CHAPTER 章节 XXXII.

I went around and clumb over the back stile by the ash 灰-hopper 跳, and started for the kitchen 厨房.  When I got get a little ways I heard hear the dim 暗淡 hum 哼 of a spinning 旋转；纺纱-wheel 轮子 wailing 哀号 along 一起 up and sinking 淹没 along down again; and then I knowed for certain I wished 希望 I was dead 死去的—for that is the lonesomest sound 声音 in the whole 全部的 world.

I went right along, not fixing 固定 up any particular 特别的 plan, but just trusting 信任 to Providence to put the right words in my mouth 口 when the time come; for I’d noticed 注意 that Providence always did put the right words in my mouth if I left 左边；留下；离开 it alone 单独的.

“It’s you, at last!—ain’t it?”

I out with a “Yes’m” before I thought think.

She grabbed 用手抓 me and hugged 拥抱 me tight 紧的; and then gripped 握 me by both hands and shook 摇晃:shake and shook; and the tears 撕裂；泪 come in her eyes, and run down over; and she couldn’t seem to hug 拥抱 and shake 摇晃 enough, and kept keep saying, “You don’t look as much like your mother 母亲 as I reckoned 估计 you would; but law sakes 缘故, I don’t care 关心 for that, I’m so glad 高兴的 to see you!   Dear 亲爱的, dear, it does seem like I could eat 吃 you up!  Children, it’s your cousin 堂兄妹 Tom!—tell him howdy.”

But they ducked 鸭子 their heads, and put their fingers 手指 in their mouths 口, and hid 隐藏:hide behind 之后 her.  So she run on:

“Lize, hurry 赶紧 up and get him a hot 热的 break‧fast 早餐 right away—or did you get your breakfast on the boat 小船?”

I didn’t rightly know what to say, because I didn’t know whether 是否 the boat would be coming up the river 河 or down.  But I go a good deal 很多；对付 on instinct 直觉; and my instinct 直觉 said she would be coming up—from down towards Orleans. “No’m.  Killed a nigger.”

“Well, it’s lucky 幸运; because some‧time 有时 people do get hurt.  Two years ago 以前 last Christmas 圣诞节 your uncle 叔叔 Silas was coming up from Newrleans on the old Lally Rook, and she blowed 吹；殴打 out a cylinder 圆筒-head and crippled 削弱 a man.  And I think he died 死亡 after‧ward 之后.  He was a Baptist.  Your uncle Silas knowed a family in Baton Rouge that knowed his people very well.  Yes, I remember 记得 now, he did die 死亡.  Mortification set in, and they had to amputate him. “No, I didn’t see nobody 没有人, Aunt 阿姨 Sally.  The boat 小船 landed 陆地；着陆 just at day‧light 日光, and I left 左边；留下；离开 my baggage 行李 on the wharf- boat and went looking around the town 城镇 and out a piece 块 in the country, to put in the time and not get here too soon 立刻; and so I come down the back way.”

“Who’d you give the baggage to?”

“ Nobody 没有人.”

“Why, child, it ‘ll be stole!”

“Not where I hid 隐藏:hide it I reckon 估计 it won 赢:win’t,” I says.

“How’d you get your break‧fast 早餐 so early on the boat 小船?”

It was kinder thin 薄的 ice 冰, but I says:

“The captain 船长 see me standing around, and told tell me I better well have something to eat 吃 before I went ashore 岸上; so he took me in the texas to the officers 军官；指挥官’ lunch 午餐, and give me all I wanted.”

I was getting so uneasy 不安 I couldn’t listen 倾听 good.  I had my mind on the children all the time; I wanted to get them out to one side and pump 泵 them a little, and find out who I was.  But I couldn’t get no show, Mrs. Phelps kept keep it up and run on so.   Pretty 漂亮的 soon 立刻 she made the cold 寒冷的 chills 寒意 streak 条纹 all down my back, because she says:

“Here he comes!   Stick 棍；粘贴 your head down lower 低的—there, that’ll do; you can’t be seen see now.  Don’t you let on you’re here.  I’ll play a joke 笑话 on him. Children, don’t you say a word.”

I see I was in a fix 固定 now.  But it warn 警告’t no use to worry 烦恼; there warn’t nothing to do but just hold still, and try and be ready 准备好的 to stand from under when the lightning 闪电 struck 敲击:strike.

I had just one little glimpse 一瞥 of the old gentle‧man 先生 when he come in; then the bed 床 hid 隐藏:hide him.  Mrs. Phelps she jumps 跳 for him, and says:

“Has he come?”

“No,” says her husband 丈夫.

“Good-ness gracious 亲切!” she says, “what in the warld can have become of him?”

“I can’t imagine 想象,” says the old gentle‧man 先生; “and I must say it makes me dreadful 可怕 uneasy 不安.”

“Uneasy!” she says; “I’m ready 准备好的 to go distracted 转移!  He must a come; and you’ve missed 错过；想念 him along 一起 the road 路.  I know it’s so—something tells me so.”

“Why, Sally, I couldn’t miss 错过；想念 him along the road—you know that.”

“But oh, dear 亲爱的, dear, what will Sis say!  He must a come!  You must a missed 错过；想念 him.  He—”

“ Oh, don’t distress 苦难 me any more many’n I’m already 早已；已经 distressed 苦难.  I don’t know what in the world to make of it.  I’m at my wit 风趣’s end, and I don’t mind acknowledging 确认 ‘t I’m right down scared 惊恐.  But there’s no hope 希望 that he’s come; for he couldn’t come and me miss 错过；想念 him.  Sally, it’s terrible 可怕的—just terrible—something’s happened 发生 to the boat 7, sure 确信的!”

“Why, Silas!  Look yonder!—up the road 路!—ain’t that some‧body 某人 coming?”

He sprung to the window 窗 at the head of the bed 床, and that give Mrs. Phelps the chance 机会 she wanted.  She stooped 哈腰 down quick 快的 at the foot 脚；英尺 of the bed and give me a pull 拉, and out I come; and when he turned back from the window 窗 there she stood stand, a-beaming 梁 and a- smiling 微笑 like a house afire, and I standing pretty 漂亮的 meek and sweaty 出汗 along‧side 并肩.  The old gentle‧man 先生 stared 盯着看，凝视，注视, and says:

“Why, who’s that?”

“It’s Tom Sawyer!”

Now I was feeling pretty 漂亮的 comfort‧able 舒服；自在 all down one side, and pretty uncomfortable 不舒服 all up the other.   Being 存在 Tom Sawyer was easy 容易的 and comfort‧able 舒服；自在, and it stayed 停留 easy and comfort‧able 舒服；自在 till 到 by and by I hear a steam‧boat 蒸汽‧小船 coughing 咳嗽 along 6 down the river 河.  Then I says to myself 我, s’ pose 以…身份出现，造成 Tom Sawyer comes down on that boat 8?  And s’ pose he steps 步；走 in here any minute 分, and sings 唱 out my name before I can throw 投掷 him a wink 眨眼 to keep quiet 清静的?

Well, I couldn’t have it that way; it wouldn’t do at all.  I must go up the road 路 and waylay him.  So I told tell the folks 民间 I reckoned 估计 I would go up to the town 城镇 and fetch 取 down my baggage 行李.  The old gentle‧man 先生 was for going along 7 with me, but I said no, I could drive 驾驶 thehorse 马 myself 我, and I druther he wouldn’t take no trouble 麻烦 about me.

CHAPTER 章节 XXXIII.

SO I started for town 城镇 in the wagon 车皮, and when I was half 一半的-way I see a wagon 车皮 coming, and sure 确信的 enough it was Tom Sawyer, and I stopped 停止 and waited 等候 till 到 he come along 8.  I says “Hold on!” and it stopped along‧side 并肩, and his mouth 口 opened up like a trunk 树干, and stayed 停留 so; and he swallowed 吞 two or three times like a person that’s got get a dry 干燥 throat 咽喉, and then says:

“I hain’t ever 永远；曾经 done you no harm 损害.  You know that.  So, then, what you want to come back and ha’nt me for?”

I says:

“I hain’t come back—I hain’t been gone.”

When he heard hear my voice 嗓音 it righted him up some, but he warn 警告’t quite 相当 satisfied 使满意 yet.  He says:

“Don’t you play nothing on me, because I wouldn’t on you.   Honest 诚实的 injun now, you ain’t a ghost 鬼?”

“ Honest injun, I ain’t,” I says.

“Well—I—I—well, that ought 应当 to settle 解决；定居 it, of course; but I can’t some‧how 某种方法 seem to under‧stand 懂 it no way.  Looky here, warn 警告’t you ever 永远；曾经 murdered 谋杀 at all?”

“It’s all right; I’ve got get it.  Take my trunk 树干 in your wagon 车皮, and let on it’s your’n; and you turn back and fool 愚人 along 9 slow 慢的, so as to get to the house about the time you ought 应当 to; and I’ll go towards town 城镇 a piece 块, and take a fresh 新鲜的 start, and get there a quarter 四分之一 or a half 一半的 an hour 小时 after you; and you needn’t let on to know me at first.”

I says:

“All right; but wait 等候 a minute 分.  There’s one more many thing—a thing that nobody 没有人 don’t know but me.  And that is, there’s a nigger here that I’m a-trying to steal out of slavery 奴隶制度, and his name is Jim—old Miss 错过；想念 Watson’s Jim.”

He says:

“What!  Why, Jim is—”

It’s wonderful 精彩.  Why, I wouldn’t take a hundred 百 dollars 美元 for thathorse 马 now—I wouldn’t, honest 诚实的; and yet I’d a sold 卖:sell her for fifteen 十五 before, and thought think ‘twas all she was worth 值得的.”

That’s all he said.  He was the innocentest 无辜, best 最好 old soul 灵魂 I ever 6 see. Well, he run on, and on, and on, making up stuff 塞满；材料 about Hicksville and every‧body 每人 in it he could invent 发明, and I getting a little nervious, and wondering 琢磨；奇妙 how this was going to help me out of my scrape 擦; and at last, still talking 说话 along, he reached 到达 over and kissed 接吻 Aunt 阿姨 Sally right on the mouth 口, and then settled 解决；定居 back again in his chair 椅子 comfort‧able 舒服；自在, and was going on talking 说话; but she jumped 跳 up and wiped 擦 it off with the back of her hand, and says:

“You owdacious puppy 小狗!”

He looked kind of hurt 损害, and says:

“I’m surprised 使惊奇 at you, m’am.”

“You’re s’rp—Why, what do you reckon 估计 I am?  I’ve a good notion 概念 to take and—Say, what do you mean by kissing 接吻 me?”

He looked kind of humble 谦逊的, and says:

“I didn’t mean nothing, m’am.  I didn’t mean no harm 损害.  I—I—thought think you’d like it.”

“Why, you born 生；熊:bear fool 愚人!”  She took up the spinning 旋转；纺纱stick 棍；粘贴, and it looked like it was all she could do to keep from giving him a crack 破裂 with it.  "What made you think I’d like it?”

“Well, I don’t know.  Only, they—they—told tell me you would.”

“They told tell you I would.   Whoever 无论谁 told tell you’s another lunatic 疯子.  I never heard hear the beat 打败 of it.  Who’s they?”

“Why, every‧body 每人.  They all said so, m’am.”

It was all she could do to hold in; and her eyes snapped 卡, and her fingers 手指 worked like she wanted to scratch 刮 him; and she says:

“Who’s ‘ everybody’?  Out with their names, or ther’ll be an idiot 白痴 short 短的.”

