CHAPTER 章节 I.

YOU don’t know about me without you have read a book 书 by the name of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer; but that ain’t no matter.  That book was made by Mr. Mark 斑点；标注 Twain, and he told tell the truth 真理, mainly 通常地；主要地；大部分地.  There was things which he stretched 伸展, but mainly he told tell the truth.  That is nothing.  I never seen see any‧body 任何人 but lied 躺；说谎:lie one time or another, without it was Aunt 阿姨 Polly, or the widow 寡妇, or maybe 也许 Mary.   Aunt Polly—Tom’s Aunt Polly, she is—and Mary, and the Widow Douglas is all told tell about in that book 书, which is mostly a true 真正的 book, with some stretchers, as I said before.

Now the way that the book winds 风 up is this:  Tom and me found find the money 钱 that the robbers 强盗 hid 隐藏:hide in the cave 洞穴, and it made us rich 富有的.  We got get six 6 thou‧sand 千 dollars 美元 apiece—all gold 金.  It was an awful 糟糕的 sight 视力 of money 钱 when it was piled 堆 up.  Well, Judge 审判 Thatcher he took it and put it out at interest, and it fetched 取 us a dollar 美元 a day apiece all the year round 圆形的；围绕—more many than a body 身体 could tell what to do with.  The Widow 寡妇 Douglas she took me for her son 儿子, and allowed 允许 she would sivilize me; but it was rough 粗糙的 living in the house all the time, considering how dismal 惨淡 regular 有规律的 and decent 正经 the widow was in all her ways; and so when I couldn’t stand it no longer I lit light out.  I got get into my old rags 抹布 and my sugar 食糖-hogshead again, and was free 自由的 and satisfied 使满意.  But Tom Sawyer he hunted 打猎 me up and said he was going to start a band 带 of robbers 强盗, and I might join 连接 if I would go back to the widow 寡妇 and be respect‧able 可敬.  So I went back.

The widow she cried 哭，叫喊 over me, and called me a poor 贫穷的 lost 失去的 lamb 羊肉, and she called me a lot 大量；份额 of other names, too, but she never meant mean no harm 损害 by it. She put me in them new clothes 衣服，衣物 again, and I couldn’t do nothing but sweat 流汗 and sweat, and feel all cramped 抽筋 up.  Well, then, the old thing commenced 开始 again.  The widow 寡妇 rung 戒指；打电话:ring a bell 钟 for supper 晚饭, and you had to come to time. When you got get to the table 桌；表 you couldn’t go right to eating 吃, but you had to wait 等候 for the widow 寡妇 to tuck 掖 down her head and grumble 叽 a little over the victuals, though there warn 警告’t really any‧thing 任何东西 the matter with them,—that is, nothing only every‧thing 每件事物 was cooked 烹调 by itself 本身.  In a barrel 桶 of odds 奇 and ends it is different 不同的; things get mixed 混合 up, and the juice 果汁 kind of swaps 交换 around, and the things go better well.

After supper 晚饭 she got get out her book 书 and learned 学习:learn me about Moses and the Bulrushers, and I was in a sweat 流汗 to find out all about him; but by and by she let it out that Moses had been dead 死去的 a consider‧able 大量 long time; so then I didn’t care 关心 no more many about him, because I don’t take no stock 股份 in dead people.

Pretty 漂亮的 soon 立刻 I wanted to smoke 烟, and asked the widow 寡妇 to let me.  But she wouldn’t.  She said it was a mean practice 练习 and wasn’t clean 清理；清洁的, and I must try to not do it any more many.  That is just the way with some people.  They get down on a thing when they don’t know nothing about it.  Here she was a-bothering 烦 about Moses, which was no kin 亲属 to her, and no use to any‧body 任何人, being 存在 gone, you see, yet finding a power of fault 缺点 with me for doing a thing that had some good in it.  And she took snuff, too; of course that was all right, because she done it her‧self 她自己.

Her sister 姐妹, Miss 错过；想念 Watson, a tolerable slim 瘦 old maid 女佣, with goggles 护目镜 on, had just come to live with her, and took a set at me now with a spelling 拼写-book 6. She worked me middling 中部 hard 硬；困难的 for about an hour 小时, and then the widow 9 made her ease 轻松 up.  I couldn’t stood stand it much longer.  Then for an hour it was deadly 死去的 dull 钝的；没兴趣, and I was fidgety.   Miss 错过；想念 Watson would say, “Don’t put your feet up there, Huckleberry;” and “Don’t scrunch up like that, Huckleberry—set up straight 直的;” and pretty 漂亮的 soon 立刻 she would say, “Don’t gap 缺口 and stretch 伸展 like that, Huckleberry—why don’t you try to behave 表现?”  Then she told tell me all about the bad 坏的 place, and I said I wished 希望 I was there. She got get mad 疯狂的 then, but I didn’t mean no harm 损害.  All I wanted was to go some‧where 某处; all I wanted was a change, I warn 警告’t particular 特别的.  She said it was wicked 邪恶的 to say what I said; said she wouldn’t say it for the whole 全部的 world; she was going to live so as to go to the good place.  Well, I couldn’t see no advantage 有利条件 in going where she was going, so I made up my mind I wouldn’t try for it.  But I never said so, because it would only make trouble 麻烦, and wouldn’t do no good.

Now she had got get a start, and she went on and told tell me all about the good place.  She said all a body 身体 would have to do there was to go around all day long with a harp 竖琴 and sing 唱, for‧ever 永远 and ever 永远；曾经.  So I didn’t think much of it. But I never said so.  I asked her if she reckoned 估计 Tom Sawyer would go there, and she said not by a consider‧able 大量 sight 视力.  I was glad 高兴的 about that, because I wanted him and me to be together 同时.

Miss 错过；想念 Watson she kept keep pecking 啄 at me, and it got get tire‧some 使…疲惫‧一些 and lone‧some 孤单‧一些.  By and by they fetched 取 the niggers in and had prayers 祷告, and then every‧body 每人 was off to bed 床.  I went up to my room with a piece 块 of candle 蜡烛, and put it on the table 桌；表.  Then I set down in a chair 椅子 by the window 窗 and tried to think of something cheerful 快乐, but it warn 警告’t no use.  I felt feel so lone‧some 孤单‧一些 I most many wished 希望 I was dead 死去的.  The stars 星 were shining 发光, and the leaves rustled 沙沙 in the woods 木材；树林 ever 永远；曾经 so mournful; and I heard hear an owl 猫头鹰, away off, who-whooing about some‧body 某人 that was dead 死去的, and a whippowill and a dog 狗 crying 哭，叫喊 about somebody that was going to die 死亡; and the wind 风 was trying to whisper 低声说 something to me, and I couldn’t make out what it was, and so it made the cold 寒冷的 shivers 发抖 run over me. Then away out in the woods 木材；树林 I heard hear that kind of a sound 声音 that a ghost 鬼 makes when it wants to tell about something that’s on its mind and can’t make itself 本身 understood 懂:understand, and so can’t rest 休息，其余 easy 容易的 in its grave 坟墓；严重的, and has to go about that way every night grieving 悼.  I got get so down-hearted 心 and scared 惊恐 I did wish 希望 I had some company.   Pretty 漂亮的 soon 立刻 a spider 蜘蛛 went crawling 爬行 up my shoulder 肩膀, and I flipped 翻动 it off and it lit light in the candle 蜡烛; and before I could budge it was all shriveled up.  I didn’t need any‧body 任何人 to tell me that that was an awful 糟糕的 bad 坏的 sign 符号 and would fetch 取 me some bad luck 运气, so I was scared 惊恐 and most many shook 摇晃:shake the clothes 衣服，衣物 off of me. I got get up and turned around in my tracks 小路 three times and crossed 穿过；十字 my breast 乳房 every time; and then I tied 打结；系上；关系 up a little lock 锁 of my hair 头发 with a thread 线 to keep witches 巫婆 away.  But I hadn’t no confidence 信心.  You do that when you’ve lost 失去的 a horse‧shoe 马‧鞋 that you’ve found find, instead 代替 of nailing 钉子 it up over the door 门, but I hadn’t ever 永远；曾经 heard hear any‧body 任何人 say it was any way to keep off bad 坏的 luck 运气 when you’d killed 杀死… a spider 蜘蛛.

I set down again, a-shaking 摇晃 all over, and got get out my pipe 管子 for a smoke 烟; for the house was all as still as death 死亡 now, and so the widow 10 wouldn’t know. Well, after a long time I heard hear the clock 钟 away off in the town 城镇 go boom 繁荣—boom 繁荣—boom 繁荣—twelve 十二 licks 舔; and all still again—stiller than ever 永远；曾经. Pretty 漂亮的 soon 立刻 I heard hear a twig 枝条 snap 卡 down in the dark 黑暗的 amongst 之中 the trees 树—something was a stirring 搅动.  I set still and listened 倾听.  Directly I could just barely 光秃秃的 hear a “me-yow! me-yow!” down there.  That was good!  Says I, “me-yow! me-yow!” as soft 软的 as I could, and then I put out the light and scrambled 争夺 out of the window 窗 on to the shed.  Then I slipped 滑 down to the ground 地面 and crawled 爬行 in among 之间 the trees 树, and, sure 确信的 enough, there was Tom Sawyer waiting 等候 for me.

