DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE

Alice had sat 坐:sit on the bank 银行；岸 by her sister 姐妹 till 到 she was tired 使…疲惫. Once or twice 两次 she had looked at the book 书 her sister held hold in her hand, but there were no pictures 照片 in it. "What is the use of a book," thought think Alice, "without pictures?" She asked her-self 自己 as well as she could, because the hot 热的 day made her feel quite 相当 sleepy 困, if it would be worth 值得的 while to get up and pick 挑选 some flowers 花 to make a chain 链子. Just then a white 白色的 rabbit 兔子 with pink 粉红色的 eyes ran run close by her.

That was not such a strange 奇怪；陌生 thing, nor 也不 did Alice think it so much out of the way to hear the Rabbit say, "Oh dear 亲爱的! Oh, dear! I shall 将要 be late!" But when the Rabbit took a watch 钟表；注视 out of its pocket 口袋, and looked at it and then ran run on, Alice started to her feet, for she knew know that was the first time she had seen see a Rabbit with a watch. She jumped 跳 up and ran run to get a look at it, and was just in time to see it went down a large rabbit hole 洞 near the bushes 灌木.

As fast 快的 as she could go, Alice went down the hole after it, and did not once stop 停止 to think how in the world she was to get out.

The hole went straight 直的 on for some way and then turned down with a sharp 敏锐的 bend 弯曲, so sharp that Alice had no time to think to stop 停止 till 到 she found find her-self 自己 falling 落下 in what seemed a deep 深的 well.

She must not have moved fast 快的, or the well must have been quite 相当 deep, for it took her a long time to go down, and as she went she had time to look at the strange 奇怪；陌生 things she passed 走过. First she tried to look down and make out what was there, but it was too dark 黑暗的 to see; then she looked at the sides of the well and saw see that they were piled 堆 with bookshelves; here and there she saw see maps 地图 hung 悬挂:hang on pins 钉. She took down a jar 罐 from one of the shelves as she passed 走过. On it was the word Jam, but there was no jam 果酱 in it, so she put it back on one of the shelves as she fell 落下:fall past 过去的 it.

"Well," thought think Alice to her-self 自己, "after such a fall 落下 as this, I shall 将要 not mind a fall down stairs 楼梯 at all. How brave 勇敢的 they'll all think me at home! Why, I wouldn't say a thing if I fell 落下:fall off the top 顶 of the house." (Which I dare 敢 say was quite 相当 true 真正的.)

Down, down, down. Would the fall 落下 never come to an end? "I should like to know," she said, "how far I have come by this time. Wouldn't it be strange 奇怪；陌生 if I should fall right through the earth 地球 and come out where the people walk 走；步行同道 with their feet up and their heads down?"

Down, down, down. "Dinah will miss 错过；想念 me tonight 今晚," Alice went on. (Dinah was the cat 猫.) "I hope 希望 they'll think to give her her milk 奶 at tea‧time 茶水‧时间. Dinah, my dear 亲爱的! I wish 希望 you were down here with me! There are no mice in the air 天空, but you might catch 抓；赶上 a bat 蝙蝠, and that's much like a mouse 老鼠, you know. But do cats 猫 eat 吃 bats 蝙蝠?" And here Alice must have gone to sleep 睡, for she dreamed 梦想:dream that she walked 走；步行同道 hand in hand with Dinah, and just as she asked her, "Now, Dinah, tell me the truth 真理, do you eat bats 蝙蝠?" all at once, thump 扑通! thump 扑通! down she came on a heap 堆 of sticks 棍；粘贴 and dry 干燥 leaves, and the long fall 落下 was over.

Alice was not a bit 一点 hurt 损害, but at once jumped 跳 to her feet. She looked up, but all was dark 黑暗的 there. At the end of a long hall 过道 in front 前面 of her the white 白色的 rabbit 兔子 was still in sight 视力. There was no time to be lost 失去的, so off Alice went like the wind 风, and was just in time to hear it say, "Oh, my ears 耳朵, how late it is!" then it was out of sight. She found find she was in a long hall 过道 with a low 低的 roof 屋顶, from which hung 悬挂:hang a row 行 of lighted light lamps 灯.