He got get up and looked distressed 苦难, and fumbled 摸索 his hat 帽子, and says:

“I’m sorry 对不起的, and I warn 13’t expecting it.  They told tell me to.  They all told tell me to.  They all said, kiss 接吻 her; and said she’d like it.  They all said it—every one of them.  But I’m sorry, m’am, and I won 赢:win’t do it no more many—I won’t, honest 诚实的.”

“You won’t, won’t you?  Well, I sh’d reckon 估计 you won’t!”

“No’m, I’m honest about it; I won 7’t ever 8 do it again— till 到 you ask me.”

“ Till I ask you!  Well, I never see the beat 打败 of it in my born 生；熊:bear days!  I lay 放置 you’ll be the Methusalem-numskull of creation 创建 before ever 9 I ask you—or the likes of you.”

“Well,” he says, “it does surprise 使惊奇 me so.  I can’t make it out, some‧how 某种方法. They said you would, and I thought think you would.  But—” He stopped 停止 and looked around slow 慢的, like he wished 希望 he could run across 穿过 a friendly 友好的 eye some‧where 某处, and fetched 取 up on the old gentle‧man 先生’s, and says, “Didn’t you think she’d like me to kiss 接吻 her, sir 先生?”

“Why, no; I—I—well, no, I b’lieve I didn’t.”

Then he looks on around the same way to me, and says:

“Tom, didn’t you think Aunt 阿姨 Sally ‘d open out her arms 手臂 and say, ‘Sid Sawyer—‘”

“My land 陆地；着陆!” she says, breaking 破；断 in and jumping 跳 for him, “you impudent young rascal, to fool 愚人 a body 身体 so—” and was going to hug 拥抱 him, but he fended 挡开 her off, and says:

“No, not till 到 you’ve asked me first.”

So she didn’t lose 失去 no time, but asked him; and hugged 拥抱 him and kissed 接吻 him over and over again, and then turned him over to the old man, and he took what was left 左边；留下；离开.  And after they got get a little quiet 清静的 again she says:

“Why, dear 亲爱的 me, I never see such a surprise 使惊奇.  We warn’t looking for you at all, but only Tom.  Sis never wrote write to me about any‧body 任何人 coming but him.”

“It’s because it warn’t intended 意欲 for any of us to come but Tom,” he says; “but I begged 乞讨 and begged, and at the last minute 分 she let me come, too; so, coming down the river 河, me and Tom thought think it would be a first-rate 速度 surprise 使惊奇 for him to come here to the house first, and for me to by and by tag 标签 along and drop 放下；滴；掉 in, and let on to be a stranger 奇怪；陌生.  But it was a mistake 错误, Aunt 阿姨 Sally.  This ain’t no healthy 健康 place for a stranger to come.”

“No—not impudent whelps, Sid.  You ought 应当 to had your jaws 下巴 boxed 盒；耳光; I hain’t been so put out since I don’t know when.  But I don’t care 关心, I don’t mind the terms 学期—I’d be willing to stand a thou‧sand 千 such jokes 笑话 to have you here. Well, to think of that performance 表演!  I don’t deny 拒绝 it, I was most many putrified with astonishment 惊愕 when you give me that smack 拍击.”

We had dinner 正餐 out in that broad 宽阔的 open pass‧age 通道 betwixt the house and the kitchen 厨房; and there was things enough on that table 桌；表 for seven 七 families—and all hot 热的, too; none 没有人 of your flabby, tough 坚强的 meat 肉 that’s laid 放置:lay in a cup‧board 橱柜 in a damp 微湿的 cellar 地窖 all night and tastes 品尝 like a hunk of old cold 寒冷的 cannibal in the morning 早晨.   Uncle 叔叔 Silas he asked a pretty 漂亮的 long blessing 祝福 over it, but it was worth 值得的 it; and it didn’t cool 冷静的；酷 it a bit 一点, neither 都不, the way I’ve seen see them kind of interruptions 中断 do lots 大量；份额 of times.  There was a consider‧able 大量 good deal 很多；对付 of talk 说话 all the after‧noon 下午, and me and Tom was on the look‧out 小心 all the time; but it warn’t no use, they didn’t happen 发生 to say nothing about any run‧away 逃跑 nigger, and we was afraid 害怕的 to try to work up to it.  But at supper 晚饭, at night, one of the little boys says:

“Pa, mayn’t Tom and Sid and me go to the show?”

“No,” says the old man, “I reckon 估计 there ain’t going to be any; and you couldn’t go if there was; because the run‧away 逃跑 nigger told tell Burton and me all about that scandalous show, and Burton said he would tell the people; so I reckon 估计 they’ve drove 驾驶:drive the owdacious loafers out of town 城镇 before this time.”

So there it was!—but I couldn’t help it.  Tom and me was to sleep 睡 in the same room and bed 床; so, being 存在 tired 使…疲惫, we bid 出价 good-night and went up to bed right after supper 晚饭, and clumb out of the window 窗 and down the lightning 闪电-rod 杆, and shoved 推 for the town 6; for I didn’t believe 信任 any‧body 任何人 was going to give the king 国王 and the duke 公爵 a hint 暗示, and so if I didn’t hurry 赶紧 up and give them one they’d get into trouble 麻烦 sure 确信的.

On the road 6 Tom he told tell me all about how it was reckoned 估计 I was murdered 谋杀, and how pap disappeared 不见 pretty 漂亮的 soon 立刻, and didn’t come back no more many, and what a stir 搅动 there was when Jim run away; and I told tell Tom all about our Royal 王国的 Nonesuch rapscallions, and as much of the raft 筏 voyage 旅行 as I had time to; and as we struck 敲击:strike into the town 7 and up through the the middle 中部 of it--it was as much as half 一半的-after eight 八, then—here comes a raging 愤怒 rush 仓促 of people with torches 火炬, and an awful 糟糕的 whooping 叫喊 and yelling 叫喊, and banging 砰 tin 锡 pans 平底锅 and blowing 吹；殴打 horns 角；喇叭; and we jumped 跳 to one side to let them go by; and as they went by I see they had the king 国王 and the duke 公爵 astraddle of a rail 围栏；钢轨—that is, I knowed it was the king and the duke 公爵, though they was all over tar 柏油 and feathers 羽毛, and didn’t look like nothing in the world that was human 人—just looked like a couple 两；双 of monstrous 滔天 big soldier 士兵-plumes 羽.  Well, it made me sick 病；恶心 to see it; and I was sorry 对不起的 for them poor 贫穷的 pitiful rascals, it seemed like I couldn’t ever feel any hardness against them any more many in the world.  It was a dreadful 可怕 thing to see.   Human 人 beings 蜜蜂 can be awful 糟糕的 cruel 残酷的 to one another.

We see we was too late—couldn’t do no good.  We asked some stragglers about it, and they said every‧body 每人 went to the show looking very innocent 无辜; and laid 放置:lay low 低的 and kept keep dark 黑暗的 till 到 the poor 贫穷的 old king 国王 was in the middle 中部 of his cavortings on the stage 阶段; then some‧body 某人 give a signal 信号, and the house rose 上升:rise up and went for them.

So we poked 戳 along back home, and I warn’t feeling so brash as I was before, but kind of ornery, and humble 谦逊的, and to blame 指责, some‧how 某种方法—though I hadn’t done nothing.  But that’s always the way; it don’t make no difference 差别 whether 是否 you do right or wrong 有毛病的, a person’s conscience 良心 ain’t got get no sense, and just goes for him anyway 无论如何.  If I had a yaller dog 狗 that didn’t know no more many than a person’s conscience does I would pison him. It takes up more many room than all the rest 休息，其余 of a person’s insides 里面的, and yet ain’t no good, nohow.  Tom Sawyer he says the same.

CHAPTER 章节 XXXIV.

WE stopped 6 talking 说话, and got get to thinking.  By and by Tom says:

“Looky here, Huck, what fools 愚人 we are to not think of it before!  I bet I know where Jim is.”

“No!  Where?”

“In that hut 小屋 down by the ash 灰-hopper 跳.  Why, looky here.  When we was at dinner 正餐, didn’t you see a nigger man go in there with some vittles?”

“Yes.”

“What did you think the vittles was for?”

“For a dog 狗.”

“So ‘d I. Well, it wasn’t for a dog.”

“Why?”

“Because part of it was water‧melon 水‧瓜.”

“So it was—I noticed 注意 it.  Well, it does beat 打败 all that I never thought think about a dog not eating 吃 water‧melon 水‧瓜.  It shows how a body 身体 can see and don’t see at the same time.”

“Well, the nigger unlocked 开锁 the pad‧lock 垫‧锁 when he went in, and he locked 锁 it again when he came out.  He fetched 取 uncle 叔叔 a key 钥匙 about the time we got get up from table 桌；表—same key, I bet.  Watermelon shows man, lock 锁 shows prisoner 犯人，囚犯; and it ain’t likely 可能的 there’s two prisoners 犯人，囚犯 on such a little plantation 种植园, and where the people’s all so kind and good.  Jim’s the prisoner.  All right—I’m glad 高兴的 we found find it out detective 侦探 fashion 时尚; I wouldn’t give shucks for any other way.  Now you work your mind, and study out a plan to steal Jim, and I will study out one, too; and we’ll take the one we like the best 最好.”

What a head for just a boy to have!  If I had Tom Sawyer’s head I wouldn’t trade 贸易 it off to be a duke 公爵, nor 也不 mate 伴，友 of a steam‧boat 蒸汽‧小船, nor clown 小丑 in a circus 马戏团, nor nothing I can think of.  I went to thinking out a plan, but only just to be doing something; I knowed very well where the right plan was going to come from.  Pretty 7 soon 立刻 Tom says:

“ Ready 准备好的?”

“Yes,” I says.

“All right—bring it out.”

“My plan is this,” I says.  "We can easy 容易的 find out if it’s Jim in there. Then get up my canoe 独木舟 to-morrow night, and fetch 取 my raft 筏 over from the island 岛.  Then the first dark 黑暗的 night that comes steal the key 钥匙 out of the old man’s britches after he goes to bed 床, and shove 推 off down the river 河 on the raft 筏 with Jim, hiding 隐藏 day‧time 白天 and running nights, the way me and Jim used to do before.  Wouldn’t that plan work?”

“Work?  Why, cert’nly it would work, like rats 鼠 a-fighting 战斗.  But it’s too blame 指责’ simple 简单的; there ain’t nothing to it.  What’s the good of a plan that ain’t no more many trouble 麻烦 than that?  It’s as mild 温柔的 as goose 鹅-milk 奶.  Why, Huck, it wouldn’t make no more many talk 说话 than breaking 破；断 into a soap 肥皂 factory 工厂.”

I never said nothing, because I warn’t expecting nothing different 不同的; but I knowed mighty 威武 well that when‧ever 随时 he got get his plan ready 准备好的 it wouldn’t have none 没有人 of them objections 反对 to it.

And it didn’t.  He told tell me what it was, and I see in a minute 6 it was worth 值得的 fifteen 十五 of mine 我的 for style 样式, and would make Jim just as free 自由的 a man as mine would, and maybe 也许 get us all killed 杀死… besides 而且.  So I was satisfied 使满意, and said we would waltz in on it.  I needn’t tell what it was here, because I knowed it wouldn’t stay 停留 the way, it was.  I knowed he would be changing it around every which way as we went along, and heaving 举起 in new bullinesses wherever 随地 he got get a chance 机会.  And that is what he done.