CHAPTER 章节 II.

WE went tiptoeing along 一起 a path 小路 amongst 之中 the trees 树 back towards the end of the widow 11’s garden 菜园；花园, stooping 哈腰 down so as the branches 树枝 wouldn’t scrape 擦 our heads. “Say, who is you?  Whar is you?   Dog 狗 my cats 猫 ef I didn’ hear sumf’n. Well, I know what I’s gwyne to do:  I’s gwyne to set down here and listen 倾听 tell I hears it agin.”

So he set down on the ground 地面 betwixt me and Tom.  He leaned 靠:lean his back up against a tree 树, and stretched 伸展 his legs 腿 out till 到 one of them most many touched 触摸 one of mine 我的.  My nose 鼻子 begun begin to itch 痒.  It itched 痒 till the tears 撕裂；泪 come into my eyes.  But I dasn’t scratch 刮.  Then it begun begin to itch 痒 on the inside 里面的. Next I got get to itching 痒 underneath 在...之下.  I didn’t know how I was going to set still. This miserableness went on as much as six 6 or seven 七 minutes 分; but it seemed a sight 视力 longer than that.  I was itching 痒 in eleven 十一 different 不同的 places now.  I reckoned 估计 I couldn’t stand it more many’n a minute 分 longer, but I set my teeth hard 硬；困难的 and got get ready 准备好的 to try.  Just then Jim begun begin to breathe 呼吸 heavy 厚实；重的; next he begun begin to snore 鼾—and then I was pretty 漂亮的 soon 立刻 comfort‧able 舒服；自在 again.

Then Tom said he hadn’t got get candles 蜡烛 enough, and he would slip 滑 in the kitchen 厨房 and get some more many.  I didn’t want him to try.  I said Jim might wake up and come.  But Tom wanted to resk it; so we slid 滑落:slide in there and got get three candles 蜡烛, and Tom laid 放置:lay five cents 分 on the table 桌；表 for pay. Then we got get out, and I was in a sweat 流汗 to get away; but nothing would do Tom but he must crawl 爬行 to where Jim was, on his hands and knees 膝, and play something on him.  I waited 等候, and it seemed a good while, every‧thing 每件事物 was so still and lone‧some 孤单‧一些.

Afterwards Jim said the witches 巫婆 be witched 巫婆 him and put him in a trance, and rode 乘:ride him all over the State, and then set him under the trees 树 again, and hung 悬挂:hang his hat 帽子 on a limb 肢 to show who done it.  And next time Jim told tell it he said they rode him down to New Orleans; and, after that, every time he told tell it he spread 伸开 it more many and more many, till 到 by and by he said they rode him all over the world, and tired 使…疲惫 him most many to death 死亡, and his back was all over saddle 马鞍-boils 煮沸.  Jim was monstrous 滔天 proud 自豪的 about it, and he got get so he wouldn’t hardly 几乎不 notice 注意 the other niggers.  Niggers would come miles 英里 to hear Jim tell about it, and he was more many looked up to than any nigger in that country.   Strange 奇怪；陌生 niggers would stand with their mouths 口 open and look him all over, same as if he was a wonder 琢磨；奇妙.  Niggers is always talking 说话 about witches 巫婆 in the dark 黑暗的 by the kitchen 厨房 fire 火; but when‧ever 随时 one was talking and letting on to know all about such things, Jim would happen 发生 in and say, “Hm!  What you know ‘bout 回合 witches 巫婆?” and that nigger was corked 软木塞 up and had to take a back seat 席位.  Jim always kept keep that five-center piece 块 round 圆形的；围绕 his neck 颈 with a string 绳子, and said it was a charm 魔力；使陶醉 the devil 魔鬼 give to him with his own hands, and told tell him he could cure 治愈 any‧body 任何人 with it and fetch 取 witches 巫婆 when‧ever 随时 he wanted to just by saying something to it; but he never told tell what it was he said to it.  Niggers would come from all around there and give Jim any‧thing 任何东西 they had, just for a sight 视力 of that five-center piece 块; but they wouldn’t touch 触摸 it, because the devil 魔鬼 had had his hands on it.  Jim was most many ruined 破坏 for a servant 仆人, because he got get stuck 棍；粘贴:stick up on account 账；解释 of having seen see the devil and been rode 乘:ride by witches 巫婆.

Well, when Tom and me got get to the edge 边 of the hill‧top 小山‧顶 we looked away down into the village 村庄 and could see three or four lights twinkling 眨眼, where there was sick 病；恶心 folks 民间, maybe 也许; and the stars 星 over us was sparkling 火花 ever 永远；曾经 so fine 好的; and down by the village 村庄 was the river 河, a whole 全部的 mile 英里 broad 宽阔的, and awful 糟糕的 still and grand 宏大的.  We went down the hill 小山 and found find Jo Harper and Ben Rogers, and two or three more many of the boys, hid 隐藏:hide in the old tan‧yard 黄褐色‧院子.  So we unhitched a skiff and pulled 拉 down the river 河 two mile 英里 and a half 一半的, to the big scar 瘢痕 on the hill‧side 山坡, and went ashore 岸上.

Tom poked 戳 about amongst 之中 the pass‧age 通道, and pretty 7 soon 7 ducked 鸭子 under a wall 墙 where you wouldn’t a noticed 注意 that there was a hole 洞.  We went along 一起 a narrow 狭窄的 place and got get into a kind of room, all damp 微湿的 and sweaty 出汗 and cold 寒冷的, and there we stopped 停止.  Tom says:

“Now, we’ll start this band 带 of robbers 强盗 and call it Tom Sawyer’s Gang. Everybody 每人 that wants to join 连接 has got get to take an oath 誓言, and write his name in blood 血.”

Everybody was willing.  So Tom got get out a sheet 纸 of paper 纸；报纸 that he had wrote write the oath 誓言 on, and read it.  It swore 发誓:swear every boy to stick 棍；粘贴 to the band 带, and never tell any of the secrets 秘密; and if any‧body 任何人 done any‧thing 任何东西 to any boy in the band, which‧ever 任何一个 boy was ordered to kill 杀死… that person and his family must do it, and he mustn’t eat 吃 and he mustn’t sleep 睡 till 到 he had killed 杀死… them and hacked 劈 a cross 穿过；十字 in their breasts 乳房, which was the sign 符号 of the band 带. And nobody 没有人 that didn’t belong 属于 to the band could use that mark 斑点；标注, and if he did he must be sued 起诉; and if he done it again he must be killed 杀死….  And if any‧body 任何人 that belonged 属于 to the band told tell the secrets 秘密, he must have his throat 咽喉 cut 砍, and then have his carcass 胴体 burnt 烧:burn up and the ashes 灰 scattered 散落 all around, and his name blotted 斑点 off of the list 清单 with blood 血 and never mentioned 提到 again by the gang 结伙, but have a curse 诅咒 put on it and be forgot 忘记:forget for‧ever 永远.

Everybody 每人 said it was a real beautiful 美丽 oath 誓言, and asked Tom if he got get it out of his own head.  He said, some of it, but the rest 休息，其余 was out of pirate 海盗-books 书 and robber 抢劫- books, and every gang 结伙 that was high-toned 音 had it.

Some thought think it would be good to kill 杀死… the families of boys that told tell the secrets 秘密.  Tom said it was a good idea 主意, so he took a pencil 铅笔 and wrote write it in. Then Ben Rogers says:

“Here’s Huck Finn, he hain’t got get no family; what you going to do ‘bout 回合 him?”

“Well, hain’t he got get a father 父亲?” says Tom Sawyer.

“Yes, he’s got get a father, but you can’t never find him these days.  He used to lay 放置 drunk 醉的 with the hogs 豕 in the tan‧yard 黄褐色‧院子, but he hain’t been seen see in these parts for a year or more many.”

They talked 说话 it over, and they was going to rule 规则 me out, because they said every boy must have a family or some‧body 某人 to kill 杀死…, or else 其他 it wouldn’t be fair 公平；美丽 and square 正方形；广场 for the others 别的.  Well, nobody 没有人 could think of any‧thing 任何东西 to do— every‧body 每人 was stumped 树墩, and set still.  I was most many ready 准备好的 to cry 哭，叫喊; but all at once I thought think of a way, and so I offered 提供 them Miss 错过；想念 Watson—they could kill 杀死… her.   Everybody 每人 said:

“Oh, she’ll do.  That’s all right.  Huck can come in.”

