushed 推 past 过去的 him into the yard 院子, running against Earnshaw in my haste 匆忙.  It was so dark 黑暗的 that I could not see the means of exit 出口; and, as I wandered 漫步 round 圆形的；围绕, I heard hear another specimen 标本 of their civil 国内 behaviour amongst 之中 each other.  At first the young man appeared 出现 about to befriend me.

‘I’ll go with him as far as the park 公园,’ he said.

‘You’ll go with him to hell 地狱!’ exclaimed 喊叫 his master 主人；硕士, or what‧ever 无论什么 relation 关系 he bore 厌倦；厌烦；生.  ‘And who is to look after the horses 马, eh?’

‘A man’s life is of more many consequence 后果 than one evening 傍晚’s neglect 疏忽 of the horses: some‧body 某人 must go,’ murmured 私语 Mrs. Heathcliff, more many kindly than I expected.

‘Not at your command 命令!’ retorted 反驳 Hareton.  ‘If you set store 商店 on him, you’d better well be quiet 清静的.’

‘Then I hope 希望 his ghost 鬼 will haunt 出没 you; and I hope Mr. Heathcliff will never get another tenant 承租人 till 到 the Grange is a ruin 破坏,’ she answered 答复, sharply 敏锐的.

‘Hearken, hearken, shoo’s cursing 诅咒 on ’em!’ muttered 咕哝 Joseph, towards whom 谁 I had been steering 驾驶.

He sat 坐:sit within 在内 ear‧shot 耳朵‧射击, milking 奶 the cows 奶牛 by the light of a lantern 灯笼, which I seized 抓住 unceremoniously, and, calling out that I would send 派遣；送 it back on the morrow, rushed 仓促 to the nearest postern.

‘Maister, maister, he’s staling 陈旧 t’ lanthern!’ shouted 呼喊 the ancient 古代的, pursuing 追求 my retreat 撤退.  ‘Hey, Gnasher!  Hey, dog 狗!  Hey Wolf, holld him, holld him!’

On opening the little door 6, two hairy 毛茸茸 monsters 怪物 flew 飞；苍蝇:fly at my throat 咽喉, bearing 生；熊 me down, and extinguishing 扑灭 the light; while a mingled 交融 guffaw from Heathcliff and Hareton put the cope‧stone 对付，应付，处理‧石头 on my rage 愤怒 and humiliation 屈辱.  Fortunately, the beasts 野兽 seemed more many bent 弯曲:bend on stretching 伸展 their paws 爪子, and yawning 打哈欠, and flourishing 繁荣 their tails 尾, than devouring 吞食 me alive 活的；有生命的; but they would suffer 受痛苦 no resurrection 复活, and I was forced to lie 躺；说谎 till 到 their malignant 恶性 masters 主人；硕士 pleased 请;讨人喜欢 to deliver 发表 me: then, hat‧less 帽子‧少 and trembling 发抖 with wrath 愤怒, I ordered the miscreants to let me out—on their peril 岌 to keep me one minute 分 longer—with several incoherent threats 威胁 of retaliation 报复 that, in their indefinite 不定 depth 深度 of virulency, smacked 拍击 of King 国王 Lear.

The vehemence of my agitation 搅动 brought bring on a copious bleeding 使出血 at the nose 鼻子, and still Heathcliff laughed 笑, and still I scolded 责骂.  I don’t know what would have concluded 得出结论 the scene 场面, had there not been one person at hand rather more many rational 合理的 than myself 我, and more many benevolent than my entertainer 热情款待.  This was Zillah, the stout 肥硕 house‧wife 家庭主妇; who at length 长度 issued forth 向前 to inquire 打听 into the nature of the uproar.  She thought think that some of them had been laying 放置 violent 猛烈 hands on me; and, not daring 敢 to attack 攻击 her master 主人；硕士, she turned her vocal 声音的 artillery 炮兵 against the younger scoundrel.