Well, one thing was dead 死去的 sure 确信的, and that was that Tom Sawyer was in earnest 热心的, and was actuly going to help steal that nigger out of slavery 奴隶制度. That was the thing that was too many for me.  Here was a boy that was respect‧able 可敬 and well brung up; and had a character 性格 to lose 失去; and folks 民间 at home that had characters 性格; and he was bright 明亮的 and not leather 皮-headed; and knowing and not ignorant 愚昧; and not mean, but kind; and yet here he was, without any more many pride 自尊, or rightness, or feeling, than to stoop 哈腰 to this business, and make him‧self 他自己 a shame 羞愧, and his family a shame, before every‧body 每人.  I couldn’t under‧stand 懂 it no way at all.  It was outrageous 蛮横的, and I knowed I ought 应当 to just up and tell him so; and so be his true 真正的 friend 朋友, and let him quit 放弃 the thing right where he was and save 节省 him‧self 他自己. And I did start to tell him; but he shut 关闭 me up, and says:

“Don’t you reckon 估计 I know what I’m about?  Don’t I generly know what I’m about?”

“Yes.”

“Didn’t I say I was going to help steal the nigger?”

“Yes.”

“Well, then.”

That’s all he said, and that’s all I said.  It warn’t no use to say any more many; because when he said he’d do a thing, he always done it.  But I couldn’t make out how he was willing to go into this thing; so I just let it go, and never bothered 烦 no more many about it.  If he was bound 必定；跳 to have it so, I couldn’t help it.

When we got get home the house was all dark 黑暗的 and still; so we went on down to the hut 小屋 by the ash 灰-hopper 跳 for to examine 检查 it.  We went through the yard 院子 so as to see what the hounds 猎犬 would do.  They knowed us, and didn’t make no more many noise 噪音 than country dogs 狗 is always doing when any‧thing 任何东西 comes by in the night.  When we got get to the cabin 舱 we took a look at the front 前面 and the two sides; and on the side I warn’t acquainted 认识 with—which was the north 北方 side—we found find a square 正方形；广场 window 窗-hole 洞, up tolerable high, with just one stout 肥硕 board 板，上船 nailed 钉子 across 穿过 it.  I says:

“Here’s the ticket 票.  This hole’s big enough for Jim to get through if we wrench 扳手 off the board.”

Tom says:

“It’s as simple 简单的 as tit-tat-toe 脚趾, three-in-a- row 行, and as easy 容易的 as playing hooky.  I should hope 希望 we can find a way that’s a little more many complicated 使复杂化 than that, Huck Finn.”

“Well, then,” I says, “how ‘ll it do to saw see him out, the way I done before I was murdered 谋杀 that time?”

“That’s more many like,” he says.  "It’s real mysterious 神秘, and trouble‧some 麻烦, and good,” he says; “but I bet we can find a way that’s twice 两次 as long.  There ain’t no hurry 赶紧; le’s keep on looking around.”

Betwixt the hut 小屋 and the fence 栅栏, on the back side, was a lean 靠-to that joined 连接 the hut at the eaves, and was made out of plank 板.  It was as long as the hut, but narrow 狭窄的—only about six 6 foot 脚；英尺 wide 宽的.  The door 门 to it was at the south 南方 end, and was padlocked.  Tom he went to the soap 肥皂-kettle 水壶 and searched 搜寻 around, and fetched 取 back the iron 铁器 thing they lift 举起 the lid 盖子 with; so he took it and prized 奖赏 out one of the staples 钉书针.  The chain 链子 fell 落下:fall down, and we opened the door 门 and went in, and shut 关闭 it, and struck 敲击:strike a match 比赛；火柴, and see the shed was only built build against a cabin 舱 and hadn’t no connection 连接 with it; and there warn’t no floor 地面 to the shed, nor 也不 nothing in it but some old rusty 生疏 played-out hoes and spades 铁锹 and picks 挑选 and a crippled 削弱 plow 犁.  The match 比赛；火柴 went out, and so did we, and shoved 推 in the staple 钉书针 again, and the door 6 was locked 锁 as good as ever. Tom was joyful 快乐.  He says;

“Now we’re all right.  We’ll dig 挖 him out.  It ‘ll take about a week!”

Then we started for the house, and I went in the back door 7—you only have to pull 拉 a buck‧skin 降压‧皮 latch 闩-string 绳子, they don’t fasten 系牢 the doors 门—but that warn’t romantical enough for Tom Sawyer; no way would do him but he must climb 攀登 up the lightning 闪电-rod 杆.  But after he got get up half 6 way about three times, and missed 错过；想念 fire 火 and fell 落下:fall every time, and the last time most many busted 胸围 his brains 脑 out, he thought think he’d got get to give it up; but after he was rested 休息，其余 he allowed 允许 he would give her one more many turn for luck 运气, and this time he made the trip 旅游.

In the morning 早晨 we was up at break 破；断 of day, and down to the nigger cabins 舱 to pet 宠物 the dogs 狗 and make friends 朋友 with the nigger that fed 喂养:feed Jim—if it was Jim that was being 存在 fed.  The niggers was just getting through break‧fast 早餐 and starting for the fields 田; and Jim’s nigger was piling 堆 up a tin 锡 pan 平底锅 with bread 面包 and meat 肉 and things; and whilst 同时 the others 别的 was leaving, the key 钥匙 come from the house.

This nigger had a good-natured, chuckle 暗笑-headed face, and his wool 羊毛 was all tied 打结；系上；关系 up in little bunches 束 with thread 线.  That was to keep witches 巫婆 off.  He said the witches 巫婆 was pestering him awful 糟糕的 these nights, and making him see all kinds of strange 奇怪；陌生 things, and hear all kinds of strange words and noises 噪音, and he didn’t believe 信任 he was ever witched 巫婆 so long before in his life.  He got get so worked up, and got get to running on so about his troubles 麻烦, he forgot 忘记:forget all about what he’d been a-going to do.  So Tom says:

“What’s the vittles for?  Going to feed 喂养 the dogs 狗?”

The nigger kind of smiled 微笑 around gradually 逐步地 over his face, like when you heave 举起 a brick‧bat 砖‧蝙蝠；球棒 in a mud 泥-puddle, and he says:

“Yes, Mars Sid, A dog 狗.  Cur’us dog, too.  Does you want to go en 恩 look at ‘im?”

“Yes.”

I hunched 直觉 Tom, and whispers 低声说:

“You going, right here in the day‧break 一天‧破；断?  that warn’t the plan.”

“No, it warn’t; but it’s the plan now.”

So, drat him, we went along, but I didn’t like it much.  When we got get in we couldn’t hardly 几乎不 see any‧thing 任何东西, it was so dark 黑暗的; but Jim was there, sure 确信的 enough, and could see us; and he sings 唱 out:

“Why, Huck!  En good lan’! ain’ dat Misto Tom?”

I just knowed how it would be; I just expected it.  I didn’t know nothing to do; and if I had I couldn’t a done it, because that nigger busted 胸围 in and says:

“Why, de gracious 亲切 sakes 缘故! do he know you genlmen?”

We could see pretty 8 well now.  Tom he looked at the nigger, steady 稳定的 and kind of wondering 琢磨；奇妙, and says:

“Does who know us?”

“Why, dis-yer run‧away 逃跑 nigger.”

“I don’t reckon 估计 he does; but what put that into your head?”

“What put it dar?  Didn’ he jis’ dis minute 7 sing 唱 out like he knowed you?”

Tom says, in a puzzled 使迷惑-up kind of way:

“Well, that’s mighty 威武 curious 好奇的.  Who sung 唱:sing out? when did he sing out?  what did he sing out?” And turns to me, perfectly 完美地，完满地 ca’m, and says, “Did you hear any‧body 任何人 sing out?”

Of course there warn’t nothing to be said but the one thing; so I says:

“No; I ain’t heard hear nobody 没有人 say nothing.”

Then he turns to Jim, and looks him over like he never see him before, and says:

“Did you sing out?”

“No, sah,” says Jim; “I hain’t said nothing, sah.”

“Not a word?”

“No, sah, I hain’t said a word.”

“Did you ever see us before?”

“No, sah; not as I knows on.”

So Tom turns to the nigger, which was looking wild 野生的 and distressed 苦难, and says, kind of severe 严峻的:

“What do you reckon 估计’s the matter with you, anyway 无论如何?  What made you think some‧body 某人 sung 唱:sing out?”

“Oh, it’s de dad 爸- blame 指责’ witches 巫婆, sah, en 恩 I wisht I was dead 死去的, I do.  Dey’s awluz at it, sah, en 恩 dey do mos’ kill 杀死… me, dey sk’yers me so.   Please 请;讨人喜欢 to don’t tell nobody 没有人 ‘bout 回合 it sah, er ole Mars Silas he’ll scole me; ‘kase he say dey ain’t no witches 巫婆.  I jis’ wish 希望 to goodness 善良 he was heah now—den 巢穴 what would he say!  I jis’ bet he couldn’ fine 好的 no way to git aroun’ it dis time.  But it’s awluz jis’ so; people dat’s sot, stays 停留 sot; dey won 8’t look into noth’n’en 恩 fine it out f’r deyselves, en 恩 when you fine it out en 恩 tell um ‘bout 回合 it, dey doan’ b’lieve you.”

Tom give him a dime 十分钱, and said we wouldn’t tell nobody 没有人; and told tell him to buy 购买 some more many thread 线 to tie 打结；系上；关系 up his wool 羊毛 with; and then looks at Jim, and says:

“I wonder 琢磨；奇妙 if Uncle 叔叔 Silas is going to hang 悬挂 this nigger.  If I was to catch 抓；赶上 a nigger that was ungrateful enough to run away, I wouldn’t give him up, I’d hang him.”  And whilst 同时 the nigger stepped 步；走 to the door 8 to look at the dime 十分钱 and bite 咬 it to see if it was good, he whispers 低声说 to Jim and says:

“Don’t ever let on to know us.  And if you hear any digging 挖 going on nights, it’s us; we’re going to set you free 自由的.”

Jim only had time to grab 用手抓 us by the hand and squeeze 挤 it; then the nigger come back, and we said we’d come again some time if the nigger wanted us to; and he said he would, more many particular 特别的 if it was dark 黑暗的, because the witches 巫婆 went for him mostly in the dark, and it was good to have folks 民间 around then.

CHAPTER 章节 XXXV.

IT would be most many an hour 小时 yet till 到 break‧fast 早餐, so we left 左边；留下；离开 and struck 敲击:strike down into the woods 木材；树林; because Tom said we got get to have some light to see how to dig 挖 by, and a lantern 灯笼 makes too much, and might get us into trouble 麻烦; what we must have was a lot 大量；份额 of them rotten 腐烂的 chunks 块 that’s called fox 狐狸- fire 火, and just makes a soft 软的 kind of a glow 辉光 when you lay 放置 them in a dark 6 place.  We fetched 取 an armful and hid 隐藏:hide it in the weeds 杂草, and set down to rest 休息，其余, and Tom says, kind of dissatisfied 使不满意:

“ Blame 指责 it, this whole 全部的 thing is just as easy 容易的 and awkward 难堪 as it can be. And so it makes it so rotten 腐烂的 difficult 困难的 to get up a difficult plan.  There ain’t no watch‧man 钟表；注视‧男人 to be drugged 药物—now there ought 应当 to be a watch‧man 钟表；注视‧男人.  There ain’t even a dog 狗 to give a sleeping 睡-mixture 混合 to.  And there’s Jim chained 链子 by one leg 腿, with a ten 十- foot 脚；英尺 chain 链子, to the leg of his bed 7:  why, all you got get to do is to lift 举起 up the bedstead and slip 滑 off the chain.  And Uncle 叔叔 Silas he trusts 信任 every‧body 每人; sends 派遣；送 the key 钥匙 to the punkin-headed nigger, and don’t send 派遣；送 nobody 没有人 to watch 钟表；注视 the nigger.  Jim could a got get out of that window 窗-hole 洞 before this, only there wouldn’t be no use trying to travel 旅行 with a ten 十- foot 脚；英尺 chain 链子 on his leg 腿.  Why, drat it, Huck, it’s the stupidest 愚蠢的 arrangement 安排 I ever see. You got get to invent 发明 all the difficulties 困难.  Well, we can’t help it; we got get to do the best 最好 we can with the materials 材料 we’ve got get. “What in the nation can he do with it?”