Then they all stuck 棍；粘贴:stick a pin 钉 in their fingers 手指 to get blood 血 to sign 符号 with, and I made my mark 斑点；标注 on the paper 纸；报纸.

“Now,” says Ben Rogers, “what’s the line of business of this Gang?”

“Nothing only robbery 抢劫案 and murder 谋杀,” Tom said.

“But who are we going to rob 抢劫?—houses, or cattle 牛, or—”

“ Stuff 塞满；材料! stealing 偷 cattle and such things ain’t robbery 抢劫案; it’s burglary 窃案,” says Tom Sawyer.  "We ain’t burglars 窃贼.  That ain’t no sort 分类 of style 样式.  We are highwaymen.  We stop 停止 stages 阶段 and carriages 运输 on the road 路, with masks 面具 on, and kill 杀死… the people and take their watches 钟表；注视 and money 钱.”

“Must we always kill the people?”

“Ransomed?  What’s that?”

“I don’t know.  But that’s what they do.  I’ve seen see it inbooks 书; and so of course that’s what we’ve got get to do.”

“But how can we do it if we don’t know what it is?”

“Why, blame 指责 it all, we’ve got get to do it.  Don’t I tell you it’s in the books?  Do you want to go to doing different 不同的 from what’s in the books, and get things all muddled 糊涂 up?”

“Oh, that’s all very fine 好的 to say, Tom Sawyer, but how in the nation are these fellows 同伴 going to be ransomed 赎金 if we don’t know how to do it to them?—that’s the thing I want to get at.  Now, what do you reckon 估计 it is?”

“Well, I don’t know.  But per’aps if we keep them till 到 they’re ransomed 赎金, it means that we keep them till they’re dead 死去的.”

“Now, that’s something like.  That’ll answer 答复.  Why couldn’t you said that before?  We’ll keep them till they’re ransomed 赎金 to death 死亡; and a bother‧some 打搅，操心‧一些 lot 大量；份额 they’ll be, too— eating 吃 up every‧thing 每件事物, and always trying to get loose 松的.”

“How you talk 说话, Ben Rogers.  How can they get loose when there’s a guard 警卫 over them, ready 准备好的 to shoot 射击；拍摄 them down if they move a peg 衣夹?”

“A guard!  Well, that is good.  So some‧body 某人’s got get to set up all night and never get any sleep 睡, just so as to watch 钟表；注视 them.  I think that’s foolishness. Why can’t a body 身体 take a club 俱乐部 and ransom 赎金 them as soon 8 as they get here?”

“Because it ain’t in thebooks 书 so—that’s why.  Now, Ben Rogers, do you want to do things regular 有规律的, or don’t you?—that’s the idea 主意.  Don’t you reckon 估计 that the people that made the books 6 knows what’s the correct 正确的 thing to do?  Do you reckon 估计 you can learn 学习 ‘em any‧thing 任何东西?  Not by a good deal 很多；对付. No, sir 先生, we’ll just go on and ransom 赎金 them in the regular 有规律的 way.”

“All right.  I don’t mind; but I say it’s a fool 愚人 way, anyhow 总之.  Say, do we kill 7 the women, too?”

“Well, Ben Rogers, if I was as ignorant 愚昧 as you I wouldn’t let on.  Kill 8 the women?  No; nobody 没有人 ever 永远；曾经 saw see any‧thing 任何东西 in the books 7 like that.  You fetch 取 them to the cave 洞穴, and you’re always as polite 有礼貌的 as pie 馅饼 to them; and by and by they fall 落下 in love 爱 with you, and never want to go home any more many.”

“Well, if that’s the way I’m agreed 同意, but I don’t take no stock 股份 in it. Mighty soon 9 we’ll have the cave 洞穴 so cluttered 杂波 up with women, and fellows 同伴 waiting 等候 to be ransomed 赎金, that there won 赢:win’t be no place for the robbers 强盗. But go ahead 前面；往前, I ain’t got get nothing to say.”

Little Tommy Barnes was asleep 睡着的 now, and when they waked 醒 him up he was scared 惊恐, and cried 哭，叫喊, and said he wanted to go home to his ma 嘛, and didn’t want to be a robber 抢劫 any more many.

So they all made fun 乐趣 of him, and called him cry 哭，叫喊-baby 婴儿, and that made him mad 疯狂的, and he said he would go straight 直的 and tell all the secrets 秘密.  But Tom give him five cents 分 to keep quiet 清静的, and said we would all go home and meet next week, and rob 抢劫 some‧body 某人 and kill 9 some people.

Ben Rogers said he couldn’t get out much, only Sundays, and so he wanted to begin next Sunday; but all the boys said it would be wicked 邪恶的 to do it on Sunday, and that settled 解决；定居 the thing.  They agreed 同意 to get together 同时 and fix 固定 a day as soon 10 as they could, and then we elected 选举 Tom Sawyer first captain 船长 and Jo Harper second captain of the Gang, and so started home.

CHAPTER 章节 III.

WELL, I got get a good going-over in the morning 早晨 from old Miss 错过；想念 Watson on account 账；解释 of my clothes 衣服，衣物; but the widow 12 she didn’t scold 责骂, but only cleaned 清理；清洁的 off the grease 油脂 and clay 黏土, and looked so sorry 对不起的 that I thought think I would behave 表现 awhile 一会儿 if I could.  Then Miss 错过；想念 Watson she took me in the closet 壁橱 and prayed 祈祷, but nothing come of it.  She told tell me to pray 祈祷 every day, and what‧ever 无论什么 I asked for I would get it.  But it warn 警告’t so.  I tried it. Once I got get a fish 鱼-line, but no hooks 钩.  It warn’t any good to me without hooks.  I tried for the hooks three or four times, but some‧how 某种方法 I couldn’t make it work.  By and by, one day, I asked Miss 7 Watson to try for me, but she said I was a fool 愚人.  She never told tell me why, and I couldn’t make it out no way.

I set down one time back in the woods 木材；树林, and had a long think about it.  I says to myself 我, if a body 身体 can get anything 6 they pray 祈祷 for, why don’t Deacon Winn get back the money 钱 he lost 失去的 on pork 猪肉?  Why can’t the widow 13 get back her silver 银 snuffbox that was stole?  Why can’t Miss 8 Watson fat 肥的 up? No, says I to my self 自己, there ain’t nothing in it.  I went and told tell the widow 14 about it, and she said the thing a body 身体 could get by praying 祈祷 for it was “spiritual 精神 gifts 赠品.”  This was too many for me, but she told tell me what she meant mean—I must help other people, and do every‧thing 每件事物 I could for other people, and look out for them all the time, and never think about myself 我. This was including 包括 Miss 9 Watson, as I took it.  I went out in the woods 木材；树林 and turned it over in my mind a long time, but I couldn’t see no advantage 有利条件 about it— except 把…除外 for the other people; so at last I reckoned 估计 I wouldn’t worry 烦恼 about it any more many, but just let it go.   Sometimes 有时 the widow 15 would take me one side and talk 说话 about Providence in a way to make a body 身体’s mouth 口 water; but maybe 也许 next day Miss 10 Watson would take hold and knock 敲 it all down again.  I judged 审判 I could see that there was two Providences, and a poor 贫穷的 chap 皴裂 would stand consider‧able 大量 show with the widow’s Providence, but if Miss 11 Watson’s got get him there warn 警告’t no help for him any more many.  I thought think it all out, and reckoned 估计 I would belong 属于 to the widow’s if he wanted me, though I couldn’t make out how he was a-going to be any better well off then than what he was before, seeing I was so ignorant 愚昧, and so kind of low 低的-down and ornery.

Pap he hadn’t been seen see for more many than a year, and that was comfort‧able 舒服；自在 for me; I didn’t want to see him no more many.  He used to always whale 鲸 me when he was sober 清醒 and could get his hands on me; though I used to take to the woods 木材；树林 most many of the time when he was around.  Well, about this time he was found find in the river 河 drownded, about twelve 十二 mile 英里 above 之上 town 城镇, so people said.  They judged 审判 it was him, anyway 无论如何; said this drownded man was just his size 大小, and was ragged 抹布, and had uncommon 罕见 long hair 头发, which was all like pap; but they couldn’t make nothing out of the face, because it had been in the water so long it warn 8’t much like a face at all.  They said he was floating 漂浮 on his back in the water.  They took him and buried 埋葬 him on the bank 银行；岸.  But I warn 9’t comfort‧able 舒服；自在 long, because I happened 发生 to think of something.  I knowed mighty 威武 well that a drownded man don’t float 漂浮 on his back, but on his face.  So I knowed, then, that this warn 10’t pap, but a woman dressed 衣服 up in a man’s clothes 衣服，衣物.  So I was uncomfortable 不舒服 again.  I judged 审判 the old man would turn up again by and by, though I wished 希望 he wouldn’t.