‘Well, Mr. Earnshaw,’ she cried 哭，叫喊, ‘I wonder 琢磨；奇妙 what you’ll have agait next?  Are we going to murder 谋杀 folk 民间 on our very door 7- stones 石头?  I see this house will never do for me—look at t’ poor 贫穷的 lad 小伙子, he’s fair 公平；美丽 choking 呛!  Wisht, wisht; you mun’n’t go on so.  Come in, and I’ll cure 治愈 that: there now, hold ye still.’

With these words she suddenly 突然；猛地，骤然 splashed 溅 a pint 品脱；小半升 of icy 冷冰冰 water down my neck 颈, and pulled 拉 me into the kitchen 厨房.  Mr. Heathcliff followed, his accidental 偶然 merriment expiring 到期 quickly 迅速地 in his habitual 惯常的 moroseness.

I was sick 病；恶心 exceedingly 非常, and dizzy 头晕, and faint 微弱的; and thus 于是 compelled 迫使 per‧force 每个；依照‧力 to accept 承认 lodgings 存放 under his roof 屋顶.  He told tell Zillah to give me a glass 玻璃 of brandy 白兰地, and then passed 走过 on to the inner 里面的 room; while she condoled with me on my sorry 对不起的 predicament 困境, and having obeyed 服从 his orders, whereby 因此 I was some‧what 有些 revived 复活, ushered 招待员 me to bed 床.

CHAPTER III

While leading the way upstairs 楼上, she recommended 推荐 that I should hide 隐藏 the candle 蜡烛, and not make a noise 噪音; for her master 主人；硕士 had an odd 奇 notion 概念 about the chamber 室 she would put me in, and never let any‧body 任何人 lodge 存放 there willingly 甘心.  I asked the reason 理由.  She did not know, she answered 答复: she had only lived there a year or two; and they had so many queer 奇怪 goings on, she could not begin to be curious 好奇的.

The ledge 窗台, where I placed my candle 蜡烛, had a few mildewed books 书 piled 堆 up in one corner 角落; and it was covered 覆盖 with writing scratched 刮 on the paint 描绘；颜料.  This writing, however, was nothing but a name repeated 重复 in all kinds of characters 性格, large and small—Catherine Earnshaw, here and there varied 变化 to Catherine Heathcliff, and then again to Catherine Linton.

In vapid listlessness I leant 靠:lean my head against the window 窗, and continued spelling 拼写 over Catherine Earnshaw—Heathcliff—Linton, till 到 my eyes closed; but they had not rested 休息，其余 five minutes 分 when a glare 强光 of white 白色的 letters 信 started from the dark 黑暗的, as vivid 生动 as spectres—the air 天空 swarmed 一群 with Catherines; and rousing 唤醒 myself 我 to dispel 打消 the obtrusive name, I discovered 发现 my candle 蜡烛-wick reclining on one of the antique 古董 volumes 卷, and per‧fume 香水 the place with an odour of roasted 烤 calf 小牛-skin 皮.  I snuffed it off, and, very ill 生病 at ease 轻松 under the influence 影响 of cold 寒冷的 and lingering 萦绕 nausea 恶心, sat 坐:sit up and spread 伸开 open the injured 损伤 tome on my knee 膝.  It was a Testament, in lean 靠 type 类型, and smelling 气味；嗅觉 dreadfully 可怕 musty: a fly 飞；苍蝇- leaf 叶子 bore 厌倦；厌烦；生 the inscription 题词—‘Catherine Earnshaw, her book 书,’ and a date 日期 some quarter 四分之一 of a century 世纪 back.  I shut 关闭 it, and took up another and another, till 到 I had examined 检查 all.  Catherine’s library 图书馆 was select 选择, and its state of dilapidation proved 证明 it to have been well used, though not altogether 全部地 for a legitimate 合法 purpose 目的: scarcely 缺乏的 one chapter 章节 had escaped 逃脱, a pen 笔-and-ink 墨水 commentary 评论—at least 最小的 the appearance 外貌 of one— covering 覆盖 every morsel of blank 空白 that the printer 印刷 had left 左边；留下；离开.  Some were detached 分离 sentences 句子; other parts took the form of a regular 有规律的 diary 日记, scrawled in an unformed, childish 幼稚 hand.  At thetop 顶 of an extra 额外的 page 页 ( quite 相当 a treasure 金银财宝, probably 很可能；大概, when first lighted light on) I was greatly amused 使人发笑 to behold 不料 an excellent 卓越的 caricature 漫画 of my friend 朋友 Joseph,— rudely 粗鲁的, yet powerfully 有力 sketched 草图.  An immediate 立即的 interest kindled within 在内 me for the unknown 未知 Catherine, and I began begin forth‧with 向前‧和 to decipher 解码 her faded 褪去 hieroglyphics.