Tom said that what he meant mean was, we could steal anything 8 we needed. Well, as I was saying, we waited 等候 that morning 早晨 till 8 everybody 8 was settled 解决；定居 down to business, and nobody 10 in sight 视力 around the yard 院子; then Tom he carried 运送；支撑 the sack 解雇 into the lean 靠-to whilst 同时 I stood stand off a piece 6 to keep watch 钟表；注视.  By and by he come out, and we went and set down on the wood‧pile 木材；树林‧堆 to talk 说话.  He says:

“Huck Finn, did you ever hear of a prisoner 11 having picks and shovels 铲, and all the modern 现代的 conveniences 方便 in his wardrobe 衣柜 to dig 挖 him‧self 他自己 out with?  Now I want to ask you—if you got get any reasonableness in you at all—what kind of a show would that give him to be a hero 英雄?  Why, they might as well lend 把…借给 him the key 钥匙 and done with it.  Picks and shovels 铲—why, they wouldn’t furnish 陈设 ‘em to a king 国王.”

“Well, then,” I says, “if we don’t want the picks 挑选 and shovels 铲, what do we want?”

“A couple 两；双 of case-knives.”

“To dig 挖 the foundations 基础 out from under that cabin 舱 with?”

“Yes.”

“Confound it, it’s foolish 傻, Tom.”

“It don’t make no difference 差别 how foolish 傻 it is, it’s the right way—and it’s the regular 有规律的 way.  And there ain’t no other way, that ever I heard hear of, and I’ve read all the books 书 that gives any information about these things. They always dig 挖 out with a case- knife 刀—and not through dirt 泥土, mind you; generly it’s through solid 固体的 rock 岩石.  And it takes them weeks and weeks and weeks, and for ever and ever.  Why, look at one of them prisoners 犯人，囚犯 in the bottom 底部 dungeon of the Castle 城堡 Deef, in the harbor 海港 of Marseilles, that dug 挖:dig him‧self 他自己 out that way; how long was he at it, you reckon 估计?”

“I don’t know.”

“Well, guess 推测.”

“I don’t know.  A month 月 and a half 8.”

“Thirty-seven 七 year—and he come out in China.  That’s the kind.  I wish 希望 the bottom 底部 of this fortress 堡垒 was solid 固体的 rock 岩石.”

“Jim don’t know nobody 11 in China.”

“What’s that got get to do with it?   Neither 都不 did that other fellow 同伴.  But you’re always a-wandering 漫步 off on a side issue.  Why can’t youstick 棍；粘贴 to the main 主要的 point?”

He looked kind of weary 厌倦 and discouraged 不鼓励-like, and says:

He never said nothing.  But he sighed 叹, and pretty 11 soon 7 he stopped 7 digging 挖, and then for a good little while I knowed that he was thinking. Then he says:

“It ain’t no use, Huck, it ain’t a-going to work.  If we was prisoners 犯人，囚犯 it would, because then we’d have as many years as we wanted, and no hurry 赶紧; and we wouldn’t get but a few minutes 分 to dig 11, every day, while they was changing watches 钟表；注视, and so our hands wouldn’t get blistered 起泡, and we could keep it up right along, year in and year out, and do it right, and the way it ought 8 to be done.  But we can’t fool 愚人 along; we got get to rush 仓促; we ain’t got get no time to spare 节省；多余的；备用件.  If we was to put in another night this way we’d have to knock 敲 off for a week to let our hands get well—couldn’t touch 触摸 a case- knife 刀 with them sooner 立刻.”

“I’ll tell you.  It ain’t right, and it ain’t moral 道德的, and I wouldn’t like it to get out; but there ain’t only just the one way:  we got get to dig 12 him out with the picks 挑选, and let on it’s case-knives.”

“Now you’re talking 说话!”  I says; “your head gets leveler 水平 and leveler all the time, Tom Sawyer,” I says.  " Picks is the thing, moral 道德的 or no moral; and as for me, I don’t care 6 shucks for the morality 道德 of it, nohow.  When I start in to steal a nigger, or a water‧melon 水‧瓜, or a Sunday-school book 书, I ain’t no ways particular 特别的 how it’s done so it’s done.  What I want is my nigger; or what I want is my water‧melon 水‧瓜; or what I want is my Sunday-school book; and if a pick 挑选’s the handiest thing, that’s the thing I’m a-going to dig 13 that nigger or that water‧melon 水‧瓜 or that Sunday-school book out with; and I don’t give a dead 死去的 rat 鼠 what the authorities 权威 thinks about it nuther.”

I didn’t know just what to do—but then I thought think.  I scratched 刮 around amongst 之中 the old tools 器具, and got get a pickaxe and give it to him, and he took it and went to work, and never said a word.

So he done it.

Next day Tom stole a pewter spoon 匙 and a brass 黄铜 candle‧stick 蜡烛‧棍；粘贴 in the house, for to make some pens 笔 for Jim out of, and six 6 tallow candles 蜡烛; and I hung 悬挂:hang around the nigger cabins 舱 and laid 放置:lay for a chance 机会, and stole three tin 锡 plates 盘子.  Tom says it wasn’t enough; but I said nobody 13 wouldn’t ever see the plates 6 that Jim throwed 投掷 out, because they’d fall 落下 in the dog 8-fennel and jimpson weeds 杂草 under the window 8-hole 洞—then we could tote them back and he could use them over again.  So Tom was satisfied 使满意.  Then he says:

“Now, the thing to study out is, how to get the things to Jim.”

“Take them in through the hole 7,” I says, “when we get it done.”

He only just looked scornful, and said something about nobody ever heard hear of such an idiotic idea 主意, and then he went to studying.  By and by he said he had ciphered out two or three ways, but there warn’t no need to decide 决定 on any of them yet.  Said we’d got get to post 邮件 Jim first.

That night we went down the lightning 闪电-rod 杆 a little after ten 十, and took one of the candles 蜡烛 along, and listened 倾听 under the window 9-hole 8, and heard hear Jim snoring 鼾; so we pitched 沥青 it in, and it didn’t wake 醒 him.  Then we whirled 旋转 in with the pick 挑选 and shovel 铲, and in about two hours 小时 and a half the job was done.  We crept 爬行:creep in under Jim’s bed and into the cabin 舱, and pawed 爪子 around and found find the candle 蜡烛 and lit light it, and stood stand over Jim awhile 一会儿, and found find him looking hearty 爽朗 and healthy 健康, and then we woke 醒:wake him up gentle 温和的 and gradual 渐进的.  He was so glad 高兴的 to see us he most many cried 哭，叫喊; and called us honey 蜜糖, and all the pet 宠物 names he could think of; and was for having us hunt 打猎 up a cold 寒冷的-chisel to cut 砍 the chain 8 off of his leg 11 with right away, and clearing out without losing 失去 any time.  But Tom he showed show him how unregular it would be, and set down and told tell him all about our plans, and how we could alter 改变 them in a minute 8 any time there was an alarm 警告; and not to be the least 最小的 afraid 害怕的, because we would see he got get away, sure 6.  So Jim he said it was all right, and we set there and talked 说话 over old times awhile 一会儿, and then Tom asked a lot 大量；份额 of questions, and when Jim told tell him Uncle 8 Silas come in every day or two to pray 祈祷 with him, and Aunt 阿姨 Sally come in to see if he was comfort‧able 舒服；自在 and had plenty 丰富 to eat 吃, and both of them was kind as they could be, Tom says:

“Now I know how to fix 固定 it.  We’ll send 派遣；送 you some things by them.”

He told tell him every‧thing 每件事物.  Jim he couldn’t see no sense in the most many of it, but he allowed 允许 we was white 白色的 folks 民间 and knowed better well than him; so he was satisfied 使满意, and said he would do it all just as Tom said.

Jim had plenty 丰富 corn 玉米-cob pipes 管子 and tobacco 烟草; so we had a right down good sociable 社交的 time; then we crawled 爬行 out through the hole 9, and so home to bed, with hands that looked like they’d been chawed.  Tom was in high spirits 精神. He said it was the best 8 fun 乐趣 he ever had in his life, and the most many intellectural; and said if he only could see his way to it we would keep it up all the rest 休息，其余 of our lives and leave Jim to our children to get out; for he believed 信任 Jim would come to like it better well and better well the more many he got get used to it.  He said that in that way it could be strung out to as much as eighty 八十 year, and would be the best 9 time on record 记录.  And he said it would make us all celebrated 庆祝 that had a hand in it.

In the morning 早晨 we went out to the wood‧pile 木材；树林‧堆 and chopped 劈 up the brass 黄铜 candle‧stick 蜡烛‧棍；粘贴 into handy 便利 sizes 大小, and Tom put them and the pewter spoon 匙 in hispocket 口袋.  Then we went to the nigger cabins 舱, and while I got get Nat’s notice 注意 off, Tom shoved 推 a piece 7 of candle‧stick 蜡烛‧棍；粘贴 into the middle 中部 of a corn 玉米-pone that was in Jim’s pan 平底锅, and we went along with Nat to see how it would work, and it just worked noble 高尚的; when Jim bit 一点 into it it most many mashed 糊状物 all his teeth out; and there warn’t ever anything could a worked better well. Tom said so himself 6. Jim he never let on but what it was only just a piece 8 of rock 岩石 or something like that that’s always getting into bread 面包, you know; but after that he never bit into nothing but what he jabbed 戳 his fork 叉 into it in three or four places first.

And whilst 同时 we was a-standing there in the dimmish light, here comes a couple 两；双 of the hounds 猎犬 bulging 凸 in from under Jim’s bed; and they kept keep on piling 堆 in till 10 there was eleven 十一 of them, and there warn’t hardly 几乎不 room in there to get your breath 呼吸.  By jings, we forgot 忘记:forget to fasten 系牢 that lean 靠-to door 9!  The nigger Nat he only just hollered “Witches” once, and keeled over on to the floor 地面 amongst 之中 the dogs 狗, and begun begin to groan 呻吟 like he was dying 死亡.  Tom jerked 混蛋 the door open and flung out a slab 板 of Jim’s meat 肉, and the dogs went for it, and in two seconds he was out himself 7 and back again and shut 关闭 the door, and I knowed he’d fixed 固定 the other door too. Then he went to work on the nigger, coaxing 哄 him and petting 宠物 him, and asking him if he’d been imagining 想象 he saw see something again.  He raised 提升；种 up, and blinked 眨 his eyes around, and says:

“Mars Sid, you’ll say I’s a fool 愚人, but if I didn’t b’lieve I see most many a million dogs 6, er devils 魔鬼, er some’n, I wisht I may die 死亡 right heah in dese tracks 小路.  I did, mos’ sholy.  Mars Sid, I felt feel um—I felt feel um, sah; dey was all over me.  Dad 爸 fetch 取 it, I jis’ wisht I could git my han’s on one er dem witches 巫婆 jis’ wunst—on’y jis’ wunst—it’s all I’d ast.  But mos’ly I wisht dey’d lemme ‘lone 孤单, I does.”