We played robber 抢劫 now and then about a month 月, and then I resigned 辞职.  All the boys did.  We hadn’t robbed 抢劫 nobody 没有人, hadn’t killed 杀死… any people, but only just pretended 假装.  We used to hop 跳 out of the woods 木材；树林 and go charging 装载 down on hog 豕-drivers 司机 and women in carts 运货马车 taking garden 菜园；花园 stuff 塞满；材料 to market 交易, but we never hived 蜂巢 any of them.  Tom Sawyer called the hogs 豕 “ingots,” and he called the turnips and stuff “julery,” and we would go to the cave 洞穴 and powwow over what we had done, and how many people we had killed 杀死… and marked 斑点；标注.  But I couldn’t see no profit 收益 in it.  One time Tom sent 派遣；送:send a boy to run about town 城镇 with a blazing 火焰 stick 棍；粘贴, which he called a slogan 口号 (which was the sign 符号 for the Gang to get together 同时), and then he said he had got get secret 秘密 news 新闻 by his spies 间谍 that next day a whole 全部的 parcel 包袱 of Spanish merchants 商人 and rich 富有的 A-rabs was going to camp 营地 in Cave 洞穴 Hollow 空的 with two hundred 百 elephants 象, and six 6 hundred 百 camels 骆驼, and over a thou‧sand 千 “sumter” mules 马骡, all loaded 负荷 down with di’monds, and they didn’t have only a guard 警卫 of four hundred 百 soldiers 士兵, and so we would lay 放置 in ambuscade, as he called it, and kill 10 the lot 大量；份额 and scoop 舀 the things.  He said we must slick 华而不实的 up our swords 剑 and guns 枪, and get ready 准备好的.  He never could go after even a turnip-cart 运货马车 but he must have the swords and guns all scoured 冲刷 up for it, though they was only lath and broomsticks, and you might scour 冲刷 at them till 8 you rotted 腐烂, and then they warn 11’t worth 值得的 a mouthful of ashes 灰 more many than what they was before.  I didn’t believe 信任 we could lick 舔 such a crowd 人群；拥挤 of Spaniards and A-rabs, but I wanted to see the camels 骆驼 and elephants 象, so I was on hand next day, Saturday, in the ambuscade; and when we got get the word we rushed 仓促 out of the woods 6 and down the hill 小山.  But there warn 12’t no Spaniards and A-rabs, and there warn 13’t no camels 骆驼 nor 也不 no elephants.  It warn’t anything 7 but a Sunday-school picnic 野餐, and only a primer 底漆-class 班 at that.  We busted 胸围 it up, and chased 追 the children up the hollow 空的; but we never got get anything 8 but some doughnuts and jam 果酱, though Ben Rogers got get a rag 抹布 doll 娃娃, and Jo Harper got get a hymn 圣歌-book 7 and a tract 管道; and then the teacher 教员；教师 charged 装载 in, and made us drop 放下；滴；掉 every‧thing 每件事物 and cut 砍.

 I didn’t see no di’monds, and I told tell Tom Sawyer so.  He said there was loads 负荷 of them there, anyway 无论如何; and he said there was A-rabs there, too, and elephants 象 and things.  I said, why couldn’t we see them, then?  He said if I warn’t so ignorant 愚昧, but had read a book 8 called Don Quixote, I would know without asking.  He said it was all done by enchantment.  He said there was hundreds 百 of soldiers 士兵 there, and elephants and treasure 金银财宝, and so on, but we had enemies 仇敌 which he called magicians 魔术师; and they had turned the whole 全部的 thing into an infant 婴儿 Sunday-school, just out of spite 恶意.  I said, all right; then the thing for us to do was to go for the magicians 魔术师.  Tom Sawyer said I was a numskull.

“Why,” said he, “a magician 魔术师 could call up a lot 大量；份额 of genies, and they would hash you up like nothing before you could say Jack Robinson.  They are as tall 身高；高的 as a tree 树 and as big around as a church.”

“Well,” I says, “s’ pose 以…身份出现，造成 we got get some genies to help us—can’t we lick 舔 the other crowd 人群；拥挤 then?”

“How you going to get them?”

“I don’t know.  How do they get them?”

“Who makes them tear 撕裂；泪 around so?”

“Why, who‧ever 无论谁 rubs 擦 the lamp 灯 or the ring 戒指；打电话.  They belong 属于 to whoever rubs the lamp or the ring, and they’ve got get to do what‧ever 无论什么 he says.  If he tells them to build a palace 宫 forty 四十 miles 英里 long out of di’monds, and fill 装满 it full 满的 of chewing 嚼-gum 胶, or whatever you want, and fetch 取 an emperor 皇帝’s daughter 女儿 from China for you to marry 结婚, they’ve got get to do it—and they’ve got get to do it before sun 太阳-up next morning 早晨, too.  And more many:  they’ve got get to waltz that palace 宫 around over the country wherever 随地 you want it, you under‧stand 懂.”

“Well,” says I, “I think they are a pack 一群 of flat 平的；公寓-heads for not keeping the palace 宫 themselves 他们自己 ‘stead of fooling 愚人 them away like that.  And what’s more many—if I was one of them I would see a man in Jericho before I would drop 放下；滴；掉 my business and come to him for the rubbing 擦 of an old tin 锡 lamp 灯.”

“How you talk 说话, Huck Finn.  Why, you’d have to come when he rubbed 擦 it, whether 是否 you wanted to or not.”

“What! and I as high as a tree 树 and as big as a church?  All right, then; I would come; but I lay 放置 I’d make that man climb 攀登 the highest tree there was in the country.”

“Shucks, it ain’t no use to talk 说话 to you, Huck Finn.  You don’t seem to know anything 9, some‧how 某种方法— perfect 使完善；完美的 sap‧head 树液‧头；上端.”

I thought think all this over for two or three days, and then I reckoned 估计 I would see if there was anything in it.  I got get an old tin 锡 lamp 灯 and an iron 铁器 ring 戒指；打电话, and went out in the woods 7 and rubbed 擦 and rubbed till 9 I sweat 流汗 like an Injun, calculating 计算 to build a palace 宫 and sell 卖 it; but it warn’t no use, none 没有人 of the genies come.  So then I judged 审判 that all that stuff 塞满；材料 was only just one of Tom Sawyer’s lies 躺；说谎.  I reckoned 估计 he believed 信任 in the A-rabs and the elephants 象, but as for me I think different 不同的.  It had all the marks 斑点；标注 of a Sunday-school.

CHAPTER 章节 IV.

WELL, three or four months 月 run along 一起, and it was well into the winter 冬 now. I had been to school most many all the time and could spell 拼写 and read and write just a little, and could say the multiplication 增加 table 桌；表 up to six 6 times seven 七 is thirty 三十-five, and I don’t reckon 估计 I could ever 6 get any further 更远的 than that if I was to live for‧ever 永远.  I don’t take no stock 股份 in mathematics 数学, anyway 无论如何.

At first I hated 仇恨 the school, but by and by I got get so I could stand it. Whenever 随时 I got get uncommon 罕见 tired 使…疲惫 I played hookey, and the hiding 隐藏 I got get next day done me good and cheered 欢呼 me up.  So the longer I went to school the easier 容易的 it got get to be.  I was getting sort 分类 of used to the widow’s ways, too, and they warn’t so raspy on me.  Living in a house and sleeping 睡 in a bed 床 pulled 拉 on me pretty 8 tight 紧的 mostly, but before the cold 寒冷的 weather 天气 I used to slide 滑落 out and sleep 睡 in the woods 8 some‧time 有时, and so that was a rest 休息，其余 to me.  I liked the old ways best 最好, but I was getting so I liked the new ones, too, a little bit 一点. The widow said I was coming along 一起 slow 慢的 but sure 确信的, and doing very satisfactory 满意.  She said she warn’t ashamed 惭愧的 of me.

One morning 早晨 I happened 发生 to turn over the salt 盐-cellar 地窖 at break‧fast 早餐.  I reached 到达 for some of it as quick 快的 as I could to throw 投掷 over my left 左边；留下；离开 shoulder 肩膀 and keep off the bad 坏的 luck 运气, but Miss Watson was in ahead 前面；往前 of me, and crossed 穿过；十字 me off. She says, “Take your hands away, Huckleberry; what a mess 不整洁；弄乱 you are always making!”  The widow put in a good word for me, but that warn’t going to keep off the bad luck, I knowed that well enough.  I started out, after break‧fast 早餐, feeling worried 烦恼 and shaky 摇摇欲坠, and wondering 琢磨；奇妙 where it was going to fall 落下 on me, and what it was going to be.  There is ways to keep off some kinds of bad 坏的 luck 运气, but this wasn’t one of them kind; so I never tried to do anything, but just poked 戳 along 一起 low 低的-spirited 精神 and on the watch 钟表；注视-out.