‘An awful 糟糕的 Sunday,’ commenced 开始 the paragraph 段 beneath 之下.  ‘I wish 希望 my father 父亲 were back again.  Hindley is a detestable substitute 替代—his conduct 进行 to Heathcliff is atrocious—H. and I are going to rebel 反叛—we took our initiatory step 步；走 this evening 傍晚.

‘All day had been flooding 洪水 with rain 雨; we could not go to church, so Joseph must needs get up a congregation 集合 in the garret; and, while Hindley and his wife 妻子 basked downstairs 楼下 before a comfort‧able 舒服；自在 fire 火—doing any‧thing 任何东西 but reading their Bibles, I’ll answer 答复 for it—Heathcliff, myself 我, and the unhappy 不快乐 ploughboy were commanded 命令 to take our prayer 祈祷- books 书, and mount 增加: we were ranged 范围；射程；类别 in a row 行, on a sack 解雇 of corn 玉米, groaning 呻吟 and shivering 发抖, and hoping 希望 that Joseph would shiver 发抖 too, so that he might give us a short 短的 homily for his own sake 缘故.  A vain 徒劳的 idea 主意!  The service lasted precisely 精确地 three hours 小时; and yet my brother 兄弟 had the face to exclaim 喊叫, when he saw see us descending 下来, “What, done already 早已；已经?”  On Sunday evenings 傍晚 we used to be permitted 许可 to play, if we did not make much noise 噪音; now a mere 仅仅 titter is sufficient 足够 to send 派遣；送 us into corners 角落.

‘“You forget 忘记 you have a master 主人；硕士 here,” says the tyrant.  “I’ll demolish 拆除 the first who puts me out of temper 性情!  I insist 咬定 on perfect 使完善；完美的 sobriety and silence 沉默.  Oh, boy! was that you?  Frances darling 宠儿, pull 拉 his hair 头发 as you go by: I heard hear him snap 卡 his fingers 手指.”  Frances pulled 拉 his hair heartily 爽朗, and then went and seated 席位 her‧self 她自己 on her husband 丈夫’s knee 膝, and there they were, like two babies 婴儿, kissing 接吻 and talking 说话 non‧sense 废话 by the hour 小时—foolish 傻 palaver that we should be ashamed 惭愧的 of.  We made ourselves 我们自己 as snug as our means allowed 允许 in the arch 弓形 of the dresser 衣服.  I had just fastened 系牢 our pinafores together 同时, and hung 悬挂:hang them up for a curtain 窗帘, when in comes Joseph, on an errand 使命 from the stables 稳定.  He tears 撕裂；泪 down my handiwork, boxes 盒；耳光 my ears 耳朵, and croaks:

‘“T’ maister nobbut just buried 埋葬, and Sabbath not o’ered, und t’ sound 声音 o’ t’ gospel 福音 still i’ yer lugs, and ye darr be laiking!  Shame 羞愧 on ye! sit 坐 ye down, ill 生病 childer! there’s good books 书 eneugh if ye’ll read ’em: sit ye down, and think o’ yer sowls!”