There were doors 门 on all sides, but when Alice had been all round 圆形的；围绕 and tried each one, she found find they were all locked 锁. She walked 走；步行同道 back and forth 向前 and tried to think how she was to get out. At last she came to a stand made all of glass 玻璃. On it was a very small key 钥匙 of gold 金, and Alice's first thought think was that this might be a key to one of the doors 门 of the hall 过道, but when she had tried the key in each lock 锁, she found find the locks 锁 were too large or the key was too small—it did not fit 合适 one of them. But when she went round 圆形的；围绕 the hall 过道 once more many she came to a low 低的 curtain 窗帘 which she had not seen see at first, and when she drew 绘画:draw this back she found find a small door 门, not much more many than a foot 脚；英尺 high; she tried the key 钥匙 in the lock 锁, and to her great joy 喜悦 it fitted 合适!

Alice found find that the door 门 led lead to a hall 过道 the size 大小 of a rat 鼠 ( mouse 老鼠) hole 洞; she knelt 跪:kneel down and looked through it into a garden 菜园；花园 of gay 快乐的 flowers 花. How she longed to get out of that dark 黑暗的 hall 过道 and near those bright 明亮的 blooms 盛开; but she could not so much as get her head through the door 门; "and if my head would go through," thought think Alice, "it would be of no use, for the rest 休息，其余 of me would still be too large to go through. Oh, how I wish 希望 I could shut 关闭 up small! I think I could if I knew know how to start."

There seemed to be no use to wait 等候 by the small door, so she went back to the stand with the hope 希望 that she might find a key 钥匙 to one of the large doors 门, or maybe 也许 a book 书 of rules 规则 that would teach 教 her to grow 生长；种植 small. This time she found find a small bottle 瓶子 on it ("which I am sure 确信的 was not here just now," said Alice), and tied 打结；系上；关系 round 圆形的；围绕 the neck 颈 of the bottle was a tag 标签 (a piece 块 of paper 纸；报纸) with the words " Drink 喝（酒） me" printed 印刷 on it.

It was all right to say " Drink me," but Alice was too wise 明智的；聪明的 to do that in haste 匆忙: "No, I'll look first," she said, "and see if it's marked 斑点；标注 ' poison 毒药' or not," for she had been taught 教:teach if you drink 喝（酒） much from a bottle 瓶子 marked ' poison,' it is sure 确信的 to make you sick 病；恶心. This had no such mark 斑点；标注 on it, so she dared 敢 to taste 品尝 it, and as she found find it nice 美好的, she soon 立刻 drank 喝（酒）:drink it off.

"How strange 奇怪；陌生 I feel," said Alice. "I am sure 确信的 I am not so large as I was!"

And so it was; she was now not quite 相当 a foot 脚；英尺 high, and her face lighted light up at the thought think that she was now the right size 大小 to go through the small door 门 and get out to that lovely 可爱的 garden 菜园；花园.

Poor 贫穷的 Alice! When she reached 到达 the door she found find that she had left 左边；留下；离开 the key 钥匙 on the stand, and when she went back for it, she found find she could by no means reach 到达 it. "Come, there's no use to cry 哭，叫喊 like that!" Alice said to her-self 自己 as strict 严格的 as she could speak 讲. "I tell you to leave off at once!"

Soon 立刻 her eyes fell 落下:fall on a small glass 玻璃 box 盒；耳光 that lay 放置 on the floor 地面. She looked in it and found find a very small cake 蛋糕 on which were the words " Eat 吃 me," marked 斑点；标注 in grapes 葡萄. "Well, I'll eat it," said Alice, "and if it makes me grow 生长；种植 tall 身高；高的, I can reach 到达 the key 钥匙, and if it makes me shrink (become smaller) up, I can creep 爬行 under the door 6; so I'll get out some way."

So she set to work and soon 立刻 ate 吃:eat all the cake 蛋糕.