Tom says:

“Well, I tell you what I think.  What makes them come here just at this run‧away 逃跑 nigger’s break‧fast 早餐-time?  It’s because they’re hungry 饥饿; that’s the reason 理由.  You make them a witch 巫婆 pie 馅饼; that’s the thing for you to do.”

“But my lan’, Mars Sid, how’s I gwyne to make ‘m a witch 巫婆 pie 馅饼?  I doan’ know how to make it.  I hain’t ever hearn er sich a thing b’fo’.”

“Well, then, I’ll have to make it myself 我.”

“Will you do it, honey 蜜糖?—will you?  I’ll wusshup de groun’ und’ yo’ foot 6, I will!”

“All right, I’ll do it, seeing it’s you, and you’ve been good to us and showed show us the run‧away 逃跑 nigger.  But you got get to be mighty 威武 careful 小心.  When we come around, you turn your back; and then what‧ever 无论什么 we’ve put in the pan 平底锅, don’t you let on you see it at all.  And don’t you look when Jim unloads 卸下 the pan—something might happen 发生, I don’t know what.  And above 之上 all, don’t you handle 操纵 the witch 巫婆-things.”

“Hannel ‘M, Mars Sid?  What is you a-talkin’ ‘bout 回合?  I wouldn’ lay 放置 de weight 重量 er my finger 手指 on um, not f’r ten 十 hund’d thous 汝’n bill‧ion 十亿 dollars 美元, I wouldn’t.”

CHAPTER 章节 XXXVII.

THAT was all fixed 固定.  So then we went away and went to the rubbage- pile 堆 in the back yard 院子, where they keep the old boots 靴；鞋, and rags 抹布, and pieces 块 of bottles 瓶子, and wore 穿着:wear-out tin 锡 things, and all such truck 卡车，车辆, and scratched 刮 around and found find an old tin wash‧pan 洗‧平底锅, and stopped 8 up the holes 洞 as well as we could, to bake 烤 the pie 馅饼 in, and took it down cellar 地窖 and stole it full 满的 of flour 面粉 and started for break‧fast 早餐, and found find a couple 6 of shingle 卵石-nails 钉子 that Tom said would be handy 便利 for a prisoner 12 to scrabble his name and sorrows 悲痛 on the dungeon walls 墙 with, and dropped 放下；滴；掉 one of them in Aunt 10 Sally’s apron 围裙-pocket 口袋 which was hanging 悬挂 on a chair 椅子, and t’other we stuck 棍；粘贴:stick in the band 带 of Uncle 10 Silas’s hat 帽子, which was on the bureau 局, because we heard hear the children say their pa and ma 嘛 was going to the run‧away 逃跑 nigger’s house this morning 早晨, and then went to breakfast 8, and Tom dropped 放下；滴；掉 the pewter spoon 匙 in Uncle 11 Silas’s coat 上衣-pocket 口袋, and Aunt 11 Sally wasn’t come yet, so we had to wait 等候 a little while.

And when she come she was hot 热的 and red 红色的 and cross 穿过；十字, and couldn’t hardly 几乎不 wait for the blessing 祝福; and then she went to sluicing out coffee 咖啡 with one hand and cracking 破裂 the handiest child’s head with her thimble with the other, and says:

“I’ve hunted 打猎 high and I’ve hunted low 低的, and it does beat 打败 all what has become of your other shirt 衬衫.”

Uncle 12 Silas he says:

“It’s most many uncommon 罕见 curious 好奇的, I can’t under‧stand 懂 it.  I know perfectly 完美地，完满地 well I took it off, because—”

“Because you hain’t got get but one on.  Just listen 倾听 at the man!  I know you took it off, and know it by a better well way than your wool 羊毛-gethering memory 记忆, too, because it was on the clo’s-line yesterday 昨天—I see it there myself 我. But it’s gone, that’s the long and the short 短的 of it, and you’ll just have to change to a red 红色的 flann’l one till 11 I can get time to make a new one. And it ‘ll be the third I’ve made in two years.  It just keeps a body 6 on the jump 跳 to keep you in shirts 衬衫; and what‧ever 无论什么 you do manage 使用 to do with ‘m all is more many’n I can make out.  A body 7 ‘d think you would learn 学习 to take some sort 分类 of care 7 of ‘em at your time of life.”

“I know it, Sally, and I do try all I can.  But it oughtn’t to be altogether 全部地 my fault 缺点, because, you know, I don’t see them nor 10 have nothing to do with them except 把…除外 when they’re on me; and I don’t believe 6 I’ve ever lost 失去的 one of them off of me.”

“Well, it ain’t your fault if you haven’t, Silas; you’d a done it if you could, I reckon 估计.  And the shirt 衬衫 ain’t all that’s gone, nuther.  Ther’s a spoon 匙 gone; and that ain’t all.  There was ten 十, and now ther’s only nine 九. “Why, what else 其他 is gone, Sally?”

“Ther’s six 6 candles 蜡烛 gone—that’s what.  The rats 鼠 could a got get the candles 蜡烛, and I reckon 估计 they did; I wonder 琢磨；奇妙 they don’t walk 走；步行同道 off with the whole 全部的 place, the way you’re always going to stop 停止 their holes 洞 and don’t do it; and if they warn’t fools 愚人 they’d sleep 睡 in your hair 头发, Silas—you’d never find it out; but you can’t lay 放置 the spoon 匙 on the rats 鼠, and that I know.”

“Well, Sally, I’m in fault 缺点, and I acknowledge 确认 it; I’ve been remiss; but I won 10’t let to-morrow go by without stopping 停止 up them holes 洞.”

“Oh, I wouldn’t hurry 赶紧; next year ‘ll do.  Matilda Angelina Araminta Phelps!”

Whack comes the thimble, and the child snatches 抢夺 her claws 爪 out of the sugar 食糖-bowl 碗 without fooling 愚人 around any.  Just then the nigger woman steps 步；走 on to the pass‧age 通道, and says:

“Missus, dey’s a sheet 纸 gone.”

“A sheet gone!  Well, for the land 陆地；着陆’s sake 缘故!”

“I’ll stop 停止 up them holes 洞 to-day,” says Uncle 13 Silas, looking sorrowful.

“Oh, do shet up!—s’ pose 以…身份出现，造成 the rats 鼠 took the sheet 纸?  where’s it gone, Lize?”

“Clah to goodness 善良 I hain’t no notion 概念, Miss 错过；想念’ Sally.  She wuz on de clo’sline yistiddy, but she done gone:  she ain’ dah no mo’ now.”

“I reckon 估计 the world is coming to an end.  I never see the beat 打败 of it in all my born 生；熊:bear days.  A shirt 衬衫, and a sheet 纸, and a spoon 匙, and six 6 can—”

“Missus,” comes a young yaller wench, “dey’s a brass 黄铜 cannelstick miss 错过；想念’n.”

“Cler out from here, you hussy, er I’ll take a skillet to ye!”

Well, she was just a-biling 胆汁.  I begun begin to lay 放置 for a chance 机会; I reckoned 估计 I would sneak 潜行 out and go for the woods 木材；树林 till 12 the weather 天气 mode‧rate 有节制的.  She kept keep a-raging 愤怒 right along, running her insurrection all by her‧self 她自己, and everybody 10 else 其他 mighty 威武 meek and quiet 清静的; and at last Uncle Silas, looking kind of foolish 傻, fishes 鱼 up that spoon 匙 out of hispocket 口袋.  She stopped 9, with her mouth 口 open and her hands up; and as for me, I wished 希望 I was in Jeruslem or some‧where 某处. But not long, because she says:

“It’s just as I expected.  So you had it in your pocket all the time; and like as not you’ve got get the other things there, too.  How’d it get there?”

“I reely don’t know, Sally,” he says, kind of apologizing 道歉；认错；谢罪, “or you know I would tell.  I was a-studying over my text 文本 in Acts Seventeen before breakfast 9, and I reckon 估计 I put it in there, not noticing 注意, meaning to put my Testament in, and it must be so, because my Testament ain’t in; but I’ll go and see; and if the Testament is where I had it, I’ll know I didn’t put it in, and that will show that I laid 放置:lay the Testament down and took up the spoon 匙, and—”

“Well, it ain’t no use to send 派遣；送 things by him no more many, he ain’t reliable 可靠.” Then he says:  "But he done us a good turn with the spoon 11, anyway 无论如何, without knowing it, and so we’ll go and do him one without him knowing it— stop 停止 up his rat 鼠- holes 洞.”

There was a noble 高尚的 good lot 大量；份额 of them down cellar 地窖, and it took us a whole 全部的 hour 小时, but we done the job tight 紧的 and good and ship‧shape 船‧形状.  Then we heard hear steps 步；走 on the stairs 楼梯, and blowed 吹；殴打 out our light and hid 隐藏:hide; and here comes the old man, with a candle 蜡烛 in one hand and a bundle 捆 of stuff 塞满；材料 in t’other, looking as absent 缺席的-minded as year before last.  He went a mooning 月亮 around, first to one rat 鼠-hole 10 and then another, till he’d been to them all.  Then he stood stand about five minutes 分, picking 挑选 tallow-drip 滴 off of his candle 蜡烛 and thinking.  Then he turns off slow 慢的 and dreamy towards the stairs 楼梯, saying:

“Well, for the life of me I can’t remember 记得 when I done it.  I could show her now that I warn’t to blame 指责 on account 账；解释 of the rats 鼠.  But never mind—let it go.  I reckon 估计 it wouldn’t do no good.”

And so he went on a-mumbling 咕哝 up stairs 楼梯, and then we left 左边；留下；离开.  He was a mighty 威武 nice 美好的 old man.  And always is.

Tom was a good deal 很多；对付 bothered 烦 about what to do for a spoon 12, but he said we’d got get to have it; so he took a think.  When he had ciphered it out he told tell me how we was to do; then we went and waited 等候 around the spoon 13-basket 篮 till we see Aunt 12 Sally coming, and then Tom went to counting 数；总数 the spoons 匙 and laying 放置 them out to one side, and I slid 滑落:slide one of them up my sleeve 袖, and Tom says:

“Why, Aunt 13 Sally, there ain’t but nine 九 spoons yet.”

She says:

“Go ‘long to your play, and don’t bother me.  I know better well, I counted 数；总数 ‘m myself 我.”

“Well, I’ve counted them twice 两次, Aunty, and I can’t make but nine 九.”

She looked out of all patience 耐心, but of course she come to count 数；总数— any‧body 任何人 would.

“I declare 宣布 to gracious 亲切 ther’ ain’t but nine 九!” she says.  "Why, what in the world—plague 鼠疫 take the things, I’ll count ‘m again.”

So I slipped 滑 back the one I had, and when she got get done counting 数；总数, she says:

“ Hang 悬挂 the trouble‧some 麻烦 rubbage, ther’s ten 十 now!” and she looked huffy and bothered 烦 both.  But Tom says:

“Why, Aunty, I don’t think there’s ten 十.”

“You numskull, didn’t you see me count 数；总数 ‘m?”

“I know, but—”

“Well, I’ll count ‘m again.”