I went down to the front 前面 garden 菜园；花园 and clumb over the stile where you go through the high board 板，上船 fence 栅栏.  There was an inch 英寸 of new snow 雪；下雪 on the ground 地面, and I seen see some‧body 某人’s tracks 小路.  They had come up from the quarry 采石场 and stood stand around the stile a while, and then went on around the garden 菜园；花园 fence 栅栏.  It was funny 有趣的 they hadn’t come in, after standing around so.  I couldn’t make it out.  It was very curious 好奇的, some‧how 某种方法.  I was going to follow around, but I stooped 哈腰 down to look at the tracks 小路 first.  I didn’t notice 注意 anything at first, but next I did.  There was a cross 穿过；十字 in the left 左边；留下；离开 boot 靴；鞋-heel 脚跟 made with big nails 钉子, to keep off the devil 魔鬼.

I was up in a second and shinning down the hill 小山.  I looked over my shoulder 肩膀 every now and then, but I didn’t see nobody 没有人.  I was at Judge 审判 Thatcher’s as quick 快的 as I could get there.  He said:

“Why, my boy, you are all out of breath 呼吸.  Did you come for your interest?”

“No, sir 先生,” I says; “is there some for me?”

“Oh, yes, a half 一半的-yearly is in last night—over a hundred 百 and fifty 五十 dollars 美元.   Quite 相当 a for‧tune 命运 for you.  You had better well let me invest 投资 it along 6 with your six 6 thou‧sand 千, because if you take it you’ll spend 用钱；消磨时间 it.”

“No, sir 先生,” I says, “I don’t want to spend it.  I don’t want it at all— nor 也不 the six thou‧sand 千, nuther.  I want you to take it; I want to give it to you—the six 6 thou‧sand 千 and all.”

He looked surprised 使惊奇.  He couldn’t seem to make it out.  He says:

“Why, what can you mean, my boy?”

I says, “Don’t you ask me no questions about it, please 请;讨人喜欢.  You’ll take it— won 赢:win’t you?”

He says:

“Well, I’m puzzled 使迷惑.  Is something the matter?”

“ Please take it,” says I, “and don’t ask me nothing—then I won’t have to tell no lies 躺；说谎.”

He studied a while, and then he says:

“Oho-o!  I think I see.  You want to sell 卖 all your property 特性 to me—not give it.  That’s the correct 正确的 idea 主意.”

Then he wrote write something on a paper 纸；报纸 and read it over, and says:

“There; you see it says ‘for a consideration 考虑.’  That means I have bought 购买 it of you and paid pay you for it.  Here’s a dollar 美元 for you.  Now you sign 符号 it.”

So I signed 符号 it, and left 左边；留下；离开.

Miss Watson’s nigger, Jim, had a hair 头发-ball 球 as big as your fist 拳头, which had been took out of the fourth stomach 胃 of an ox 牛, and he used to do magic 魔法 with it.  He said there was a spirit 精神 inside 里面的 of it, and it knowed every‧thing 每件事物.  So I went to him that night and told tell him pap was here again, for I found find his tracks 小路 in the snow 雪；下雪.  What I wanted to know was, what he was going to do, and was he going to stay 停留?  Jim got get out his hair 头发-ball 球 and said something over it, and then he held hold it up and dropped 放下；滴；掉 it on the floor 地面.  It fell 落下:fall pretty 9 solid 固体的, and only rolled 翻滚；摇晃 about an inch 英寸.  Jim tried it again, and then another time, and it acted just the same.  Jim got get down on his knees 膝, and put his ear 耳朵 against it and listened 倾听.  But it warn’t no use; he said it wouldn’t talk 说话. He said some‧time 有时 it wouldn’t talk without money 钱.  I told tell him I had an old slick 华而不实的 counterfeit 伪造 quarter 四分之一 that warn’t no good because the brass 黄铜 showed show through the silver 银 a little, and it wouldn’t pass 走过 nohow, even if the brass didn’t show, because it was so slick 华而不实的 it felt feel greasy 腻, and so that would tell on it every time.  (I reckoned 估计 I wouldn’t say nothing about the dollar 美元 I got get from the judge 审判.) I said it was pretty 10 bad 7 money 钱, but maybe 也许 the hair 头发-ball 球 would take it, because maybe it wouldn’t know the difference 差别.  Jim smelt 气味；嗅觉:smell it and bit 一点 it and rubbed 擦 it, and said he would manage 使用 so the hair 头发-ball 球 would think it was good.  He said he would split 分裂 open a raw 生的 Irish potato 土豆 and stick 棍；粘贴 the quarter 四分之一 in between and keep it there all night, and next morning 早晨 you couldn’t see no brass 黄铜, and it wouldn’t feel greasy 腻 no more many, and so any‧body 任何人 in town 城镇 would take it in a minute 分, let alone 单独的 a hair 头发-ball 球.  Well, I knowed a potato 土豆 would do that before, but I had forgot 忘记:forget it.

Jim put the quarter 四分之一 under the hair 7- ball, and got get down and listened 倾听 again. This time he said the hair 8- ball was all right.  He said it would tell my whole 全部的 for‧tune 命运 if I wanted it to.  I says, go on.  So the hair 9-ball 7 talked 说话 to Jim, and Jim told tell it to me.  He says:

“Yo’ ole father 父亲 doan’ know yit what he’s a-gwyne to do.   Sometimes 有时 he spec 规范 he’ll go ‘way, en 恩 den 巢穴 agin he spec 规范 he’ll stay 停留.  De bes’ way is to res’ easy 容易的 en 恩 let de ole man take his own way.  Dey’s two angels 天使 hoverin’ roun’ ‘bout 回合 him.  One uv ‘em is white 白色的 en 恩 shiny 闪亮, en 恩 t’other one is black 黑色. De white one gits him to go right a little while, den 巢穴 de black one sail 航行；帆 in en 恩 bust 胸围 it all up.  A body 6 can’t tell yit which one gwyne to fetch 取 him at de las’.  But you is all right.  You gwyne to have considable trouble 麻烦 in yo’ life, en 恩 considable joy 喜悦.   Sometimes 有时 you gwyne to git hurt 损害, en 恩 sometimes you gwyne to git sick 病；恶心; but every time you’s gwyne to git well agin.  Dey’s two gals 加仑 flyin’ ‘bout 回合 you in yo’ life.  One uv ‘em’s light en 恩 t’other one is dark 黑暗的. One is rich 富有的 en 恩 t’other is po’.  You’s gwyne to marry 结婚 de po’ one fust en 恩 de rich one by en 恩 by.  You wants to keep ‘way fum de water as much as you kin 亲属, en 恩 don’t run no resk, ‘kase it’s down in de bills 账单 dat you’s gwyne to git hung 悬挂:hang.”

When I lit light my candle 蜡烛 and went up to my room that night there sat 坐:sit pap his own self 自己!

CHAPTER 章节 V.

I had shut 关闭 the door 门 to.  Then I turned around and there he was.  I used to be scared 惊恐 of him all the time, he tanned 黄褐色 me so much.  I reckoned 估计 I was scared now, too; but in a minute 分 I see I was mistaken 错误—that is, after the first jolt 颠簸, as you may say, when my breath 呼吸 sort 分类 of hitched 拴住, he being 存在 so unexpected 意外; but right away after I see I warn’t scared of him worth 值得的 both‧ring 二者‧戒指；打电话 about.

He was most many fifty 五十, and he looked it.  His hair 10 was long and tangled 纠纷 and greasy 腻, and hung 悬挂:hang down, and you could see his eyes shining 发光 through like he was behind 之后 vines 藤蔓.  It was all black 黑色, no gray 灰色; so was his long, mixed 混合-up whiskers.  There warn’t no color 颜色 in his face, where his face showed show; it was white 白色的; not like another man’s white, but a white to make a body 7 sick 病；恶心, a white to make a body 8’s flesh 肉 crawl 爬行—a tree 树-toad white 6, a fish 鱼-belly 肚皮 white 7.  As for his clothes 衣服，衣物—just rags 抹布, that was all.  He had one ankle 踝 resting 休息，其余 on t’other knee 膝; the boot 靴；鞋 on that foot 脚；英尺 was busted 胸围, and two of his toes 脚趾 stuck 棍；粘贴:stick through, and he worked them now and then.  His hat 帽子 was laying 放置 on the floor 地面—an old black 黑色 slouch with the top 顶 caved 洞穴 in, like a lid 盖子.

I stood stand a-looking at him; he set there a-looking at me, with his chair 椅子 tilted 倾斜 back a little.  I set the candle 蜡烛 down.  I noticed 注意 the window 窗 was up; so he had clumb in by the shed.  He kept keep a-looking me all over.  By and by he says:

“Starchy clothes 6—very.  You think you’re a good deal 很多；对付 of a big-bug 虫；窃听器, don’t you?”

“ Maybe 也许 I am, maybe I ain’t,” I says.