‘Saying this, he compelled 迫使 us so to square 正方形；广场 our positions 位置 that we might receive 收到 from the far-off fire 火 a dull 钝的；没兴趣 ray 光束 to show us the text 文本 of the lumber 木料 he thrust 推力 upon us.  I could not bear 生；熊 the employment 雇用.  I took my dingy volume 卷 by the scroop, and hurled 投 it into the dog 狗-kennel, vowing 发誓 I hated 仇恨 a good book 书.  Heathcliff kicked 踢 his to the same place.  Then there was a hubbub!

‘“Maister Hindley!” shouted 呼喊 our chaplain 牧师.  “Maister, coom hither!  Miss 错过；想念 Cathy’s riven th’ back off ‘Th’ Helmet o’ Salvation,’ un’ Heathcliff’s pawsed his fit 合适 into t’ first part o’ ‘T’ Brooad Way to Destruction 破坏!’  It’s fair 公平；美丽 flaysome that ye let ’em go on this gait.  Ech! th’ owd man wad ha’ laced 花边 ’em properly 正确地—but he’s goan!”

‘Hindley hurried 赶紧 up from his paradise 天堂 on the hearth 炉, and seizing 抓住 one of us by the collar 衣领, and the other by the arm 手臂, hurled 投 both into the back- kitchen 厨房; where, Joseph asseverated, “owd Nick” would fetch 取 us as sure 确信的 as we were living: and, so comforted 安慰, we each sought a separate 分开 nook to await 等待 his advent 来临.  I reached 到达 this book 书, and a pot 罐 ofink 墨水 from a shelf 架子, and pushed 推 the house-door 9 ajar to give me light, and I have got get the time on with writing for twenty 二十 minutes 分; but my companion 同伴 is impatient 不耐烦, and proposes 提议 that we should appropriate 适当 the dairy‧woman 乳制品‧女人’s cloak 披风, and have a scam‧per 诈骗‧每个；依照 on the moors 泊, under its shelter 居所.  A pleasant 可爱的 suggestion 建议—and then, if the surly old man come in, he may believe 信任 his prophecy 预言 verified 校验—we cannot be damper 微湿的, or colder 寒冷的, in the rain 雨 than we are here.’

I suppose 假定 Catherine fulfilled 履行 her project 项目, for the next sentence 句子 took up another subject 主题: she waxed 蜡 lachrymose.

‘How little did I dream 梦想 that Hindley would ever 永远；曾经 make me cry 哭，叫喊 so!’ she wrote write.  ‘My head aches 疼痛, till 8 I cannot keep it on the pillow 枕头; and still I can’t give over.  Poor 贫穷的 Heathcliff!  Hindley calls him a vagabond, and won 赢:win’t let him sit 坐 with us, nor 也不 eat 吃 with us any more many; and, he says, he and I must not play together 同时, and threatens 威胁:threat to turn him out of the house if we break 破；断 his orders.  He has been blaming 指责 our father 父亲 (how dared 敢 he?) for treating 治疗；款待 H. too liberally 自由主义的; and swears 发誓 he will reduce 减少 him to his right place—’

I began begin to nod drowsily over the dim 暗淡 page 页: my eye wandered 漫步 from manuscript 手稿 to print 印刷.  I saw see a red 红色的 ornamented 装饰 title 标题—‘Seventy Times Seven 七, and the First of the Seventy-First. A Pious Discourse delivered 发表 by the Reverend Jabez Branderham, in the Chapel of Gimmerden Sough.’  And while I was, half 一半的-consciously 有意识的, worrying 烦恼 my brain 脑 to guess 推测 what Jabez Branderham would make of his subject 主题, I sank 淹没:sink back in bed 床, and fell 落下:fall asleep 睡着的.  Alas, for the effects 影响 of bad 坏的 tea 6 and bad temper 性情!  What else 其他 could it be that made me pass 走过 such a terrible 可怕的 night?  I don’t remember 记得 another that I can at all compare 比较 with it since I was cap‧able 能 of suffering 受痛苦.