So I smouched one, and they come out nine 九, same as the other time.  Well, she was in a tearing 撕裂；泪 way—just a-trembling 发抖 all over, she was so mad 疯狂的.  But she counted 数；总数 and counted till she got get that addled she’d start to count 数；总数 in thebasket 篮 for a spoon 14 some‧time 有时; and so, three times they come out right, and three times they come out wrong 有毛病的.  Then she grabbed 用手抓 up the basket and slammed 猛撞 it across 穿过 the house and knocked 敲 the cat 猫 galley-west 西; and she said cle’r out and let her have some peace 和平, and if we come bothering 烦 around her again betwixt that and dinner 正餐 she’d skin 皮 us.  So we had the odd 奇 spoon 15, and dropped 放下；滴；掉 it in her apron 围裙-pocket 口袋 whilst 同时 she was a-giving us our sailing 航行；帆 orders, and Jim got get it all right, along with her shingle 卵石nail 钉子, before noon 正午.  We was very well satisfied 使满意 with this business, and Tom allowed 允许 it was worth 值得的 twice 两次 the trouble 9 it took, because he said now she couldn’t ever count 数；总数 them spoons 匙 twice 两次 alike 同样的 again to save 节省 her life; and wouldn’t believe 7 she’d counted 数；总数 them right if she did; and said that after she’d about counted her head off for the next three days he judged 审判 she’d give it up and offer 提供 to kill 杀死… any‧body 任何人 that wanted her to ever count 6 them any more many.

So we put the sheet 纸 back on the line that night, and stole one out of her closet 壁橱; and kept keep on putting it back and stealing 偷 it again for a couple 7 of days till she didn’t know how many sheets 纸 she had any more many, and she didn’t care 8, and warn’t a-going to bullyrag the rest 7 of her soul 灵魂 out about it, and wouldn’t count 7 them again not to save 节省 her life; she druther die 死亡 first.

So we was all right now, as to the shirt 9 and the sheet 纸 and the spoon 16 and the candles 蜡烛, by the help of the calf 小牛 and the rats 鼠 and the mixed 混合-up counting 数；总数; and as to the candle‧stick 蜡烛‧棍；粘贴, it warn’t no consequence 后果, it would blow 吹；殴打 over by and by.

But that pie 馅饼 was a job; we had no end of trouble 10 with that pie 馅饼.  We fixed 固定 it up away down in the woods 木材；树林, and cooked 烹调 it there; and we got get it done at last, and very satisfactory 满意, too; but not all in one day; and we had to use up three wash 洗- pans 平底锅 full 满的 of flour 面粉 before we got get through, and we got get burnt 烧:burn pretty much all over, in places, and eyes put out with the smoke 烟; because, you see, we didn’t want nothing but a crust 脆皮, and we couldn’t prop 支柱 it up right, and she would always cave 洞穴 in.  But of course we thought think of the right way at last—which was to cook 烹调 the ladder 11, too, in the pie 馅饼.  So then we laid 放置:lay in with Jim the second night, and tore 撕裂；泪:tear up the sheet 8 all in littlestrings 绳子 and twisted 扭成一束 them together 同时, and long before day‧light 日光 we had a lovely 可爱的 rope 粗绳 that you could a hung 悬挂:hang a person with.  We let on it took nine 九 months 月 to make it.

And in the fore‧noon 前面‧正午 we took it down to the woods 木材；树林, but it wouldn’t go into the pie 馅饼.  Being 9 made of a whole 全部的 sheet 9, that way, there was rope 9 enough for forty 四十 pies 馅饼 if we’d a wanted them, and plenty 丰富 left 左边；留下；离开 over for soup 汤, or sausage 香肠, or anything you choose 挑选.  We could a had a whole 6 dinner 正餐.

But we didn’t need it.  All we needed was just enough for the pie 馅饼, and so we throwed 投掷 the rest 8 away.  We didn’t cook 烹调 none 没有人 of the pies 馅饼 in the wash 洗- pan 平底锅— afraid 害怕的 the solder would melt 熔化; but Uncle Silas he had a noble 高尚的 brass 黄铜 warming 暖和的- pan 平底锅 which he thought think consider‧able 大量 of, because it belonged 属于 to one of his ancesters with a long wooden 木制的 handle 操纵 that come over from England with William the Conqueror 征服者 in the Mayflower or one of them early ships 船 and was hid 隐藏:hide away up garret with a lot 大量；份额 of other old pots 罐 and things that was valuable 贵重的, not on account 账；解释 of being 10 any account, because they warn’t, but on account of them being 11 relicts, you know, and we snaked 蛇 her out, private 私有的, and took her down there, but she failed 失败 on the first pies 馅饼, because we didn’t know how, but she come up smiling 微笑 on the last one.  We took and lined her with dough 面团, and set her in the coals 煤, and loaded 负荷 her up with rag 抹布 rope 10, and put on a dough 面团 roof 屋顶, and shut 关闭 down the lid 盖子, and put hot 热的 embers on top 顶, and stood stand off five foot 7, with the long handle 操纵, cool 冷静的；酷 and comfort‧able 舒服；自在, and in fifteen 十五 minutes 分 she turned out a pie 馅饼 that was a satisfaction 满足 to look at. But the person that et it would want to fetch 取 a couple 8 of kags of toothpicks along, for if that rope 11 ladder 12 wouldn’t cramp 抽筋 him down to business I don’t know nothing what I’m talking 说话 about, and lay 放置 him in enough stomach 胃-ache 疼痛 to last him till next time, too.

Nat didn’t look when we put the witch 巫婆 pie 馅饼 in Jim’s pan 平底锅; and we put the three tin 锡 plates 7 in the bottom 底部 of the pan under the vittles; and so Jim got get every‧thing 每件事物 all right, and as soon 8 as he was by himself 8 he busted 胸围 into the pie 馅饼 and hid 隐藏:hide the rope 12 ladder 13 inside 里面的 of his straw 稻草 tick 蜱, and scratched 刮 some marks 斑点；标注 on a tin 锡 plate 盘子 and throwed 投掷 it out of the window 10-hole 11.

CHAPTER 章节 XXXVIII.

MAKING them pens 笔 was a distressid tough 坚强的 job, and so was the saw see; and Jim allowed 允许 the inscription 题词 was going to be the toughest 坚强的 of all.  That’s the one which the prisoner 13 has to scrabble on the wall 墙.  But he had to have it; Tom said he’d got get to; there warn’t no case of a state prisoner 14 not scrabbling his inscription 题词 to leave behind 7, and his coat 上衣 of arms 手臂.

“Geewhillikins,” I says, “but what does the rest 9 of it mean?”

“We ain’t got get no time to bother over that,” he says; “we got get to dig 15 in like all git-out.”

“Well, anyway 无论如何,” I says, “what’s some of it?  What’s a fess?”

“Shucks, Tom,” I says, “I think you might tell a person.  What’s a bar 条；酒吧 sinister 险恶?”

“Oh, I don’t know.  But he’s got get to have it.  All the nobility 贵族 does.”

That was just his way.  If it didn’t suit 一套外衣 him to explain 讲解 a thing to you, he wouldn’t do it.  You might pump 泵 at him a week, it wouldn’t make no difference 差别.

Tom’s voice 嗓音 trembled 发抖 whilst 同时 he was reading them, and he most many broke 破；断:break down. “I know how to fix 固定 it.  We got get to have a rock 7 for the coat 9 of arms 7 and mournful inscriptions 题词, and we can kill 杀死… two birds 鸟 with that same rock 8. There’s a gaudy big grind‧stone 磨碎‧石头 down at the mill 磨坊, and we’ll smouch it, and carve 雕刻 the things on it, and file 文件 out the pens 6 and the saw see on it, too.”

It warn’t no slouch of an idea 主意; and it warn’t no slouch of a grind‧stone 磨碎‧石头 nuther; but we allowed 6 we’d tackle 滑车 it.  It warn’t quite 相当 mid‧night 午夜 yet, so we cleared out for the mill 磨坊, leaving Jim at work.  We smouched the grind‧stone 磨碎‧石头, and set out to roll 翻滚；摇晃 her home, but it was a most many nation tough 坚强的 job. Sometimes 有时, do what we could, we couldn’t keep her from falling 落下 over, and she come mighty 威武 near mashing 糊状物 us every time.  Tom said she was going to get one of us, sure 7, before we got get through.  We got get her half way; and then we was plumb 垂直 played out, and most many drownded with sweat 流汗.  We see it warn’t no use; we got get to go and fetch 取 Jim. So he raised 提升；种 up his bed and slid 滑落:slide the chain 10 off of the bed-leg, and wrapt it round 圆形的；围绕 and round his neck 颈, and we crawled 爬行 out through our hole and down there, and Jim and me laid 放置:lay into that grind‧stone 磨碎‧石头 and walked 走；步行同道 her along like nothing; and Tom superintended.  He could out-super‧intend 超‧意欲 any boy I ever see.  He knowed how to do everything 7.

Our hole was pretty big, but it warn’t big enough to get the grind‧stone 磨碎‧石头 through; but Jim he took the pick 挑选 and soon 10 made it big enough.  Then Tom marked 斑点；标注 out them things on it with thenail 钉子, and set Jim to work on them, with the nail for a chisel and an iron 铁器 bolt 螺栓 from the rubbage in the lean 靠-to for a hammer 铁锤, and told tell him to work till the rest of his candle 蜡烛 quit 放弃 on him, and then he could go to bed, and hide 隐藏 the grind‧stone 磨碎‧石头 under his straw 稻草 tick 蜱 and sleep 睡 on it.  Then we helped him fix 7 his chain 11 back on the bed-leg, and was ready 准备好的 for bed ourselves 我们自己.  But Tom thought think of something, and says:

“You got get any spiders 蜘蛛 in here, Jim?”

“No, sah, thanks 谢谢 to goodness 善良 I hain’t, Mars Tom.”

“All right, we’ll get you some.”

“But bless 祝福 you, honey 蜜糖, I doan’ want none 没有人.  I’s afeard un um.  I jis’ ‘s soon 11 have rattlesnakes aroun’.”

Tom thought think a minute or two, and says:

“It’s a good idea 主意.  And I reckon 估计 it’s been done.  It must a been done; it stands to reason 理由.  Yes, it’s a prime 主要 good idea 6.  Where could you keep it?”

“Keep what, Mars Tom?”

“Why, a rattle‧snake 霸王鞭‧蛇.”

“De goodness 善良 gracious 亲切 alive 活的；有生命的, Mars Tom!  Why, if dey was a rattle‧snake 霸王鞭‧蛇 to come in heah I’d take en 恩 bust 胸围 right out thoo dat log 记录 wall 墙, I would, wid my head.”

“Why, Jim, you wouldn’t be afraid 害怕的 of it after a little.  You could tame 驯服的 it.”

“ Tame it!”

“Yes—easy 7 enough.  Every animal 动物 is grateful 感激的 for kindness 善良 and petting 宠物, and they wouldn’t think of hurting 损害 a person that pets 宠物 them.  Any book 书 will tell you that.  You try—that’s all I ask; just try for two or three days. Why, you can get him so, in a little while, that he’ll love 爱 you; and sleep 睡 with you; and won 11’t stay 停留 away from you a minute; and will let you wrap 包 him round 圆形的；围绕 your neck 颈 and put his head in your mouth 7.”

“ Please 请;讨人喜欢, Mars Tom—doan’ talk 说话 so!  I can’t stan’ it!  He’d let me shove 推 his head in my mouf—fer a favor 好感, hain’t it?  I lay 放置 he’d wait 等候 a pow’ful long time ‘fo’ I ast him.  En mo’ en 恩 dat, I doan’ want him to sleep 睡 wid me.”