THE POOL OF TEARS

"How strange 奇怪；陌生! Oh my!" said Alice, "how tall 身高；高的 I am, and all at once, too! Goodby, feet." (For when she looked down at her feet they seemed so far off, she thought think they would soon be out of sight 视力.) "Oh, my poor 贫穷的 feet, who will put on your shoes 鞋 for you now, dears 亲爱的? I'm sure 确信的 I shall 将要 not do it. I shall be a great deal 很多；对付 too far off to take care 关心 of you; you must get on the best 最好 way you can; but I must be kind to them," thought think Alice, "or they won 赢:win't walk 走；步行同道 the way I want to go! Let me see: I'll give them a pair 一副 of new shoes 鞋 each, Christmas 圣诞节."

She stopped 停止 to think how she would send 派遣；送 them. "They must go by the mail 邮件," she thought think; "and how funny 有趣的 it'll seem to send shoes 鞋 to one's own feet. How odd 奇 the address 地址 will look!

Just then her head struck 敲击:strike the roof 屋顶 of the hall 过道; in fact she was now more many than nine 九 feet high, and she at once took up the small key 8 and went back to the door 7.

Poor 贫穷的 Alice! It was as much as she could do, when she lay 放置 down on one side, to look through to the garden 菜园；花园 with one eye: but to get through was not to be hoped 希望 for, so she sat 坐:sit down and had a good cry 哭，叫喊.

" Shame 羞愧 on you," said Alice, "a great big girl like you" (she might well say this) "to cry in this way! Stop 停止 at once, I tell you!" But she went on all the same, and shed tears 撕裂；泪 till 到 there was a large pool 水池 all round 圆形的；围绕 her, and which reached 到达 half 一半的 way down the hall 7.

At last she heard hear the sound 声音 of feet not far off, then she dried 干燥 her eyes in great haste 匆忙 to see who it was. It was the White 白色的 Rabbit 兔子 that had come back, dressed 衣服 in fine 好的 clothes 衣服，衣物, with a pair 一副 of white 白色的 kid 孩子 gloves 手套 in one hand, and a large fan 扇子 in the other. He trotted 小跑 on in great haste 匆忙, and talked 说话 to him-self 自己 as he came, "Oh! the Duchess, the Duchess! Oh! won 赢:win't she be in a fine 好的 rage 愤怒 if I've made her wait 等候?"

Alice felt feel so bad 坏的 and so in need of help from some one, that when the Rabbit 兔子 came near, she said in a low 低的 timid 胆小 voice 嗓音, "If you please 请;讨人喜欢, sir 先生—" The Rabbit started as if shot 射击；拍摄:shoot, dropped 放下；滴；掉 the white 白色的 kid 孩子 gloves 手套 and the fan 扇子 and ran run off into the dark 黑暗的 as fast 快的 as his two hind feet could take him.

Alice took up the fan and gloves 手套 and as the hall 8 was quite 相当 hot 热的, she fanned 扇子 her-self 自己 all the time she went on talking 说话. " Dear 亲爱的, dear! How strange 奇怪；陌生 all things are today 今天! Could I have been changed in the night? Let me think: was I the same when I got get up today? Seems to me I didn't feel quite 6 the same. But if I'm not the same, then who in the world am I?" Then she thought think of all the girls she knew know that were of her age 年龄, to see if she could have been changed for one of them.

"I'm sure 确信的 I'm not Ada," she said, "for her hair 头发 is in such long curls 一绺鬈发 and mine 我的 doesn't curl 一绺鬈发 at all; and I'm sure I can't be Mabel, for I know all sorts 分类 of things, and she, oh! she knows such a little! Then, she's she, and I'm I, and— oh dear 亲爱的, how strange 奇怪；陌生 it all is! I'll try if I know all the things I used to know. Let me see: four times five is twelve 十二, and four times six 6 is thirteen 十三, and four times seven 七 is— oh dear! that is not right. I must have been changed for Mabel! I'll try if I know 'How doth the little—'" and she placed her hands on her lap 膝部, as if she were at school and tried to say it, but her voice 嗓音 was hoarse and strange 7 and the words did not come the same as they used to do.