I began begin to dream 梦想, almost before I ceased 停止 to be sensible 明智 of my locality 局部性.  I thought think it was morning 早晨; and I had set out on my way home, with Joseph for a guide 引路.  The snow 雪；下雪 lay 放置 yards 院子 deep 深的 in our road 路; and, as we floundered 比目鱼 on, my companion 同伴 wearied 厌倦 me with constant 不变 reproaches 责备 that I had not brought bring a pilgrim 朝圣’s staff 全体职员;参谋: telling me that I could never get into the house without one, and boast‧fully 自夸‧完全地 flourishing 繁荣 a heavy 厚实；重的-headed cudgel, which I understood 懂:understand to be so denominated.  For a moment 瞬间 I considered it absurd 荒诞 that I should need such a weapon 武器 to gain 获得 admittance into my own residence 住宅.  Then a new idea 主意 flashed 使闪光 across 穿过 me.  I was not going there: we were journeying 旅行 to hear the famous 著名 Jabez Branderham preach 说教, from the text 文本—‘Seventy Times Seven 七;’ and either 任一个 Joseph, the preacher 说教, or I had committed 承诺 the ‘First of the Seventy-First,’ and were to be publicly exposed 暴露 and excommunicated.

We came to the chapel 教堂.  I have passed 走过 it really in my walks 走；步行同道, twice 两次 or thrice; it lies 躺；说谎 in a hollow 空的, between two hills 小山: an elevated 提升 hollow, near a swamp 沼泽, whose 谁的 peaty moisture 湿气 is said to answer 答复 all the purposes 目的 of embalming on the few corpses 尸体 deposited 留下 there.  The roof 屋顶 has been kept keep whole 全部的 hitherto 迄今; but as the clergy‧man 牧师’s stipend is only twenty 二十 pounds 敲打；英镑 per annum 每年, and a house with two rooms, threatening 威胁:threat speedily 迅速 to determine 决心 into one, no clergy‧man 牧师 will under‧take 承担 the duties 职责 of pastor 牧师: especially 尤其地 as it is currently 目前 reported that his flock 群 would rather let him starve 饿死 than increase the living by one penny 便士 from their own pockets 口袋.  However, in my dream 梦想, Jabez had a full 满的 and attentive 注意的 congregation 集合; and he preached 说教—good God! what a sermon 讲道; divided 分 into four hundred 百 and ninety 九十 parts, each fully 充分 equal 相等的 to an ordinary 普通的 address 地址 from the pulpit 讲坛, and each discussing 讨论 a separate 分开 sin 罪!  Where he searched 搜寻 for them, I cannot tell.  He had his private 私有的 manner 方式 of interpreting 翻译，弄清含义 the phrase 短语, and it seemed necessary 必要的 the brother 兄弟 should sin 罪 different 不同的 sins 罪 on every occasion 机会.  They were of the most many curious 好奇的 character 性格: odd 奇 transgressions that I never imagined 想象 previously 先前.

Oh, how weary 厌倦 I grow 生长；种植.  How I writhed, and yawned 打哈欠, and nodded 点头, and revived 复活!  How I pinched 捏 and pricked 刺 myself 我, and rubbed 擦 my eyes, and stood stand up, and sat 坐:sit down again, and nudged 微调 Joseph to inform 通知 me if he would ever 永远；曾经 have done.  I was condemned 谴责 to hear all out: finally 最后, he reached 到达 the ‘First of the Seventy-First.’  At that crisis 危机, a sudden 突然的 inspiration 灵感 descended 下来 on me; I was moved to rise 上升 and den‧ounce 声讨 Jabez Branderham as the sinner 罪 of the sin 罪 that no Christian need pardon 宽恕；说啥？.