“Jim, don’t act so foolish 傻.  A prisoner 16’s got get to have some kind of a dumb 哑 pet 宠物, and if a rattle‧snake 霸王鞭‧蛇 hain’t ever been tried, why, there’s more many glory 光荣 to be gained 获得 in your being 12 the first to ever try it than any other way you could ever think of to save 节省 your life.”

“Why, Mars Tom, I doan’ want no sich glory.   Snake 蛇 take ‘n bite 咬 Jim’s chin 下巴 off, den 巢穴 whah is de glory?  No, sah, I doan’ want no sich doin’s.”

“Blame 8 it, can’t you try?  I only want you to try—you needn’t keep it up if it don’t work.”

“But de trouble all done ef de snake 蛇 bite me while I’s a tryin’ him. Mars Tom, I’s willin’ to tackle 滑车 mos’ anything ‘at ain’t onreasonable, but ef you en 恩 Huck fetches 取 a rattle‧snake 霸王鞭‧蛇 in heah for me to tame 驯服的, I’s gwyne to leave, dat’s shore 岸.”

“Well, then, let it go, let it go, if you’re so bull 公牛-headed about it.  We can get you some garter-snakes 蛇, and you can tie 打结；系上；关系 some buttons 按钮 on their tails 尾, and let on they’re rattlesnakes, and I reckon 估计 that ‘ll have to do.”

“I k’n stan’ dem, Mars Tom, but blame 9’ ‘f I couldn’ get along widout um, I tell you dat.  I never knowed b’fo’ ‘t was so much bother and trouble to be a prisoner 17.”

“Well, it always is when it’s done right.  You got get any rats 鼠 around here?”

“No, sah, I hain’t seed 种子 none 没有人.”

“Well, we’ll get you some rats 鼠.”

“Why, Mars Tom, I doan’ want no rats 鼠.  Dey’s de dadblamedest creturs to ‘sturb a body 9, en 恩 rustle 沙沙 roun’ over ‘im, en 恩 bite 咬 his feet, when he’s tryin’ to sleep 睡, I ever see.  No, sah, gimme g’yarter-snakes 蛇, ‘f I’s got get to have ‘m, but doan’ gimme no rats 鼠; I hain’ got get no use f’r um, skasely.”

“But, Jim, you got get to have ‘em—they all do.  So don’t make no more many fuss 小题大作 about it.  Prisoners 6 ain’t ever without rats 鼠.  There ain’t no instance 例 of it.  And they train 火车；训练 them, and pet 宠物 them, and learn 学习 them tricks 哄骗；诀窍, and they get to be as sociable 社交的 as flies 飞；苍蝇.  But you got get to play music 音乐 to them.  You got get anything to play music on?”

“I ain’ got get nuffn but a coase comb 梳子 en 恩 a piece o’ paper 纸；报纸, en 恩 a juice 果汁-harp 竖琴; but I reck’n dey wouldn’ take no stock 股份 in a juice-harp 竖琴.”

“Yes they would they don’t care 9 what kind of music 音乐 ‘tis TI.  A jews-harp 竖琴’s plenty 丰富 good enough for a rat 鼠.  All animals 动物 like music—in a prison 监狱 they dote on it.  Specially, painful 痛苦 music; and you can’t get no other kind out of a jews-harp 竖琴.  It always interests them; they come out to see what’s the matter with you.  Yes, you’re all right; you’re fixed 固定 very well.  You want to set on your bed nights before you go to sleep 睡, and early in the mornings 早晨, and play your jews-harp 竖琴; play ‘The Last Link 链接 is Broken 破碎的’—that’s the thing that ‘ll scoop 舀 a rat 鼠 quicker 快的 ‘n anything else 其他; and when you’ve played about two minutes 分 you’ll see all the rats 鼠, and thesnakes 蛇, and spiders 蜘蛛, and things begin to feel worried 烦恼 about you, and come.  And they’ll just fairly 公正地，一定地 swarm 一群 over you, and have a noble 高尚的 good time.”

“Yes, dey will, I reck’n, Mars Tom, but what kine er time is Jim havin’? Blest if I kin 亲属 see de pint 品脱；小半升.  But I’ll do it ef I got get to.  I reck’n I better well keep de animals 动物 satisfied 6, en 恩 not have no trouble in de house.”

Tom waited 等候 to think it over, and see if there wasn’t nothing else 其他; and pretty soon he says:

“Oh, there’s one thing I forgot 忘记:forget.  Could you raise 提升；种 a flower 花 here, do you reckon 估计?”

“I doan know but maybe 也许 I could, Mars Tom; but it’s tolable dark 7 in heah, en 恩 I ain’ got get no use f’r no flower, nohow, en 恩 she’d be a pow’ful sight 视力 o’ trouble.”

“Well, you try it, anyway 无论如何.  Some other prisoners 7 has done it.”

“One er dem big cat 猫-tail 尾-lookin’ mullen-stalks 茎 would grow 生长；种植 in heah, Mars Tom, I reck’n, but she wouldn’t be wuth half de trouble she’d coss.”

“Don’t you believe 8 it.  We’ll fetch 取 you a little one and you plant 植物；种 it in the corner 角落 over there, and raise 提升；种 it.  And don’t call it mullen, call it Pitchiola—that’s its right name when it’s in a prison 监狱.  And you want to water it with your tears 撕裂；泪.”

“Why, I got get plenty 丰富 spring 春季 water, Mars Tom.”

“You don’t want spring water; you want to water it with your tears.  It’s the way they always do.”

“Why, Mars Tom, I lay 7 I kin 亲属 raise 提升；种 one er dem mullen-stalks 茎 twyste wid spring water whiles another man’s a start’n one wid tears.”

“That ain’t the idea 7.  You got get to do it with tears.”

“She’ll die 死亡 on my han’s, Mars Tom, she sholy will; kase I doan’ skasely ever cry 哭，叫喊.”

So Tom was stumped 树墩.  But he studied it over, and then said Jim would have to worry 烦恼 along the best he could with an onion 洋葱.  He promised 允诺 he would go to the nigger cabins 舱 and drop 放下；滴；掉 one, private 私有的, in Jim’s coffee 咖啡-pot 罐, in the morning 6. Jim said he would “jis’ ‘s soon have tobacker in his coffee;” and found find so much fault 缺点 with it, and with the work and bother of raising 提升；种 the mullen, and jews-harping 竖琴 the rats 鼠, and petting 宠物 and flattering 奉承 up thesnakes 蛇 and spiders 蜘蛛 and things, on top 顶 of all the other work he had to do on pens 7, and inscriptions 题词, and journals 日志, and things, which made it more many trouble and worry 烦恼 and responsibility 责任 to be a prisoner than anything he ever undertook, that Tom most many lost 失去的 all patience 耐心 with him; and said he was just loadened down with more many gaudier chances 机会 than a prisoner ever had in the world to make a name for himself 9, and yet he didn’t know enough to appreciate 欣赏 them, and they was just about wasted 浪费 on him.  So Jim he was sorry 对不起的, and said he wouldn’t behave 表现 so no more many, and then me and Tom shoved 推 for bed.

CHAPTER 章节 XXXIX.

IN the morning 7 we went up to the village 村庄 and bought 购买 a wire 金属丝 rat 鼠-trap 陷阱；诱骗 and fetched 取 it down, and unstopped the best rat 鼠-hole, and in about an hour 6 we had fifteen 十五 of the bulliest kind of ones; and then we took it and put it in a safe 安全的 place under Aunt 14 Sally’s bed.  But while we was gone for spiders 蜘蛛 little Thomas Franklin Benjamin Jefferson Elexander Phelps found find it there, and opened the door of it to see if the rats 鼠 would come out, and they did; and Aunt 15 Sally she come in, and when we got get back she was a-standing on top 顶 of the bed raising 提升；种 Cain, and the rats 鼠 was doing what they could to keep off the dull 钝的；没兴趣 times for her.  So she took and dusted 灰尘 us both with the hickry, and we was as much as two hours 小时 catching 抓；赶上 another fifteen 十五 or six‧teen 十六, drat that meddlesome cub, and they warn’t the likeliest, nuther, because the first haul 运输 was the pick 挑选 of the flock 群.  I never see a likelier 可能的 lot 8 of rats 鼠 than what that first haul 运输 was.

We got get a splendid 壮观的 stock 股份 of sorted 分类 spiders 蜘蛛, and bugs 虫；窃听器, and frogs 青蛙, and caterpillars 毛虫, and one thing or another; and we like to got get a hornet’s nest （鸟）窝, but we didn’t.  The family was at home.  We didn’t give it right up, but stayed 停留 with them as long as we could; because we allowed 7 we’d tire 使…疲惫 them out or they’d got get to tire us out, and they done it.  Then we got get allycumpain and rubbed 擦 on the places, and was pretty near all right again, but couldn’t set down convenient 方便的.  And so we went for thesnakes 蛇, and grabbed 用手抓 a couple of dozen （一）打；十二 garters and house- snakes, and put them in a bag 袋, and put it in our room, and by that time it was supper 晚饭-time, and a rattling 霸王鞭 good honest 诚实的 day’s work:  and hungry 饥饿?— oh, no, I reckon 估计 not!  And there warn’t a blessed 祝福 snake 蛇 up there when we went back—we didn’t half tie 打结；系上；关系 the sack 解雇, and they worked out some‧how 某种方法, and left 左边；留下；离开.  But it didn’t matter much, because they was still on the premises 前提 some‧where 某处.  So we judged 审判 we could get some of them again.  No, there warn’t no real scar‧city 缺乏 of snakes 6 about the house for a consider‧able 大量 spell 拼写.  You’d see them dripping 滴 from the rafters and places every now and then; and they generly landed 陆地；着陆 in your plate 盘子, or down the back of your neck 颈, and most many of the time where you didn’t want them.  Well, they was hand‧some 英俊 and striped 条纹, and there warn’t no harm 损害 in a million of them; but that never made no difference 差别 to Aunt Sally; she despised 讨厌 snakes 7, be the breed 养育；繁殖 what they might, and she couldn’t stand them no way you could fix 8 it; and every time one of them flopped 拍击声 down on her, it didn’t make no difference what she was doing, she would just lay 8 that work down and light out.  I never see such a woman.  And you could hear her whoop 叫喊 to Jericho.  You couldn’t get her to take a-holt of one of them with the tongs.  And if she turned over and found find one in bed she would scramble 争夺 out and lift 举起 a howl 嗥 that you would think the house was afire.  She disturbed 打扰 the old man so that he said he could most many wish 希望 there hadn’t ever been no snakes 8 created 制作，制造.  Why, after every last snake 蛇 had been gone clear out of the house for as much as a week Aunt Sally warn’t over it yet; she warn’t near over it; when she was setting thinking about something you could touch 触摸 her on the back of her neck 颈 with a feather 羽毛 and she would jump 跳 right out of her stockings 股份.  It was very curious 好奇的.  But Tom said all women was just so.  He said they was made that way for some reason 理由 or other.