"I'm sure 6 those are not the right words," said poor 贫穷的 Alice, and her eyes filled 装满 with tears 撕裂；泪 as she went on, "I must be Mabel after all, and I shall 将要 have to go and live in that poky house and have next to no toys 玩具 to play with, and oh! such hard 硬；困难的 things to learn 学习. No, I've made up my mind; if I'm Mabel, I'll stay 停留 down here! It'll be no use for them to put their heads down and say, 'Come up, dear 8!' I shall 将要 look up and say, 'Who am I, then? Tell me that first, and then if I like it, I'll come up; if not, I'll stay down here till 到 I'm some one else 其他'—but, oh dear 9," cried 哭，叫喊 Alice with a fresh 新鲜的 burst 爆裂 of tears 撕裂；泪, "I do wish 希望 they would put their heads down! I am so tired 使…疲惫 of this place!"

As she said this she looked down at her hands and saw see that she had put on one of the Rabbit 9's white 白色的 kid 孩子 gloves 手套 while she was talking 说话. "How can I have done that?" she thought think. "I must have grown 生长；种植:grow small once more many." She got get up and went to the glass 玻璃 stand to test 试验 her height 高度 by that, and found find that as well as she could guess 推测 she was now not more many than two feet high, and still shrinking 收缩 quite 7 fast 快的. "Now for the garden 菜园；花园," and she ran run with all her speed 速度 back to the small door 8; but, oh dear 10! the door 9 was shut 关闭, and the key 9 lay 放置 on the glass 玻璃 stand, "and things are worse 更坏的 than ever 永远；曾经," thought think the poor 贫穷的 child, "for I never was so small as this, never! It's too bad 坏的, that it is!"

As she said these words her foot 脚；英尺 slipped 滑, and splash 溅! she was up to her chin 下巴 in salt 盐 water. At first she thought think she must be in the sea 海, but she soon 立刻 made out that she was in the pool 水池 of tears 撕裂；泪 which she had wept weep when she was nine 九 feet high.

"I wish 希望 I hadn't cried 哭，叫喊 so much!" said Alice as she swam 游泳:swim round 圆形的；围绕 and tried to find her way out. "I shall 6 now be drowned 淹死 in my own tears 撕裂；泪. That will be a strange 8 thing, to be sure 7! But all things are strange 9 today 今天."

Just then she heard hear a splash 溅 in the pool 水池 a little way off, and she swam 游泳:swim near to make out what it was; at first she thought think it must be a whale 鲸, but when she thought think how small she was now, she soon 立刻 made out that it was a mouse 老鼠 that had slipped 滑 in the pond 池塘.

"Would it be of any use now to speak 讲 to this mouse? All things are so outofway down here, I should think maybe 也许 it can talk 说话, at least 最小的 there's no harm 损害 to try." So she said: "O Mouse, do you know the way out of this pool 水池? I have swum 游泳:swim here till 到 I'm quite 8 tired 使…疲惫, O Mouse!" The Mouse looked at her and seemed to her to wink 眨眼 with one of its small eyes, but it did not speak 讲.

"It may be a French Mouse," thought think Alice, so she said: "Où est ma 嘛 chatte?" (Where is my cat 猫?) which was all the French she could think of just then. The Mouse gave give a quick 快的 leap 飞跃 out of the water, and seemed in a great fright 恐怖, "Oh 6, I beg 乞讨 your pardon 宽恕；说啥？," cried 哭，叫喊 Alice. "I quite 9 forgot 忘记:forget you didn't like cats 猫."

"Not like cats!" cried the Mouse 9 in a shrill, harsh 苛刻 voice 嗓音. "Would you like cats if you were me?"

"Well, I guess 推测 not," said Alice, "but please 请;讨人喜欢 don't get mad 疯狂的. And yet I wish 希望 I could show you our cat 猫, Dinah. I'm sure 8 you'd like cats 猫 if you could see her. She is such a dear 11 thing," Alice went on half 一半的 to her-self 自己 as she swam 游泳:swim round 圆形的；围绕 in the pool 水池, "and she sits 坐 and purrs by the fire 火 and licks 舔 her paws 爪子 and washes 洗 her face—and she is such a nice 美好的 soft 软的 thing to nurse 护士—and she's a fine 好的 one to catch 抓；赶上 mice—Oh 7, dear 12!" cried 哭，叫喊 Alice, for this time the Mouse 10 was in a great fright 恐怖 and each hair 头发 stood stand on end. "We won 赢:win't talk 说话 of her if you don't like it."