‘ Sir 先生,’ I exclaimed 喊叫, ‘ sitting 坐 here within 在内 these four walls 墙, at one stretch 伸展, I have endured 忍受 and forgiven 原谅:forgive the four hundred 百 and ninety 九十 heads of your discourse 演讲.  Seventy times seven 七 times have I plucked 采摘 up my hat 帽子 and been about to depart 离开—Seventy times seven 七 times have you preposterously forced me to resume 恢复 my seat 席位.  The four hundred 百 and ninety 九十-first is too much.  Fellow 同伴-martyrs 烈士, have at him!  Drag 拖拽 him down, and crush 压破 him to atoms 原子, that the place which knows him may know him no more many!’

‘Thou art the Man!’ cried 哭，叫喊 Jabez, after a solemn 庄严的 pause 暂停, leaning 靠 over his cushion 垫子.  ‘Seventy times seven 七 times didst thou 汝 gapingly contort thy 你的 visage—seventy 七十 times seven 七 did I take counsel 法律顾问 with my soul 灵魂—Lo, this is human 人 weakness 弱点: this also may be absolved!  The First of the Seventy-First is come.  Brethren, execute 执行 upon him the judgment 判断 written write.  Such honour have all His saints 圣!’

With that concluding 得出结论 word, the whole 全部的 assembly 部件, exalting their pilgrim 朝圣’s staves, rushed 仓促 round 8 me in a body 身体; and I, having no weapon 武器 to raise 提升；种 in self 自己-defence, commenced 开始 grappling 抓钩 with Joseph, my nearest and most many ferocious 凶猛 assailant, for his.  In the confluence of the multitude 苠, several clubs 俱乐部 crossed 穿过；十字; blows 吹；殴打, aimed 瞄准 at me, fell 落下:fall on other sconces.  Presently the whole 6 chapel 教堂 resounded 回响 with rappings 敲击 and counter 反；表面 rappings 敲击: every man’s hand was against his neighbour; and Branderham, unwilling 不甘 to remain 留；剩余 idle 无意义的, poured 淋；倒 forth 向前 his zeal 热情 in ashower 阵雨 of loud 响亮的 taps 敲；龙头；汲取（液体） on the boards 板，上船 of the pulpit 讲坛, which responded 响应 so smartly 聪明 that, at last, to my unspeakable relief 宽慰, they woke 醒:wake me.  And what was it that had suggested 建议 the tremendous 巨大 tumult?  What had played Jabez’s part in the row 行?  Merely 仅仅，只，不过 the branch 树枝 of a fir 冷杉-tree 树 that touched 触摸 my lattice 格子 as the blast 爆破 wailed 哀号 by, and rattled 霸王鞭 its dry 干燥 cones 锥体 against the panes 窗格!  I listened 倾听 doubtingly an instant 瞬间; detected 发现，察觉，看出 the disturber 打扰, then turned and dozed, and dreamt 做梦 again: if possible, still more many disagreeably than before.