“Don’t you give me none 没有人 o’ your lip 嘴唇,” says he.  "You’ve put on consider‧able 大量 many frills since I been away.  I’ll take you down a peg 衣夹 before I get done with you.  You’re educated 教育, too, they say—can read and write.  You think you’re better well’n your father 父亲, now, don’t you, because he can’t?  I’ll take it out of you.  Who told tell you you might meddle with such hifalut’n foolishness, hey 嘿?—who told tell you you could?”

“The widow.  She told tell me.”

“The widow, hey 嘿?—and who told tell the widow she could put in her shovel 铲 about a thing that ain’t none 没有人 of her business?”

“ Nobody 没有人 never told tell her.”

“Well, I’ll learn 学习 her how to meddle.  And looky here—you drop 放下；滴；掉 that school, you hear?  I’ll learn people to bring up a boy to put on airs 天空 over his own father 父亲 and let on to be better well’n what he is.  You lemme catch 抓；赶上 you fooling 愚人 around that school again, you hear?  Your mother 母亲 couldn’t read, and she couldn’t write, nuther, before she died 死亡.   None 没有人 of the family couldn’t before they died.  I can’t; and here you’re a-swelling 膨胀；增强 your‧self 你自己 up like this.  I ain’t the man to stand it—you hear? Say, lemme hear you read.”

I took up a book 9 and begun begin something about General Washington and the wars. When I’d read about a half 一半的 a minute 分, he fetched 取 the book a whack 重打 with his hand and knocked 敲 it across 穿过 the house.  He says:

“It’s so.  You can do it.  I had my doubts 怀疑 when you told tell me.  Now looky here; you stop 停止 that putting on frills.  I won 赢:win’t have it.  I’ll lay 放置 for you, my smarty; and if I catch 抓；赶上 you about that school I’ll tan 黄褐色 you good. First you know you’ll get religion 宗教, too.  I never see such a son 儿子.”

He took up a little blue 蓝色 and yaller picture 照片 of some cows 奶牛 and a boy, and says:

“What’s this?”

“It’s something they give me for learning 学习 my lessons 教训 good.”

He tore 撕裂；泪:tear it up, and says:

“I’ll give you something better well—I’ll give you a cow‧hide 奶牛‧隐藏.”

He set there a-mumbling 咕哝 and a-growling 吠声 a minute 分, and then he says:

“Ain’t you a sweet 甜的-scented 香味 dandy, though?  A bed 床; and bed‧clothes 床‧衣服，衣物; and a look’n’- glass 玻璃; and a piece 块 of carpet 地毯 on the floor 地面—and your own father 父亲 got get to sleep 睡 with the hogs 豕 in the tan‧yard 黄褐色‧院子.  I never see such a son 儿子.  I bet I’ll take some o’ these frills out o’ you before I’m done with you. Why, there ain’t no end to your airs 天空—they say you’re rich 富有的.  Hey?—how’s that?”

“They lie 躺；说谎—that’s how.”

“Looky here—mind how you talk 6 to me; I’m a-standing about all I can stand now—so don’t gimme no sass.  I’ve been in town 城镇 two days, and I hain’t heard hear nothing but about you bein’ rich 富有的.  I heard hear about it away down the river 河, too.  That’s why I come.  You git me that money 6 to-morrow—I want it.”

“I hain’t got get no money 7.”

“It’s a lie 躺；说谎.   Judge 审判 Thatcher’s got get it.  You git it.  I want it.”

“I hain’t got get no money 8, I tell you.  You ask Judge Thatcher; he’ll tell you the same.”

“All right.  I’ll ask him; and I’ll make him pungle, too, or I’ll know the reason 理由 why.  Say, how much you got get in your pocket 口袋?  I want it.”

“I hain’t got get only a dollar 美元, and I want that to—”

“It don’t make no difference 差别 what you want it for—you just shell 壳 it out.”

He took it and bit 一点 it to see if it was good, and then he said he was going down town 城镇 to get some whisky 威士忌酒; said he hadn’t had a drink 喝（酒） all day. When he had got get out on the shed he put his head in again, and cussed me for putting on frills and trying to be better well than him; and when I reckoned 估计 he was gone he come back and put his head in again, and told tell me to mind about that school, because he was going to lay 放置 for me and lick 舔 me if I didn’t drop 放下；滴；掉 that.

Next day he was drunk 醉的, and he went to Judge 审判 Thatcher’s and bullyragged him, and tried to make him give up the money 9; but he couldn’t, and then he swore 发誓:swear he’d make the law force him.

The judge and the widow went to law to get the court 法院 to take me away from him and let one of them be my guardian 监护人; but it was a new judge 7 that had just come, and he didn’t know the old man; so he said courts 法院 mustn’t interfere 干预 and separate 分开 families if they could help it; said he’d druther not take a child away from its father 6.  So Judge 8 Thatcher and the widow had to quit 放弃 on the business.

That pleased 请;讨人喜欢 the old man till 10 he couldn’t rest 休息，其余.  He said he’d cow‧hide 奶牛‧隐藏 me till 11 I was black 黑色 and blue 蓝色 if I didn’t raise 提升；种 some money for him.  I borrowed 借 three dollars 美元 from Judge 9 Thatcher, and pap took it and got get drunk 醉的, and went a-blowing 吹；殴打 around and cussing and whooping 叫喊 and carrying 运送；支撑 on; and he kept keep it up all over town 6, with a tin 锡 pan 平底锅, till 12 most many mid‧night 午夜; then they jailed 监狱 him, and next day they had him before court 法院, and jailed 监狱 him again for a week.  But he said he was satisfied 使满意; said he was boss 老板 of his son 儿子, and he’d make it warm 暖和的 for him.

When he got get out the new judge 10 said he was a-going to make a man of him. So he took him to his own house, and dressed 衣服 him up clean 清理；清洁的 and nice 美好的, and had him to break‧fast 早餐 and dinner 正餐 and supper 晚饭 with the family, and was just old pie 馅饼 to him, so to speak 讲.  And after supper he talked 说话 to him about temperance and such things till 13 the old man cried 哭，叫喊, and said he’d been a fool 愚人, and fooled 愚人 away his life; but now he was a-going to turn over a new leaf 叶子 and be a man nobody 没有人 wouldn’t be ashamed 惭愧的 of, and he hoped 希望 the judge 11 would help him and not look down on him.  The judge said he could hug 拥抱 him for them words; so he cried 哭，叫喊, and his wife 妻子 she cried again; pap said he’d been a man that had always been misunderstood before, and the judge said he believed 信任 it.  The old man said that what a man wanted that was down was sympathy 同情, and the judge said it was so; so they cried again.  And when it was bed‧time 就寝时间 the old man rose 上升:rise up and held hold out his hand, and says:

“Look at it, gentlemen and ladies 女士 all; take a-hold of it; shake 摇晃 it. There’s a hand that was the hand of a hog 豕; but it ain’t so no more many; it’s the hand of a man that’s started in on a new life, and’ll die 死亡 before he’ll go back.  You mark 斑点；标注 them words—don’t forget 忘记 I said them.  It’s a clean 清理；清洁的 hand now; shake 摇晃 it—don’t be afeard.”

So they shook 摇晃:shake it, one after the other, all around, and cried 6.  The judge’s wife 妻子 she kissed 接吻 it.  Then the old man he signed 符号 a pledge 保证—made his mark 斑点；标注. The judge said it was the holiest time on record 记录, or something like that. Then they tucked 掖 the old man into a beautiful 美丽 room, which was the spare 节省；多余的；备用件 room, and in the night some time he got get powerful 强大 thirsty 渴 and clumb out on to the porch 门廊-roof 屋顶 and slid 滑落:slide down a stanchion and traded 贸易 his new coat 上衣 for a jug 坛子 of forty 四十-rod 杆, and clumb back again and had a good old time; and towards day‧light 日光 he crawled 爬行 out again, drunk 醉的 as a fiddler 小提琴, and rolled 翻滚；摇晃 off the porch 门廊 and broke 破；断:break his left 左边；留下；离开 arm 手臂 in two places, and was most many froze 使结冰；不动:freeze to death 死亡 when some‧body 某人 found find him after sun 太阳-up.  And when they come to look at that spare 节省；多余的；备用件 room they had to take soundings 声音 before they could navigate 导航 it.

The judge he felt feel kind of sore 疼痛的.  He said he reckoned 估计 a body 9 could reform 改革 the old man with a shot‧gun 滑膛枪, maybe 7, but he didn’t know no other way.

CHAPTER 章节 VI.