"We talk!" cried 6 the Mouse 11, who shook 摇晃:shake down to the end of his tail 尾. "As if I would talk of such low 低的, mean things as cats 猫! All rats 鼠 hate 仇恨 them. Don't let me hear the name again!"

"I won 赢:win't," said Alice, in great haste 匆忙 to change the theme 主题. "Are you fond 喜欢的—of—of dogs 狗?" The mouse 12 did not speak 讲, so Alice went on: "There is such a nice 美好的 dog 狗 near our house, I should like to show you! A very small dog, you know, with oh 8! such long curly 卷曲 brown 棕色的 hair 头发! And it'll fetch 取 things when you throw 投掷 them, and it'll sit 坐 up and beg 乞讨 for its meat 肉 and do all sorts 分类 of things—I can't tell you half 一半的 of them. And it kills 杀死… all the rats 鼠, and m—oh 9 dear 13!" cried 7 Alice in a sad 悲哀的 tone 音, "I've made it mad 疯狂的 again!" For the Mouse 13 swam 游泳:swim off from her as fast 快的 as it could go, and made quite a stir 搅动 in the pool 水池 as it went.

So she called it in a soft 软的, kind voice 嗓音, "Mouse 14 dear! Do come back and we won 赢:win't talk 说话 of cats 6 or dogs 狗 if you don't like them!" When the Mouse 15 heard hear this it turned round 圆形的；围绕 and swam 游泳:swim back to her; its face was quite pale 苍白的 (with rage 愤怒, Alice thought think), and it said in a low 低的, weak 柔弱的 voice 嗓音, "Let us get to the shore 岸, and then I'll tell you why it is I hate 仇恨 cats 7 and dogs 狗."

It was high time to go, for the pool 水池 was by this time quite crowded 人群；拥挤 with the birds 鸟 and beasts 野兽 that had slipped 滑 into it. Alice led lead the way and they all swam 游泳:swim to the shore 岸.

A RACE

They were a strange 10 looking crowd 人群；拥挤 as they stood stand or sat 坐:sit on the bank 银行；岸—the wings 翅膀 and tails 尾 of the birds 鸟 drooped to the earth 地球; the fur 毛皮 of the beasts 野兽 clung close to them, and all were as wet 湿的 and cross 穿过；十字 as could be.

The first thought think, of course, was how to get dry 干燥. They had a long talk 说话 about this, and Alice joined 连接 with, them as if she had known know them all her life. But it was hard 硬；困难的 to tell what was best 最好.

"What I want to say," at last spoke 讲:speak up the Dodo, "is that the best thing to get us dry 干燥 would be a race 赛跑."

"What kind of race?" asked Alice, not that she much wanted to know, but the Dodo had paused 暂停 as if it thought think that some one ought 应当 to speak 讲, and no one else 其他 would say a word. "Why," said the Dodo, "the best 最好 way to make it plain 平原；明显 is to do it." (And as you might like to try the thing some cold 寒冷的 day, I'll tell you how the Dodo did it.)

First it marked 斑点；标注 out a race‧course 赛跑‧课程 in a sort 分类 of ring 戒指；打电话 (it didn't care 关心 much for the shape 形状), and then all the crowd 人群；拥挤 were placed on the course, here and there. There was no "One, two, three, and here we go," but they ran run when they liked and left 左边；留下；离开 off when they liked, so that no one could tell when the race 赛跑 was ended. When they had been running half 一半的 an hour 小时 or so and were all quite dry 干燥, the Dodo called out, "The race is over!" and they all crowded 人群；拥挤 round 7 it and and asked, "But who has won 赢:win?"

This the Dodo could not, at first, tell, but sat 坐:sit for a long time with one claw 爪 pressed 压 to its head while the rest 休息，其余 waited 等候, but did not speak 讲. At last the Dodo said, "All have won 赢:win and each must have a prize 奖赏."