This time, I remembered 记得 I was lying 躺；说谎 in the oak 橡木 closet 壁橱, and I heard hear distinctly 历历 the gusty wind 风, and the driving 驾驶 of the snow 雪；下雪; I heard hear, also, the fir 冷杉 bough repeat 重复 its teasing 逗 sound 声音, and ascribed 归咎于 it to the right cause 原因；引起: but it annoyed 打扰 me so much, that I resolved 解决 to silence 沉默 it, if possible; and, I thought think, I rose 上升:rise and endeavoured to unhasp the casement.  The hook 钩 was soldered into the staple 钉书针: a circumstance 环境 observed 观察 by me when awake 醒着的, but forgotten 忘记:forget.  ‘I must stop 停止 it, nevertheless 虽然!’ I muttered 咕哝, knocking 敲 my knuckles 指关节 through the glass 玻璃, and stretching 伸展 an arm 手臂 out to seize 抓住 the importunate branch 树枝; instead 代替 of which, my fingers 手指 closed on the fingers of a little, ice 冰- cold 寒冷的 hand!  The intense 强烈的，极度的 horror 恐怖 of night‧mare 恶梦 came over me: I tried to draw 绘画 back my arm 手臂, but the hand clung to it, and a most many melancholy 愁绪 voice 嗓音 sobbed 哭泣, ‘Let me in—let me in!’  ‘Who are you?’ I asked, struggling 挣扎；搏斗, mean‧while 同时, to disengage myself 我.  ‘Catherine Linton,’ it replied 回答, shiveringly (why did I think of Linton?  I had read Earnshaw twenty 二十 times for Linton)—‘I’m come home: I’d lost 失去的 my way on the moor 泊!’  As it spoke 讲:speak, I discerned 辨别, obscurely 朦胧, a child’s face looking through the window 窗.  Terror made me cruel 残酷的; and, finding it use‧less 无用 to attempt 试图 shaking 摇晃 the creature 动物；生物 off, I pulled 拉 its wrist 腕 on to the broken 破碎的 pane 窗格, and rubbed 擦 it to and fro 来来往往 till 9 the blood 血 ran run down and soaked 浸泡 the bed‧clothes 床‧衣服，衣物: still it wailed 哀号, ‘Let me in!’ and maintained 保持 its tenacious grip 握, almost maddening me with fear 害怕.  ‘How can I!’ I said at length 长度.  ‘Let me go, if you want me to let you in!’  The fingers 手指 relaxed 放松, I snatched 抢夺 mine 我的 through the hole 洞, hurriedly piled 堆 the books 书 up in a pyramid 金字塔 against it, and stopped 停止 my ears 耳朵 to exclude 阻止…进入；把…排斥在外 the lament‧able 哀叹‧能够的 prayer 祈祷.  I seemed to keep them closed above 之上 a quarter 四分之一 of an hour 小时; yet, the instant 瞬间 I listened 倾听 again, there was the doleful cry 哭，叫喊 moaning 呻吟 on!  ‘Begone!’ I shouted 呼喊.  ‘I’ll never let you in, not if you beg 乞讨 for twenty 二十 years.’  ‘It is twenty 二十 years,’ mourned 悼 the voice 嗓音: ‘twenty 二十 years.  I’ve been a waif for twenty 二十 years!’  Thereat began begin a feeble 微弱 scratching 刮 out‧side 在外面, and the pile 堆 of books 书 moved as if thrust 推力 forward 前进地.  I tried to jump 跳 up; but could not stir 搅动 a limb 肢; and so yelled 叫喊 aloud 高声, in a frenzy 发狂 of fright 恐怖.  To my confusion 混乱, I discovered 发现 the yell 叫喊 was not ideal 理想的: hasty 匆 foot‧step 脚步 approached 靠近 my chamber 室 door; some‧body 某人 pushed 推 it open, with a vigorous 蓬勃 hand, and a light glimmered through the squares 正方形；广场 at thetop 顶 of the bed 床.  I sat 坐:sit shuddering 不寒而栗 yet, and wiping 擦 the perspiration from my fore‧head 前额: the intruder 侵入者 appeared 出现 to hesitate 犹豫, and muttered 咕哝 to himself 6.  At last, he said, in a half 6- whisper 低声说, plainly 平原；明显 not expecting an answer 答复, ‘Is any one here?’  I considered it best 最好 to confess 供认 my presence 出席; for I knew know Heathcliff’s accents 口音, and feared 害怕 he might search 搜寻 further 更远的, if I kept keep quiet 清静的.  With this intention 意图, I turned and opened the panels 面板.  I shall 7 not soon 立刻 forget 忘记 the effect 影响 my action 行动 produced 生产.

Heathcliff stood stand near the entrance 入口, in his shirt 衬衫 and trousers 长裤; with a candle 蜡烛 dripping 滴 over his fingers 手指, and his face as white 白色的 as the wall 墙 behind 之后 him.  The first creak 吱吱 of the oak 橡木 startled 惊吓 him like an electric 电的 shock 震惊；震动: the light leaped 飞跃 from his hold to a distance 距离 of some feet, and his agitation 搅动 was so extreme 极端的, that he could hardly 几乎不 pick 挑选 it up.