WELL, pretty 11 soon 11 the old man was up and around again, and then he went for Judge Thatcher in the courts 法院 to make him give up that money, and he went for me, too, for not stopping 停止 school.  He catched 抓；赶上 me a couple 两；双 of times and thrashed 鞭打 me, but I went to school just the same, and dodged 躲闪 him or outrun him most many of the time.  I didn’t want to go to school much before, but I reckoned 估计 I’d go now to spite 恶意 pap.  That law trial 试验；审判 was a slow 慢的 business— appeared 出现 like they warn’t ever 7 going to get started on it; so every now and then I’d borrow 借 two or three dollars 美元 off of the judge for him, to keep from getting a cowhiding.  Every time he got get money he got get drunk 醉的; and every time he got get drunk he raised 提升；种 Cain around town 7; and every time he raised Cain he got get jailed 监狱.  He was just suited 套房—this kind of thing was right in his line.

He got get to hanging 悬挂 around the widow’s too much and so she told tell him at last that if he didn’t quit 放弃 using around there she would make trouble 麻烦 for him. Well, wasn’t he mad 疯狂的?  He said he would show who was Huck Finn’s boss 老板.  So he watched 钟表；注视 out for me one day in the spring 春季, and catched 抓；赶上 me, and took me up the river 河 about three mile 英里 in a skiff, and crossed 穿过；十字 over to the Illinois shore 岸 where it was woody and there warn’t no houses but an old log 记录 hut 小屋 in a place where the timber 木材 was so thick 浓的 you couldn’t find it if you didn’t know where it was.

He kept keep me with him all the time, and I never got get a chance 机会 to run off. We lived in that old cabin 舱, and he always locked 锁 the door 门 and put the key 钥匙 under his head nights.  He had a gun 枪 which he had stole, I reckon 估计, and we fished 鱼 and hunted 打猎, and that was what we lived on.  Every little while he locked 锁 me in and went down to the store 商店, three miles 英里, to the ferry 渡船, and traded 贸易 fish 鱼 and game 游戏 for whisky 威士忌酒, and fetched 取 it home and got get drunk 醉的 and had a good time, and licked 舔 me.  The widow she found find out where I was by and by, and she sent 派遣；送:send a man over to try to get hold of me; but pap drove 驾驶:drive him off with the gun 枪, and it warn’t long after that till I was used to being 存在 where I was, and liked it—all but the cow‧hide 奶牛‧隐藏 part.

It was kind of lazy 懒惰的 and jolly 欢乐, laying 放置 off comfort‧able 舒服；自在 all day, smoking 烟 and fishing 鱼, and no books 8 nor 也不 study.  Two months 月 or more many run along 7, and my clothes 7 got get to be all rags 抹布 and dirt 泥土, and I didn’t see how I’d ever 8 got get to like it so well at the widow’s, where you had to wash 洗, and eat 吃 on a plate 盘子, and comb 梳子 up, and go to bed 床 and get up regular 有规律的, and be for‧ever 永远 bothering 烦 over a book, and have old Miss Watson pecking 啄 at you all the time.  I didn’t want to go back no more many.  I had stopped 停止 cussing, because the widow didn’t like it; but now I took to it again because pap hadn’t no objections 反对.  It was pretty good times up in the woods 9 there, take it all around.

But by and by pap got get too handy 便利 with his hick’ry, and I couldn’t stand it. I was all over welts.  He got get to going away so much, too, and locking 锁 me in.  Once he locked 锁 me in and was gone three days.  It was dreadful 可怕 lone‧some 孤单‧一些.  I judged 审判 he had got get drownded, and I wasn’t ever 9 going to get out any more many.  I was scared 6.  I made up my mind I would fix 固定 up some way to leave there.  I had tried to get out of that cabin 舱 many a time, but I couldn’t find no way.  There warn’t a window 窗 to it big enough for a dog 狗 to get through.  I couldn’t get up the chimbly; it was too narrow 狭窄的.  The door 门 was thick 浓的, solid 固体的 oak 橡木 slabs 板.  Pap was pretty careful 小心 not to leave a knife 刀 or anything in the cabin 舱 when he was away; I reckon 估计 I had hunted 打猎 the place over as much as a hundred 百 times; well, I was most many all the time at it, because it was about the only way to put in the time.  But this time I found find something at last; I found find an old rusty 生疏 wood 木材；树林-saw see without any handle 操纵; it was laid 放置:lay in between a rafter 筏 and the clapboards of theroof 屋顶. I greased 油脂 it up and went to work.  There was an old horse 马-blanket 毯 nailed 钉子 against the logs 记录 at the far end of the cabin 舱 behind 之后 the table 桌；表, to keep the wind 风 fromblowing 吹；殴打 through the chinks and putting the candle 蜡烛 out.  I got get under the table and raised 提升；种 the blanket 毯, and went to work to saw see a section 部分 of the big bottom 底部 log 记录 out—big enough to let me through.  Well, it was a good long job, but I was getting towards the end of it when I heard hear pap’s gun 枪 in the woods.  I got get rid 使摆脱 of the signs 符号 of my work, and dropped 放下；滴；掉 the blanket 毯 and hid 隐藏:hide my saw see, and pretty soon pap come in.

Pap warn’t in a good humor 幽默—so he was his natural 自然 self 自己.  He said he was down town 8, and everything 7 was going wrong 有毛病的.  His lawyer 律师 said he reckoned 估计 he would win 赢 his law‧suit 诉讼 and get the money if they ever got get started on the trial 试验；审判; but then there was ways to put it off a long time, and Judge Thatcher knowed how to do it. And he said people allowed 允许 there’d be another trial to get me away from him and give me to the widow for my guardian 监护人, and they guessed 推测 it would win this time.  This shook 摇晃:shake me up consider‧able 大量, because I didn’t want to go back to the widow’s any more many and be so cramped 抽筋 up and sivilized, as they called it.  Then the old man got get to cussing, and cussed everything 8 and every‧body 每人 he could think of, and then cussed them all over again to make sure 确信的 he hadn’t skipped 跳跃 any, and after that he polished 擦光 off with a kind of a general cuss all round 圆形的；围绕, including 包括 a consider‧able 大量 parcel 包袱 of people which he didn’t know the names of, and so called them what’s-his-name when he got get to them, and went right along 8 with his cussing.

He said he would like to see the widow get me.  He said he would watch 钟表；注视 out, and if they tried to come any such game 游戏 on him he knowed of a place six 7 or seven 七 mile 英里 off to stow me in, where they might hunt 打猎 till they dropped 放下；滴；掉 and they couldn’t find me.  That made me pretty uneasy 不安 again, but only for a minute 6; I reckoned 估计 I wouldn’t stay 停留 on hand till he got get that chance 机会.

The old man made me go to the skiff and fetch 取 the things he had got get. There was a fifty 五十-pound 敲打；英镑 sack 解雇 of corn 玉米 meal 餐, and a side of bacon 培根, ammunition 弹药, and a four-gallon 加仑 jug 坛子 of whisky 威士忌酒, and an old book and two news‧paper 报纸 for wadding, besides 而且 some tow 拖.  I toted up a load 负荷, and went back and set down on the bow 弓 of the skiff to rest 休息，其余.  I thought think it all over, and I reckoned 估计 I would walk 走；步行同道 off with the gun 枪 and some lines, and take to the woods when I run away.  I guessed 推测 I wouldn’t stay 停留 in one place, but just tramp 流浪汉 right across 穿过 the country, mostly night times, and hunt 打猎 and fish 鱼 to keep alive 活的；有生命的, and so get so far away that the old man nor 也不 the widow couldn’t ever find me any more many.  I judged 审判 I would saw see out and leave that night if pap got get drunk 7 enough, and I reckoned 估计 he would.  I got get so full 满的 of it I didn’t notice 注意 how long I was staying 停留 till the old man hollered and asked me whether 是否 I was asleep 睡着的 or drownded.

I got get the things all up to the cabin 舱, and then it was about dark 黑暗的.  While I was cooking 烹调 supper 晚饭 the old man took a swig or two and got get sort 分类 of warmed 暖和的 up, and went to ripping 安息 again.  He had been drunk 8 over in town 9, and laid 放置:lay in the gutter 排水沟 all night, and he was a sight 视力 to look at.  A body would a thought think he was Adam—he was just all mud 泥.   Whenever 随时 his liquor 酒 begun begin to work he most many always went for the govment, this time he says:

“Call this a govment! why, just look at it and see what it’s like. Here’s the law a-standing ready 准备好的 to take a man’s son 儿子 away from him—a man’s own son, which he has had all the trouble 麻烦 and all the anxiety 焦虑 and all the expense 费用 of raising 提升；种.  Yes, just as that man has got get that son raised 提升；种 at last, and ready 准备好的 to go to work and begin to do suthin’ for him and give him a rest 休息，其余, the law up and goes for him.  And they call that govment!  That ain’t all, nuther.  The law backs that old Judge Thatcher up and helps him to keep me out o’ my property 特性.  Here’s what the law does:  The law takes a man worth 值得的 six 8 thou‧sand 千 dollars 美元 and up’ards, and jams 果酱 him into an old trap 陷阱；诱骗 of a cabin 舱 like this, and lets him go round 圆形的；围绕 in clothes 8 that ain’t fitten for a hog 豕. They call that govment!  A man can’t get his rights in a govment like this. Sometimes 6 I’ve a mighty 威武 notion 概念 to just leave the country for good and all. Yes, and I told tell ‘em so; I told tell old Thatcher so to his face.  Lots of ‘em heard hear me, and can tell what I said.  Says I, for two cents 分 I’d leave the blamed 指责 country and never come a-near it agin.  Them’s the very words.  I says look at my hat 帽子—if you call it a hat—but the lid 盖子 raises 提升；种 up and the rest 6 of it goes down till it’s below 在下面 my chin 下巴, and then it ain’t rightly a hat at all, but more many like my head was shoved 推 up through a jint o’ stove 炉- pipe 管子.  Look at it, says I—such a hat for me to wear 穿着—one of the wealthiest men in this town if I could git my rights.