"But who is to give them?" all asked at once.

"Why, she of course," said the Dodo, as it pointed to Alice with one long claw 爪; and the whole 全部的 party 社交聚会 at once crowded 人群；拥挤 round 8 her as they called out, "A prize, a prize!"

Alice did not know what to do, but she pulled 拉 from her pocket 口袋 a box 盒；耳光 of little cakes 蛋糕 (by a strange 11, good luck 运气 they did not get wet 湿的 while she was in the pool 7) and handed them round 9 as prizes 奖赏. There was one apiece all round 10.

"But she must have a prize 奖赏, you know," said the Mouse.

"Of course," the Dodo said. "What else 其他 have you got get?" he went on as he turned to Alice.

"A thimble," said Alice looking quite sad 悲哀的.

"Hand it here," said the Dodo.

Then they all crowded 人群；拥挤 round 11 her once more many, while the Dodo handed the thimble back to Alice and said, "We beg 乞讨 that you accept 承认 this fine 好的 thimble;" and when it had made this short 短的 speech 演说 they all cheered 欢呼.

Alice thought think the whole 全部的 thing quite foolish 傻, but they all looked so grave 坟墓；严重的 that she did not dare 敢 to laugh 笑, and as she could not think what to say she bowed 弓 and took the thimble, while she looked as staid as she could.

The next thing was to eat 吃 the cakes 蛋糕: this caused 原因；引起 some noise 噪音, as the large birds 鸟 said they could not taste 品尝 theirs, and the small ones choked 呛 and had to be patted 拍 on the back. It was over at last and they sat 坐:sit down in a ring 戒指；打电话 and begged 乞讨 the Mouse to tell them a tale 故事，不实之词.

"You said you would tell us why you hate 仇恨 cats 8 and dogs 狗," said Alice.

" Mine 我的 is a long and a sad 悲哀的 tale," said the Mouse, as it turned to Alice with a sigh 叹.

"It is a long tail 尾, I'm sure 9," said Alice, looking down at the Mouse's tail; "but why do you call it sad?"

"I shall 7 not tell you," said the Mouse, as it got get up and walked 走；步行同道 off.

" Please 请;讨人喜欢 come back and tell us your tale 故事，不实之词," called Alice; and all joined 连接 in, "Yes, please do!" but the Mouse shook 摇晃:shake its head and walked 走；步行同道 on and was soon 7 out of sight 视力.

"I wish 希望 I had our Dinah here, I know I do!" said Alice. "She'd soon 8 fetch 取 it back."

"And who is Dinah, if I may dare 敢 to ask such a thing?" said one of the birds 鸟.

Alice was glad 高兴的 to talk 6 of her pet 宠物. "Dinah's our cat 猫; and she's such a fine 好的 one to catch 抓；赶上 mice, you can't think. And oh, I wish 希望 you could see her chase 追 a bird 鸟! Why she'll eat 吃 a bird as soon 9 as look at it!"

This speech 演说 caused 原因；引起 a great stir 搅动 in the party 社交聚会. Some of the birds 鸟 rushed 仓促 off at once; one old jay wrapped 包 it-self 自己 up with care 关心 and said, "I must get home; the night air 天空 doesn't suit 一套外衣 my throat 咽喉!" and a wren called out to her brood 窝, "come, my dears 亲爱的! It's high time you were all in bed 床."

Soon 10 they all moved off and Alice was left 左边；留下；离开 alone 单独的.

"I wish 7 I hadn't told tell them of Dinah," she said to her-self 8. "No one seems to like her down here, and I'm sure she's the best 最好 cat 猫 in the world! Oh, my dear Dinah! Shall 8 I ever 永远；曾经 see you any more many?" And here poor 贫穷的 Alice burst 爆裂 into tears 撕裂；泪, for she felt feel very sad 悲哀的 and lonely 孤独的. In a short 短的 time she heard hear the patter 拍 of feet, and she looked up with the hope 希望 that the Mouse had changed its mind and come back to tell his "long and sad tale 故事，不实之词."