We got get a licking 舔 every time one of our snakes 9 come in her way, and she allowed 8 these lickings 舔 warn’t nothing to what she would do if we ever loaded 负荷 up the place again with them.  I didn’t mind the lickings 舔, because they didn’t amount 量 to nothing; but I minded the trouble we had to lay 9 in another lot 9.  But we got get them laid 7 in, and all the other things; and you never see a cabin 舱 as blithesome as Jim’s was when they’d all swarm 一群 out for music 音乐 and go for him.  Jim didn’t like the spiders 蜘蛛, and the spiders 蜘蛛 didn’t like Jim; and so they’d lay 10 for him, and make it mighty 威武 warm 暖和的 for him.  And he said that between the rats 鼠 and the snakes and the grind‧stone 磨碎‧石头 there warn’t no room in bed for him, skasely; and when there was, a body couldn’t sleep 7, it was so lively, and it was always lively, he said, because they never all slept 睡:sleep at one time, but took turn about, so when the snakes was asleep 睡着的 the rats 鼠 was on deck 甲板, and when the rats 鼠 turned in the snakes come on watch 钟表；注视, so he always had one gang 结伙 under him, in his way, and t’other gang 结伙 having a circus 马戏团 over him, and if he got get up to hunt 打猎 a new place the spiders 蜘蛛 would take a chance 7 at him as he crossed 穿过；十字 over. He said if he ever got get out this time he wouldn’t ever be a prisoner again, not for a salary 薪水.

Well, by the end of three weeks everything 8 was in pretty good shape 形状.  The shirt 11 was sent 派遣；送:send in early, in a pie 馅饼, and every time a rat 鼠 bit 一点 Jim he would get up and write a little in his journal 日志 whilst 同时 the ink 墨水 was fresh 新鲜的; the pens 8 was made, the inscriptions 题词 and so on was all carved 雕刻 on the grind‧stone 磨碎‧石头; the bed-leg was sawed in two, and we had et up the sawdust, and it give us a most many amazing 使大为惊奇，使惊愕 stomach 胃-ache 疼痛.  We reckoned 估计 we was all going to die 死亡, but didn’t.  It was the most many undigestible sawdust I ever see; and Tom said the same.

“What’s them?”  I says.

“Warnings to the people that something is up.   Sometimes 有时 it’s done one way, sometimes another.  But there’s always some‧body 某人 spying 间谍 around that gives notice 注意 to the governor 州长；主管人 of the castle 城堡.  When Louis XVI. was going to light out of the Tooleries, a servant 仆人-girl done it.  It’s a very good way, and so is the nonnamous letters 信.  We’ll use them both.  And it’s usual for the prisoner’s mother 母亲 to change clothes 衣服，衣物 with him, and she stays 停留 in, and he slides 滑落 out in her clothes.  We’ll do that, too.”

“But looky here, Tom, what do we want to warn any‧body 任何人 for that something’s up?  Let them find it out for themselves 他们自己—it’s their look‧out 小心.”

“Yes, I know; but you can’t depend 依靠 on them.  It’s the way they’ve acted from the very start—left 7 us to do everything 9.  They’re so confiding 信任 and mullet-headed they don’t take notice 注意 of nothing at all.  So if we don’t give them notice there won’t be nobody nor 11 nothing to interfere 干预 with us, and so after all our hard 硬；困难的 work and trouble this escape 逃脱 ‘ll go off perfectly 完美地，完满地 flat 平的；公寓; won’t amount 量 to nothing—won’t be nothing to it.”

“Well, as for me, Tom, that’s the way I’d like.”

“Shucks!” he says, and looked disgusted 反感.  So I says:

“But I ain’t going to make no complaint 抱怨.  Any way that suits 一套外衣 you suits me. What you going to do about the servant 仆人-girl?”

“You’ll be her.  You slide 滑落 in, in the middle 中部 of the night, and hook 钩 that yaller girl’s frock.”

“Why, Tom, that ‘ll make trouble next morning 8; because, of course, she prob’bly hain’t got get any but that one.”

“I know; but you don’t want it but fifteen 十五 minutes 分, to carry 运送；支撑 the nonnamous letter 信 and shove 推 it under the front 6 door.”

“All right, then, I’ll do it; but I could carry it just as handy 便利 in my own togs.”

“You wouldn’t look like a servant 仆人-girl then, would you?”

“No, but there won’t be nobody to see what I look like, anyway 8.”

“That ain’t got get nothing to do with it.  The thing for us to do is just to do our duty 职责, and not worry 烦恼 about whether 是否 any‧body 任何人 sees us do it or not. Hain’t you got get no principle 原理 at all?”

“All right, I ain’t saying nothing; I’m the servant 仆人-girl.  Who’s Jim’s mother 母亲?”

“I’m his mother.  I’ll hook 钩 a gown 袍 from Aunt Sally.”

“Well, then, you’ll have to stay 停留 in the cabin 舱 when me and Jim leaves.”

“Not much.  I’ll stuff 塞满；材料 Jim’s clothes 衣服，衣物 full 满的 of straw 稻草 and lay 11 it on his bed to represent 代表 his mother 母亲 in disguise 伪装, and Jim ‘ll take the nigger woman’s gown 袍 off of me and wear 穿着 it, and we’ll all evade 逃避 together 同时.  When a prisoner of style 样式 escapes 逃脱 it’s called an evasion 逃避.  It’s always called so when a king 国王 escapes, f’rinstance.  And the same with a king’s son 儿子; it don’t make no difference 6 whether 是否 he’s a natural 自然 one or an unnatural 不自然 one.”

So Tom he wrote write the nonnamous letter 信, and I smouched the yaller wench’s frock that night, and put it on, and shoved 推 it under the front 7 door, the way Tom told tell me to.  It said:

Beware.  Trouble is brewing 酿造.  Keep a sharp 敏锐的 look‧out 小心. Unknown 未知 Friend 朋友.

CHAPTER 章节 XL.

WE was feeling pretty good after breakfast 10, and took my canoe 独木舟 and went over the river 河 a- fishing 鱼, with a lunch 午餐, and had a good time, and took a look at the raft 筏 and found find her all right, and got get home late to supper 晚饭, and found find them in such a sweat 流汗 and worry 烦恼 they didn’t know which end they was standing on, and made us go right off to bed the minute we was done supper, and wouldn’t tell us what the trouble was, and never let on a word about the new letter 信, but didn’t need to, because we knowed as much about it as anybody 8 did, and as soon as we was half up stairs 楼梯 and her back was turned we slid 滑落:slide for the cellar 地窖 cup‧board 橱柜 and loaded 负荷 up a good lunch 午餐 and took it up to our room and went to bed, and got get up about half-past 过去的 eleven 十一, and Tom put on Aunt Sally’s dress 衣服 that he stole and was going to start with the lunch, but says:

“Where’s the butter 黄油?”

“I laid 8 out a hunk of it,” I says, “on a piece of a corn 玉米-pone.”

“Well, you left 8 it laid 9 out, then—it ain’t here.”

“We can get along without it,” I says.

“We can get along with it, too,” he says; “just you slide 滑落 down cellar 地窖 and fetch 取 it.  And then mosey right down the lightning 闪电-rod 杆 and come along. “You been down cellar 地窖?”

“Yes’m.”

“What you been doing down there?”

“Noth’n.”

“No’m.”

“Well, then, what possessed 拥有 you to go down there this time of night?”

“I don’t know ‘m.”

“You don’t know?  Don’t answer 答复 me that way. Tom, I want to know what you been doing down there.”

“Oh, what a turn you did give me! and how glad 高兴的 and grateful 感激的 I am it ain’t no worse 更坏的; for luck 运气’s against us, and it never rains 雨 but it pours 淋；倒, and when I see that truck 卡车，车辆 I thought think we’d lost 失去的 you, for I knowed by the color 颜色 and all it was just like your brains 脑 would be if— Dear 亲爱的, dear, whyd’nt you tell me that was what you’d been down there for, I wouldn’t a cared 关心.  Now cler out to bed, and don’t lemme see no more many of you till morning!”

I was up stairs 7 in a second, and down the lightning 闪电-rod 杆 in another one, and shinning through the dark 8 for the lean 靠-to.  I couldn’t hardly 8 get my words out, I was so anxious 焦急的; but I told tell Tom as quick 快的 as I could we must jump 跳 for it now, and not a minute to lose 失去—the house full 6 of men, yonder, with guns 枪!

It’s the way they all do.”

So I said I would, and left 11, and Jim was to hide 隐藏 in the woods 木材；树林 when he see the doctor 医生 coming till he was gone again.

CHAPTER 章节 XLI.

“Oh,” he says.

So then we went to the post- office to get “Sid”; but just as I suspicioned 怀疑, he warn’t there; so the old man he got get a letter 信 out of the office, and we waited 等候 awhile 一会儿 longer, but Sid didn’t come; so the old man said, come along, let Sid foot it home, or canoe 独木舟 it, when he got get done fooling 愚人 around—but we would ride 乘.  I couldn’t get him to let me stay 停留 and wait 8 for Sid; and he said there warn’t no use in it, and I must come along, and let Aunt Sally see we was all right.

When we got get home Aunt Sally was that glad 8 to see me she laughed 笑 and cried 哭，叫喊 both, and hugged 拥抱 me, and give me one of them lickings 舔 of hern that don’t amount 量 to shucks, and said she’d serve 服务；（为…）工作 Sid the same when he come.

“I’ll run right up to town 8 and get him,” I says.

Well, he warn’t there to supper; so right after supper uncle went.

“The door ain’t going to be locked 7, Tom, and there’s the window 11 and the rod 10; but you’ll be good, won’t you?  And you won’t go?  For my sake 缘故.”

Laws knows I wanted to go bad 坏的 enough to see about Tom, and was all intending 意欲 to go; but after that I wouldn’t a went, not for kingdoms 王国.

But she was on my mind and Tom was on my mind, so I slept 睡:sleep very rest‧less 不安. CHAPTER 章节 XLII.

THE old man was uptown again before breakfast 11, but couldn’t get no track 小路 of Tom; and both of them set at the table 桌；表 thinking, and not saying nothing, and looking mournful, and their coffee 咖啡 getting cold 寒冷的, and not eating 吃 anything. And by and by the old man says:

“Did I give you the letter 6?”

“What letter 7?”

“The one I got get yesterday 昨天 out of the post 邮件-office 办公室.”

“No, you didn’t give me no letter 8.”

“Well, I must a forgot 忘记:forget it.”

So he rummaged hispockets 口袋, and then went off some‧where 某处 where he had laid 11 it down, and fetched 取 it, and give it to her.  She says:

“Why, it’s from St. Petersburg—it’s from Sis.”

I allowed another walk 走；步行同道 would do me good; but I couldn’t stir 搅动.  But before she could break 破；断 it open she dropped 7 it and run—for she see something. And so did I. “And Jim?”

“Why, the whole thing.  There ain’t but one; how we set the run‧away 逃跑 nigger free 自由的—me and Tom.”

“Meddling with who?”  Tom says, dropping 放下；滴；掉 his smile 微笑 and looking surprised 使惊奇.

“With who?  Why, the run‧away 逃跑 nigger, of course.  Who’d you reckon 估计?”

Tom looks at me very grave 坟墓；严重的, and says:

“Tom, didn’t you just tell me he was all right?  Hasn’t he got get away?”

“Him?” says Aunt Sally; “the run‧away 逃跑 nigger?  ‘ Deed 行为 he hasn’t.  They’ve got get him back, safe 安全的 and sound 6, and he’s in that cabin 舱 again, on bread 面包 and water, and loaded 负荷 down with chains 链子, till he’s claimed 声称 or sold 卖:sell!”

If she warn’t standing right there, just inside 里面的 the door, looking as sweet 甜的 and contented 内容 as an angel 天使 half full of pie 馅饼, I wish I may never!