“Oh, yes, this is a wonderful 精彩 govment, wonderful 精彩.  Why, looky here. There was a free 自由的 nigger there from Ohio—a mulatter, most many as white 8 as a white 9 man.  He had the whitest 白色的 shirt 衬衫 on you ever see, too, and the shiniest hat 帽子; and there ain’t a man in that town that’s got get as fine 好的 clothes 9 as what he had; and he had a gold 金 watch 钟表；注视 and chain 链子, and a silver 银-headed cane 甘蔗—the awfulest 糟糕的 old gray 灰色-headed nabob in the State.  And what do you think?  They said he was a p’fessor in a college 大学, and could talk 7 all kinds of languages 语言, and knowed everything 9.  And that ain’t the wust. They said he could vote 投票 when he was at home.  Well, that let me out. Thinks I, what is the country a-coming to?  It was ‘lection day, and I was just about to go and vote myself 我 if I warn’t too drunk 9 to get there; but when they told tell me there was a State in this country where they’d let that nigger vote, I drawed 绘画 out.  I says I’ll never vote agin.  Them’s the very words I said; they all heard hear me; and the country may rot 腐烂 for all me—I’ll never vote agin as long as I live.  And to see the cool 冷静的；酷 way of that nigger—why, he wouldn’t a give me the road 路 if I hadn’t shoved 推 him out o’ the way.  I says to the people, why ain’t this nigger put up at auction 拍卖 and sold 卖:sell?—that’s what I want to know.  And what do you reckon 估计 they said? Why, they said he couldn’t be sold till he’d been in the State six 9 months 月, and he hadn’t been there that long yet.  There, now—that’s a specimen 标本.  They call that a govment that can’t sell 卖 a free 自由的 nigger till he’s been in the State six months.  Here’s a govment that calls itself 本身 a govment, and lets on to be a govment, and thinks it is a govment, and yet’s got get to set stock 股份-still for six whole 全部的 months before it can take a hold of a prowling, thieving, infernal, white-shirted 衬衫 free 自由的 nigger, and—”

Pap was agoing 以前 on so he never noticed 注意 where his old limber 肢 legs 腿 was taking him to, so he went head over heels 脚跟 over the tub 桶 of salt 盐 pork 猪肉 and barked 吠 both shins, and the rest 7 of his speech 演说 was all the hottest 热的 kind of language 语言—mostly hove at the nigger and the govment, though he give the tub 桶 some, too, all along 9, here and there.  He hopped 跳 around the cabin 舱 consider‧able 大量, first on one leg 腿 and then on the other, holding first one shin and then the other one, and at last he let out with his left 左边；留下；离开 foot 脚；英尺 all of a sudden 突然的 and fetched 取 the tub 桶 a rattling 霸王鞭 kick 踢.  But it warn’t good judgment 判断, because that was the boot 靴；鞋 that had a couple 两；双 of his toes 脚趾 leaking 泄漏 out of the front 前面 end of it; so now he raised 提升；种 a howl 嗥 that fairly 公正地，一定地 made a body’s hair 11 raise 提升；种, and down he went in the dirt 泥土, and rolled 翻滚；摇晃 there, and held hold his toes 脚趾; and the cussing he done then laid 放置:lay over anything he had ever done previous 以前.  He said so his own self 自己 after‧ward 之后.  He had heard hear old Sowberry Hagan in his best 最好 days, and he said it laid over him, too; but I reckon 估计 that was sort 分类 of piling 堆 it on, maybe 8.

After supper 晚饭 pap took the jug 坛子, and said he had enough whisky 威士忌酒 there for two drunks 醉的 and one delirium tremens.  That was always his word.  I judged 6 he would be blind 失明的 drunk 10 in about an hour 小时, and then I would steal the key 钥匙, or saw see myself 我 out, one or t’other.  He drank 喝（酒）:drink and drank, and tumbled 下跌 down on his blankets 毯 by and by; but luck 运气 didn’t run my way.  He didn’t go sound 声音 asleep 睡着的, but was uneasy 不安.  He groaned 呻吟 and moaned 呻吟 and thrashed 鞭打 around this way and that for a long time.  At last I got get so sleepy 困 I couldn’t keep my eyes open all I could do, and so before I knowed what I was about I was sound asleep, and the candle 蜡烛 burning 烧.

I don’t know how long I was asleep, but all of a sudden 突然的 there was an awful 糟糕的 scream 叫喊 and I was up.  There was pap looking wild 野生的, and skipping 跳跃 around every which way and yelling 叫喊 about snakes 蛇.  He said they was crawling 爬行 up his legs 腿; and then he would give a jump 跳 and scream, and say one had bit 一点 him on the cheek 脸颊—but I couldn’t see no snakes.  He started and run round 圆形的；围绕 and round the cabin 舱, hollering “Take him off! take him off! he’s biting 咬 me on the neck 颈!”  I never see a man look so wild 野生的 in the eyes. Pretty soon he was all fagged out, and fell 落下:fall down panting 喘气; then he rolled 翻滚；摇晃 over and over wonderful 精彩 fast 快的, kicking 踢 things every which way, and striking 敲击 and grabbing 用手抓 at the air 天空 with his hands, and screaming 叫喊 and saying there was devils 魔鬼 a-hold of him.  He wore 穿着:wear out by and by, and laid 放置:lay still a while, moaning 呻吟.  Then he laid 7 stiller, and didn’t make a sound 声音.  I could hear the owls 猫头鹰 and the wolves away off in the woods, and it seemed terrible 可怕的 still.  He was laying 放置 over by the corner 角落. By and by he raised 提升；种 up part way and listened 倾听, with his head to one side.  He says, very low 低的:

“Tramp—tramp 流浪汉—tramp 流浪汉; that’s the dead 死去的; tramp 流浪汉—tramp 流浪汉—tramp 流浪汉; they’re coming after me; but I won 赢:win’t go.  Oh, they’re here! don’t touch 触摸 me—don’t! hands off—they’re cold 寒冷的; let go.  Oh, let a poor 贫穷的 devil 魔鬼 alone 单独的!”

Then he went down on all fours and crawled 爬行 off, begging 乞讨 them to let him alone, and he rolled 翻滚；摇晃 him‧self 他自己 up in his blanket 毯 and wallowed in under the old pine 松树 table 6, still a- begging; and then he went to crying 哭，叫喊.  I could hear him through the blanket 毯.

By and by he rolled out and jumped 跳 up on his feet looking wild 野生的, and he see me and went for me.  He chased 追 me round 圆形的；围绕 and round 7 the place with a clasp 钩- knife 刀, calling me the Angel of Death 死亡, and saying he would kill 11 me, and then I couldn’t come for him no more many.  I begged 乞讨, and told tell him I was only Huck; but he laughed 笑 such a screechy laugh 笑, and roared 咆哮 and cussed, and kept keep on chasing 追 me up.  Once when I turned short 短的 and dodged 躲闪 under his arm 手臂 he made a grab 用手抓 and got get me by the jacket 衣服 between my shoulders 肩膀, and I thought think I was gone; but I slid 滑落:slide out of the jacket quick 快的 as lightning 闪电, and saved 节省 myself 我. Pretty soon he was all tired 使…疲惫 out, and dropped 放下；滴；掉 down with his back against the door 门, and said he would rest 8 a minute 7 and then kill me. He put his knife 刀 under him, and said he would sleep 睡 and get strong 强的, and then he would see who was who.

So he dozed off pretty soon.  By and by I got get the old split 分裂- bottom 底部 chair 椅子 and clumb up as easy 容易的 as I could, not to make any noise 噪音, and got get down the gun 枪.  I slipped 滑 the ramrod down it to make sure 确信的 it was loaded 负荷, then I laid 8 it across 穿过 the turnip barrel 桶, pointing towards pap, and set down behind 之后 it to wait 等候 for him to stir 搅动.  And how slow 慢的 and still the time did drag 拖拽 along.