‘It is only your guest 客人, sir 先生,’ I called out, desirous to spare 节省；多余的；备用件 him the humiliation 屈辱 of exposing 暴露 his coward‧ice 懦弱 further 更远的.  ‘I had the misfortune 不幸 to scream 叫喊 in my sleep 睡, owing 欠…债 to a frightful night‧mare 恶梦.  I’m sorry 对不起的 I disturbed 打扰 you.’

‘Oh, God confound 混淆 you, Mr. Lockwood!  I wish 希望 you were at the—’ commenced 开始 my host 主人, setting the candle 蜡烛 on achair 椅子, because he found find it impossible 不可能的 to hold it steady 稳定的.  ‘And who showed show you up into this room?’ he continued, crushing 压破 his nails 钉子 into his palms 棕榈, and grinding 磨碎 his teeth to subdue 征服 the maxillary convulsions.  ‘Who was it?  I’ve a good mind to turn them out of the house this moment 瞬间?’

‘It was your servant 仆人 Zillah,’ I replied 回答, flinging 一扔 myself 我 on to the floor 地面, and rapidly 快速地 resuming 恢复 my garments 服装.  ‘I should not care 关心 if you did, Mr. Heathcliff; she richly 富有的 deserves 应受 it.  I suppose 假定 that she wanted to get another proof 证明 that the place was haunted 出没, at my expense 费用.  Well, it is—swarming 一群 with ghosts 鬼 and goblins!  You have reason 理由 in shutting 关闭 it up, I assure 向…保证；肯定地说 you.  No one will thank 谢谢 you for a doze in such a den 巢穴!’

‘What do you mean?’ asked Heathcliff, ‘and what are you doing?  Lie 躺；说谎 down and finish 完成 out the night, since you are here; but, for heaven 天’s sake 缘故! don’t repeat 重复 that horrid noise 噪音: nothing could excuse 原谅 it, unless 除非 you were having your throat 咽喉 cut 砍!’

‘If the little fiend had got get in at the window 窗, she probably 很可能；大概 would have strangled 扼杀 me!’ I returned 回转.  ‘I’m not going to endure 忍受 the persecutions 迫害 of your hospitable ancestors 祖先 again.  Was not the Reverend Jabez Branderham akin 类似的 to you on the mother 母亲’s side?  And that minx, Catherine Linton, or Earnshaw, or however she was called—she must have been a changeling— wicked 邪恶的 little soul 灵魂!  She told tell me she had been walking 走；步行同道 the earth 地球 these twenty 二十 years: a just punishment 惩罚 for her mortal 凡人 transgressions, I’ve no doubt 怀疑!’

Scarcely were these words uttered 说出 when I recollected the association 协会 of Heathcliff’s with Catherine’s name in the book 书, which had completely slipped 滑 from my memory 记忆, till 10 thus 于是 awakened 憬.  I blushed 脸红 at my inconsideration: but, without showing further 更远的 consciousness 意识 of the offence, I hastened 加速 to add 增加—‘The truth 真理 is, sir 9, I passed 走过 the first part of the night in—’  Here I stopped 停止 afresh—I was about to say ‘perusing those old volumes 卷,’ then it would have revealed 揭示 my knowledge 知识；了解 of their written write, as well as their printed 印刷, contents 内容; so, correcting 正确的 myself 我, I went on—‘in spelling 拼写 over the name scratched 刮 on that window 窗-ledge 窗台.  A monotonous occupation 占用, calculated 计算 to set me asleep 睡着的, like counting 数；总数, or—’

‘What can you mean by talking 说话 in this way to me!’ thundered 雷声 Heathcliff with savage 野蛮人 vehemence.  ‘How—how dare 敢 you, under my roof 屋顶?—God! he’s mad 疯狂的 to speak 讲 so!’  And he struck 敲击:strike his fore‧head 前额 with rage 愤怒.
